Wars are bot against enemies, but against life

Someone asked: what do you mean with this title?".
My answer:
"When I was 20 it happened on one side that a young man of the same age in Czechoslovakia set himself on fire and died as the only defense against Soviet tanks; on the other hand, thousands of young people of my age were sent to be killed and to kill in Vietnam.
The enemy is always an invention of the aggressor.
War, all wars, are destruction of life, in the interest of few.
At least so it seemed to me when I was young and still today.

I'm Grateful For...
Discovering the joys of photography and my trusty Canon!
I am one week behind 😯
I am grateful for some awesome flickr friends with so much TALENT. This gorgeous hat on Miss A's head was a gift from the incredibly talented Theresa aka SweeTcakes Theresa, but as you can see, she has more talent then just cakes and photograohy . . oh and graphic design too!!!! We got it yesterday in the mail & believe it or not, It is even more gorgeous in person. Thank you so much Theresa, more pics to come soon :)
Over the last several months, Mariah has easily become someone I have come to rely on and lean on the most, and I feel so grateful to know that she feels the same about me. Sometimes I feel like we share so many of the same qualities, so I feel like she really understands me (even when I frustrate the hell out of her).
i am grateful for the time she spends with me, for the trust that she has given to me. I am grateful for her support, and her loyalty, and I hope she never doubts how dear she is to me ♥

This fog occurred yesterday morning. It was the thickest fog I've seen here in 15 years. In fact I've only seen fog 2 or 3 times since moving to Albuquerque. We get very little moisture and when we do we "don't complain" we rejoice. Living in the desert means you don't see rain/snow often so when you get it you're very grateful!!!
I bought this flute in the eighties on a trip to New York City. I've played it in bands, orchestras, flute choirs, kirtans, and now in an improv group. Improvising makes me fearless.
I am grateful for my flute.
I'm grateful to be back in Camden, Maine. I wasn't sure we'd be back after my dad died and my mom sold the house. But here we are with my mom in tow, enjoying this sweet little New England town.
I find it difficult to describe my feelings towards this last week in Oregon at the Flickr Gathering. All week long, the only thing I could think about was how incredible it was that all of this, everything that we've created, started from a simple website. I look back on my life and realize how much my life has been shaped by Flickr. Sounds crazy, doesn't it? But hear me out here: if I hadn't found Flickr, I never would have picked up my camera and experimented. Without Flickr, I never would have decided to study photography at college. I never would have met my first love. And most importantly, I never would have found this incredible network of friends whom I have been blessed to get to know in the past four years. I never would have gained the courage to get on a train and stay with a family in Canada whom I had never met before, or light off fireworks on New Year's Eve with familiar strangers, or explore abandoned houses and climb on rooftops--all for the sake of photography. It's a staggering thing to be a part of. I don't for a moment doubt that there is some greater plan in all of this, something stronger than coincidence that brought us together.
Flickr has truly been so influential to me, as I know it has for many others, and I am so grateful I found the people I have here. As I sit on my soft bed in my air conditioned room on a warm summer's evening, I know I would jump at any opportunity to give up those comforts and go spent a day anywhere in the world with the people I love most.
Thank you, Flickr. Thank you, photography. You have most certainly changed my life, and I am grateful every day.

I have been sick with the flu the last couple of days and I was just hoping to get the picture in focus if I'm being honest! The girls decided to humor me and pose together. And I think Fable may have just passed Rose by a smidge in height. I just love how sweet they are together most of the time!

I'm grateful that I have challenged myself this year in self portraiture. I have learned so much about photography and myself.

