A Paleokastritsa kolostor meredek sziklái tövében húzódó tengerpart a legenda szerint az a hely, ahol a Poszeidón által felkorbácsolt tenger hullámai kivetették a hazájába igyekvő Odüsszeuszt. A kolostornál a lábunk alatt elterülő tájon lehetett a phaiákok városa és kikötője. Alkinoosz palotája pedig azon a szirttetőn állott volna, ahol most a kolostor épülete sárgállik.
