More people should care how they dress for sightseeing.

Gamcheon Culture Village was formed by refugees who were forced to leave their hometowns due to the Korean War, but it is now an art village attracting many tourists with its unique structures and alleyways. Located in Saha-gu, Busan, the village has been transformed through an urban regeneration project into the "Santorini" of Korea. At the time when the project launched, the village, which began as a community of war refugees and believers of Taegeukdo (a native religion of Korea), was going downhill due to the decrease in population. The project turned the village into a space where artists are able to carry out their creative activities, and this change led to an increase in residents and tourists.

Gamcheon Culture Village (Week 2)

Perched on the hills of Busan, Gamcheon Culture Village is a colorful maze of winding alleys and vibrant street art. Amidst this charming labyrinth, a statue of The Little Prince sitting with his loyal fox has become an iconic landmark.

This isn't a random placement. The statue represents the spirit of the village, which was once a humble neighborhood that transformed into a dynamic hub of art and community. As the Little Prince gazes out over the village, he seems to invite visitors to see the world with the same wonder and perspective he had in his own journey. It's a reminder that beauty and hope can bloom even in the most unexpected places.

On our way to the Gamcheon Culture Village in Busan, we spotted a row of brightly coloured houses each with a similar and beautifully ornate front door.

This stairway was named 'Stairs to See Stars' because people used to feel dizzy and see stars in their eyes when they climbed up the stairs carrying heavy loads. It is also called

'148 Stairs due to the number of stairs.

Gamcheon Culture Village (Week 2)

We walked from our hotel, in the Nampo area of Busan, up and down the steepest of hills to get to the Gamecheon Cultural Village... We happened to walk through an area known as the Ami-dong Tombstone Culture Village which was, unlike Gamcheon, virtually devoid of other tourists. In fact we only saw one other couple...

Ami-dong Tombstone Culture Village has a history rooted in the Korean War and the subsequent relocation of residents. Originally a place where refugees settled, the village has evolved into a space where the past and present coexist, with houses built around or incorporating gravestones. It's known for its unique alleyway murals and the sense of history that permeates the area.

The Gamcheon Culture Village has grown to become one of the main tourist attractions in Busan, S-Korea, after artists were employed to renovate the neighbourhood. The district was built in a hillside in the 1920s and 30s, and was settled by refugees after the Korean war in the 1950s. It was a poor neighbourhood, with cramped houses, and was starting to look like a sad relic of the past in modern day well-to-do South Korea. Then authorities got the idea to ask artists to give Gamcheon a total makeover in 2009 - the houses were painted in bright colours and artwork and quirky cafés and shops sprang up. It worked like a charm. Today hoards of tourists snake their way every day through the alleys and stairways of the "Culture Village". The former favela, possibly a candidate for demolition, has become a cool haven of art and espressos and a welcome break from the gleaming skyscrapers and broad motorways of bustling Busan.

Miro-Miro Project in 2010, Jeong Huiuk: "Gamcheon 2(i)-dong was built as a result of the Korean War. Therefore, the messages and signatures by visitors containing the wishes for the national peace and the prosperity of all mankind are attached on the wall inside the house and will be accumulated continuously.

This house is intended to collect the wishes for the peace in this way."