This male Belted Kingfisher is not as colorful as its female counterpart but my wife and I were grateful to see this one. In all of our wanderings we have only seen about 3 kingfishers this summer compared to last year when we saw them almost daily.
The two wetland ponds just outside of our town where they hunted in the past must have suffered the loss of minnows and other prey during the drought last year as there are no kingfishers to be spotted perched above the waters waiting for a careless minnow.
Whenever I see a kingfisher it reminds me why I usually wear a baseball cap much to my wife's annoyance. She even makes me take it off in church.
I know I've taken an abundance of flower pictures lately. But seriously, I love all the colors and smells of spring! I passed these on my morning walk and fell in love
I'm grateful for these raucous poppies.
grateful for: things and people that lift others up, the little chats about nothing-much-at-all that make me smile every time, phone conversations with my mom, a husband who is a true partner and friend (and amazing daddy, too), knowing that people care, being willing to say "i love you" without any shyness at all because i know there's no day but today, loving so much my heart sometimes feels overflowing.
Sunset tonight. One of the things I like about my (second-hand) Olympus OMD EM10 II is the accuracy of the colours it captures. Of course it depends on the colours portrayed by one’s display, but on my camera, tablet and TV screen, these are the colours seen by my eyes at the point of capture. How grateful I am to have such gear and sunsets like these to photograph.
I have wanted this shot, or perspective for a long time, but Mother Nature has always had a different plan. I always check the TPE a few days prior to the full moon, and when I saw the potential lineup in conjunction with crystal clear skies, I got really excited!
The only thing holding me back from getting the shot was because Mid Harbor Shoreline Park is closed to the public from sunset to 8 a.m. I had been there before during park hours on scouting missions, but never at 5 a.m. I figured I would just park outside the gate on the street, and walk in.
Upon arriving I soon realized that there was nowhere to park with every square inch of 7th St. and Middle Harbor rd being filled by semi trucks with cargo containers waiting to unload their freight at the Oakland Port.
I stressfully drove around in circles desperate for a place to park my car. I finally found a small space, and parked, but within a minute another sem-trucki without a trailer pulled up and said, "You can't park here! This is for cargo trucks." The clock was ticking, and the moon was descending faster than I wanted. Eventually I said, "Screw it!" and parked illegally in a gutter drain cut-out. I had waited too long for this shot, and decided a parking ticket was worth it.
I grabbed my gear, began walking towards the park, and noticed a security patrol car cruising around with headlights, and a searchlight. "You have got to be kidding me!" I thought. Another quick decision had to be made, and as the security car drove down the road towards the location I wanted to shoot, I walked through the side of the gate, and hid in the bushes. Yep, I hid in the bushes.
The security car just sat exactly where I needed to be as I watched the full moon get lower and lower. Sitting in the bushes, I thought about what I was doing to get this shot, and I wasn't feeling very good about myself. This was something I would have done in high school, but not today as a husband, and father to 3 boys.
By now it was blue hour, and 20 minutes to show time; I told myself, "It's either meant to be, or not", so I stood up from out of the bushes, and walked down the long road straight towards the security car. I heard the car start up, and watched it speed towards me with flashing lights. I stopped walking, and waited for him as his approaching headlights blinded me. He stopped, rolled down his window, and asked, "This park is closed, what are you doing here?" I stood there with all my gear, and said, "I have been waiting many years to shoot the full moon setting over the Transamerica building, and I was wondering if you had it in your heart to let me photograph this rare event during these perfect weather conditions?"
He looked me in the eyes, and then at his watch, and said, "Well it's almost dawn, so just this one time." I almost started crying with joy. After thanking him 15 times, I ran as fast I could to the location. My heart was pounding while trying to get my gear together, and eventually everything fell into place. I took a few deep breaths, and began shooting.
This was by far the most spectacular moon shoot I have ever done. The crystal clear sky with the moon setting over the city was beyond surreal. I was truly grateful for everything coming together like it did considering all the uncertainty that preceded it, and knowing I will probably never have this opportunity again. I did capture the full moon perfectly aligned with the Transamerica building, but preferred showing the moon offset a bit.
This was Friday morning, and not the Blood Moon.
This is a 3 shot panorama at 600mm in the portrait position, then cropped at 8x11.5 trimming off some sky and water.
Thanks for looking!
Such lovely clouds while I was out yesterday; grateful to have captured them and played with the images.

I only got to enjoy the very start of my winter break on the place I'm from (in the photo), with the white-tailed eagles and amazing northern lights, before getting a flu which lasted for the rest of the week.
The weather was stunning the whole week, and it was a pity that I couldn't join my family enjoying it, or do other things I had planned. But it was nice being in their company when they were at home, nursing me, making lots of good food for us, and watching TV together
I am grateful to have been in the company of all of them anyway, since it doesn't happen too often.
And I am grateful that the weather gave all of my friends and colleagues a wonderful winter break, that I got to share through social media ツ

“The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven..” -John Milton
The mind is indeed a powerful place and while I’m not always successful, I try to focus on making light of things and focusing on the good in my life. This time of year, especially dealing with some major health issues, has been especially challenging. However, at the same time things could always be worse and I have so much in my life that I’m grateful for.
Likewise with blooming where you’re planted. I believe this can apply to both your physical location and your situation. This notebook will be a perfect reminder to me of what I should be thankful for.
