A cousin brought this from Canada for us - its a very heavy chunk of stone to travel in a suitcase! But I love it - and thought it was appropriate for SMILE ON SATURDAY : Green Animal

MACRO MONDAYS #Necklace

England, about 1890, as the British rediscovered the St. Johns Island in the Egyptian ocean during the colonial era they mend the famous Peridot stone which was once used in antique times before. So at this time jewelry with this fine greenish stone was in production for a while again.

Jahrhunderts in Produktion waren.

CSX L15126 returns from the Specialty Granules quarry a few miles east with some loaded hoppers in tow. They will pause here to pick up outbound interchange traffic from MMID before returning west to Hagerstown. That old Dodge pickup on the right has probably seen Western Maryland traffic at this spot decades prior.

This is the Greenstone valley in New Zealand that links Queenstown to Fiordland, this spot here could have been the place where a $ 100 million dollar Gondola pathway was to be built. Thankfully it was stopped and hopefully never happens , hey even the sandflies are glad

The Cooney and South Cooney Hills rise above the Wheatland Flats southwest of Wheatland in Platte County, Wyoming. The Wheatland Flats are composed of Pleistocene–Quaternary gravel stream terraces resting on an irregular surface of fine-grained Tertiary sediments.

The hills themselves are built of Archean metamorphic rocks. These include supracrustal greenstones and amphibolites—metamorphosed basaltic lavas—layered with chlorite and hornblende schists, micaceous quartzite, and thin beds of calc-silicate and iron formation. Later granitic intrusions, also Archean in age, were metamorphosed to gneiss. Sheared zones in the complex contain quartz-chlorite veins along with graphite, magnetite, epidote, and minor accessory minerals.

Few times do we get to see a sunset like this. Not knowing what would happen an hour earlier as the storm clouds floated past, I wandered toward the outlet of Greenstone Lake in the Hoover Wilderness of the High Sierra when suddenly everything lit up in a remarkable glow of light. “Shoreline and Reflected Ridge” — A high Sierra Nevada ridge is reflected in the waters of a subalpine wilderness lake.

Id you are a Sierra Nevada backcountry traveler, you probably recognize this a a kind of “classic” Range of Light scene. It was early morning, and I had been photographing since before sunrise. I was walking the shoreline of this subalpine lake, mostly crossing terrain like that on the shoreline in this photograph. As the sun cleared ridges to the east it banked across the high peaks and talus slopes.

When I first started backpacking so many years ago, I think I was overwhelmed by the existence of such places and the idea that I could travel through them. Later on I slowed down and no longer thought of them as a sort of staging for the higher peaks, but rather as important places on their own. Today I’m quite happy to walk slowly through hem with my camera gear, sometimes pausing to just sit and look.

This year the FFF+ Group have decided to have a weekly challenge called “Snap Happy”. A different theme chosen by a member of the group each week, and the image is to be posted on the Monday of the week.

This week the theme, “geometry” was chosen by GG, Greenstone Girl.

When I heard the theme, I was initially at a bit of a loss. Anyone who knows me knows that mathematics is not my strong point. Nevertheless, a challenge is not called a challenge for nothing, and I found that once I tried to look at the world through different “mathematical eyes”, it was much easier than I thought.

Geometry is the part of mathematics that studies the size, shapes, positions and dimensions of things. Squares, circles and triangles are some of the simplest shapes in flat geometry. Cubes, cylinders, cones and spheres are simple shapes in solid geometry. Therefore looking at my full teacup and saucer, I worked out that I had a circle in a circle, in a circle. And my folded napkin was a triangle. And my table had a nice geometric pattern on it. So you see, perhaps geometry can become my cup of tea as an adult, that it wasn’t when I was a teenager!

Hikers can climb to the top platform under the "house" on top.

You'll experience Mount Ojibway more as a rise on the Greenstone Ridge than as a "mountain."

The hike into this gorge is a challenging one, but one that is rewarded with abounding serendipity, surprising contortions in the geology, a colony of rock wallabies, and a diverse set of waterfalls: Two Step Falls, Ochre Falls, Broken Mirror Falls, Bonsai Falls, Broken Femur Falls, Chimney Falls, Blue Dyke Falls and finally Kingaham Falls!

ees and Reflection” — Trees in morning light are reflected in the surface of a subalpine Sierra Nevada lake.

There is a wonderful morning moment in the mountains when the sun finally rises about surrounding high ridges and the first direct light strike trees and meadows and rocks. Not only is the warmth appreciated, but when the light strikes trees from behind it sets them off against the still-shaded mountain slopes.

Of course, you do have to get up early. And I can attest to how difficult it may be to struggle out of a warm sleeping back in the dark, dress in the cold, and head out. But I can also guarantee that the results are almost always worthwhile.
