The first layer of vinyl electrical tape is inside out, so the adhesive side does not contact the wires and make a sticky mess. This layer is covered with another in the traditional way. This allows greater flexibility vs just wrapping the wires and/or using cable ties. Usually, space in the dash is very limited so allowing for greater flex should make the installation less painful.
What makes this nice is the wire colors are standardized. You almost don't even have to know what you're doing. I cut the wires short on the oem connector to reduce the size of the harness. Less is more in this case. I only cut short snips from the aftermarket connector harness to make it easier to transplant the deck into a different vehicle later on.
