A collage of memories! My grandparents, a Kansas City skyline, the house I remember and portions of letters they wrote to each other are all included. Still, it doesn’t show the Friday night movies in downtown theaters or the family gatherings for holidays. Not pictured are the trips to the Plaza or birthday parties or stories read to us. Also missing—flying homemade kites with my grandfather and a card game around the table. The memories are all there, just not visible….

Jimmy Carter proclaimed National Grandparents Day in 1978 although it was 1970 Marian McQuade who began a campaign to establish a special day of recognition for grandparents. I remember sending my Nan a greeting card to share with her how important she was to me on Grandparents Day. I think of her often and especially when gardening because I use her hand trowel that’s included in this photo. I thought it apropos to include also some faded flowers because our memories may fade over time but our love stays fresh when we think about the times we spent with those that we love.

Today grandparents were invited to coffee and biscuits at my grandson's school. We were able to chat to other grandparents and listen to the school choir before joining the children in their respective classes. I was glad year 5 were not doing maths as they would have really shown me up. Instead we had to make sure we stayed well clear of paintbrushes and hands as the children were doing hand prints. Sadly we weren't allowed to go out to join them at playtime and had to leave.
73/122 pictures in 2022: National do something nice day - 5th October - who knew? This was a tricky one, but I decided it was very nice of the school to invite us and we all had a very nice time. As I couldn't take pictures of the classrooms nor the children, here's the plate of biscuits (after we had helped ourselves) and a cup of coffee.
Tonight our kiddos came over to have dinner and play "Guitar Hero".
Little did we know that we had a surprise.
Our daughter and son-in-law are expecting our first grandbaby.
We could not be happier.
Are blessings from above
Enriching our lives
With wisdom and love
Just perfect!

My Maternal Grandparent's Wedding Day in 1920.
Looks like it was a happy affair ?
They went on to have 6 children, including my mother.
The relationship between grandparents and grandchildren has always been an important factor for the development of a child. Stories, tales, memories have always been fascinated by the world of childhood. The grandparents had and have a role, an identity that enrich the family consists only of parents. Here we are in June 1971 in Genzano. The picture shows a working class, but for the love and relationship, when it is real and genuine, does not change even in a different context than this.

When I found this small black and white Polaroid of my grandparents among my mother's photographs, it made me cry. It so perfectly encapsulates my memories of my grandparents.
He was a big, gruff farmer who traded knives with his cronies on the town square, had a constant supply of funny sayings, and would drive fast over the bumps on the dirt roads around the farm, to the delight of my sister and me when we were alone with him in the car. He was also the devoted owner of small dogs like Buddy, sitting on his lap in this picture. After he retired from farming he would sit in his chair by the living room window all day with Buddy or the current dog on his lap and watch the country road that passed the farm.
My grandmother who sits behind him was a wonderfully quiet and sweet person who devoted her life to her family.
* Added thoughts: I am gratified that this photographs has resonated with others on flickr. It has set me thinking about my grandparents and their dogs. When my grandfather died he had a Chihuahua named Penny. My grandmother was coming to live with my parents and could not take the dog. They knew how much she had meant to my grandfather and wanted to find her the right home. One of the neighbors knew a family with an adult son with severe cerebral palsy. They wanted a dog for him that would be quite and gentle with him. My mother said they brought him to meet Penny and put him on the floor with her and it was love at first meet.
* 7/30/12 Goodness gracious! I I posted this picture over 4 years ago and when I came back to it today I noticed two typos I had missed. Wonder if there are more?
This was a commission from Briar and her father, a portrait of her grandparents Robert and Jean. They are massively cute, obviously.
This photo is special to me because it is a collaboration of three generations of family and photography. The camera photographed in this photo was once used by my Grandfather. One of the three light sources that I used to light this camera was being held by my dad (also a photographer). I enjoyed the idea of taking a photo which involved the help of the two men that helped influence my photographic eye.
The couple in this photo are my Grandfather and Grandmother. RIP to both amazing souls!
