Orchids and more Orchids. We visited the Gallup and Stribling Orchid farm in Carpenteria near Santa Barbara, California, purported to be the largest in the US.

Jack D. Rittenhouse commented on Gallup in his 1946 guidebook to Route 66. "Gallup is a great Indian trading center, to which they come for supplies and from which Navajo and other Indian wares are shipped. It is also famous for its great Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial held annually just after the middle of August."
The Navajo Reservation borders Gallup to the north and the Zuni Pueblo is to the south.

Leaving Gallup, New Mexico on the Amtrak Southwest Chief. Taking the long, unconventional way home to deliberately get a change of perspective. Sure, airfare is cheap and easy for most of us, but driving (and stopping), a train, and other modes of transportation sure do change one's perspective on the world.
