95 Days to Zero.
I took this photo on a brilliant June day in 2001, attempting to capture the monumental rectilinear geometry and turn an obstinately square monolith into powerful angles, devoid of ornament. . .
Yet when you approached the towers' base at plaza level you became aware that it wasn't a solid wall of vertical metal ribs. Rather you saw the tall spans of window glass framed by smooth fingers of metal reaching up to heaven. Through the glass appeared the airy multilevel lobby alive with people commuting, gawking, entering or emerging from elevators, buying tickets for the observation deck or half-priced Broadway shows. Tracing the fingers you'd realize that for the bottom two storeys surrounding the lobby, they were spaced twice as far apart as those above, and that at their intersection, the lower verticals curved together into points reminiscent of Gothic arches. . .befitting a cathedral whose worship was commerce.
The construction of architect Minoru Yamasaki's 110-storey creation spanned 1968 through 1973 and dominated lower Manhattan for better or worse over 28 years. I arrived in New York in 1972 and watched it rise. At night gazing south from Washington Square, I'd marvel at its naked ambition two miles away, aware even at that distance of a significant dominance abuilding. The North Tower had reached its full height though remained unoccupied, a dark, sleeping giant. But the South's upper half was still open steel frame and lacy lattice, its thousands of bare-bulb work-lights twinkling like a great rectangular Christmas tree floating over a Manhattan skyline composed of lesser edifices.
It was a proud building, no doubt, with more swagger than beauty. Yet with an inalienable right to exist.
That June 2001, not many more times would I get to walk in its shadow on my way to work, thread through Subway exit turnstiles and careen through the commuters and lower-level retail mall of boutiques, newspaper stands, record stores, bank branches. How many more plaza-level lunchtime dirty water hot dogs, Krispy Kremes, or Borders browse-fest indulgences? Perhaps this weekend we should do brunch at Windows on the World?
Maybe later. There's plenty of time.
Take Nothing For Granted.

I went for a late afternoon prowl today and spotted this beautiful dragonfly down by the dam. It is the first time that I have seen this species.
This is a beautiful graphic of a ballerina dancing in front of a white wall, with a shadow cast behind the female dancer. We produced this image for some of our content and have also decided to release it under Creative Commons Attribution Licensing, meaning you are free to use the image, but please credit www.dancewearcentral.co.uk with ownership of the image in the form of a website link.
Graphic View I
This beautiful looking beast of a camera is a Graphic View Model 1. Introduced in the 1940's, the Graphic View is a highly versatile camera, designed for studio and field work. Its large, red bellows, tilt shift capabilities and interchangeable lens boards and film backs make it one of the most versatile cameras in the world. It can take pretty much any kind of photos, on kind of film, with any lens and shutter.
This camera has been fitted with a Graflok film holder, rather than the standard spring back the camera originally came with. The Graflok back was fitted since it is more versatile, and can be used with any 4x5 film holder or adapter. This means you can use the camera with 4x5 film, Polaroid film, 120 format film, anything you like! All you need is the right back, and you can shoot on just about anything!
This baby is VERY versatile, capable of incredible quality portrait, landscape, tilt shift and macro photography.
The camera itself is in mint condition, serviced by myself. The bellows are supple and light-tight, each nut and bolt has been tightened and the camera has been thoroughly cleaned. Each lens and shutter is in immaculate condition.
The list of parts and accessories in this kit include:
1x Graphic View Body/rails assembly, with Graflok back, ground glass viewer with fresnel screen and pop-out view box
1x Tominon 75mm f4.5 lens in Copal press shutter

Currently reading Alan's War and I think Blankets will be next because I have seen SO many good reviews. I am loving this genre, and wish I had discovered it sooner.
