I couldn't help but wonder how many graves are located in this cemetery which is located behind our house. No disrespect was taken in photographing this scene.

The east section of Aucklands Symonds Street Cemetery Is looking neglected but it is a quiet enclave with good walking trail.

The east side of Symonds Street Cemetery was the Anglican and Weslyan burial grounds.

The early cemetery was segmented into four sections by religious denomination - Anglican, Catholic, Jewish, and Presbyterian with other general religious backgrounds.

In 1905 the Cemetery was closed and given to Auckland City Council as a public park.

It is estimated by Heritage New Zealand that less than a quarter of the around 10,000 graves in the cemetery have grave markers and most of them are in a state of failure.

I came across this in the Plumas National Forrest. I think the photo speaks for itself

There are many superstitions related to graves and graveyards - here are a few:

- It is bad luck to be the first or last person buried in a graveyard

- It is bad luck to walk on a grave

- You must hold your breath while passing a graveyard to prevent drawing in a restless spirit that’s trying to re-enter the physical world.

- Never speak ill of the dead or their spirit will come back to haunt you.

- Don’t whistle inside the cemetery walls, or you will summon the devil.

- It is bad luck to point at a grave, because the dead will see you.

- If you are looking for a little luck, placing some dirt from a cemetery under stairs that you walk over is said to bring good fortune.

Beechey Island, on Lancaster Sound in the far southwest corner of Devon Island, is one of the most important historical locations in the Canadian Arctic. It was the site of first winter camp in 1845 of one of the most infamous Arctic expeditions of all time: Sir John Franklin's ill-fated attempt to sail the Northwest Passage. The graves of three of Franklin's men, Torrington, Hartnell, and Braine, lie here, dead from pneumonia, tuberculosis, and maybe lead poisoning. The 4th grave is Thomas Morgan, who died in 1854 aboard a rescue ship searching for the lost Franklin expedition. The ghost-like shadows to the left are from people lined up to pay tribute at the graves.

A view North along the coast from the Cleveland Way towards the rocky scar of Sailors' Grave and Cromer Point.on the furthest headland is the Old Coast Guard lookout but it is barely visible in this image.

This stretch of seashore is quite difficult to access and I'm afraid to say it is one of the few stretches of beach I have never walked. There are supposed to be dinosaur foot prints embedded in the rocks on the beach,I can't believe I've not been down to see them!!!

Thanks for taking the time to view this and other images in my photo stream.

There's an apocryphal story in the Mon Valley of a young man named Andrew Posey who was entombed in a steel ingot after an open hearth furnace blowout filled the ladle he was working in. Supposedly, the entire heat of steel was dumped on this very spot on the grounds of US Steel's American Steel and Wire works. This memorial was erected and has served as his grave every since.

However, research done by the Mon Valley Progress council in the mid-90s showed that there was no steel below the surface here. Scott Beveridge's story in the Observer-Reporter has more details about this curious Donora tale: scottbeveridge.blogspot.com/2008/08/donora-man-of-steel-g...

The wife and I did not wish to join other family for a Thanksgiving celebration, so in lieu of doing that, we packed the car up and headed literally for the hills. The weather was nice and the scenery fine. Deer, wild turkeys, vultures, hawks and other wildlife were all out.

(Bron: Tracesofwar.nl)

There are a number of very old grave markers inside St Magnus Cathedral.

The Protestant Reformation in 1560 had a less dramatic effect on St Magnus Cathedral than in some other parts of Scotland, but the church had a narrow escape in 1614. Government forces suppressing the rebellion of Robert, the son of Patrick Stewart, 2nd Earl of Orkney, had besieged and destroyed Kirkwall Castle and intended to destroy St. Magnus Cathedral after rebels had hidden inside. The bishop James Law intervened to prevent them from carrying out this plan.

On the headland about 10m above St Peter's church there are two sets of rock-cut tombs or graves. They probably date from the 10th century. Each grave is cut out of the sandstone.

A set of six of these, two straight-sided and four body-shaped all with socket holes at the top where a wooden cross would have been placed. Two more rock-cut graves can be seen close by. The graves are often filled with rain water.

In 1970 a cemetery to the S of this site was excavated and 85 sets of bones were found and dated to the 10th-11th century. The rock cut graves are grade 1 listed and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

This megalithic portal tomb is known as Aideen's Grave. Legend has it that Aideen was the wife of Oscar, son of Oisin, the bravest of all Fianna, who slew three kings in his first battle. Aideen died of grief after Oscar's death at the battle of Gabhra and Oisin built a cairn, which was an honour reserved for kings and great warriors.
