Reeweg, Schiermonnikoog island, The Netherlands.

The Innovationen tower, the first of the two towers being built in the project called Norra Tornen, designed by Dutch architect Reinier de Graaf of OMA for a site in the outskirts of the Vasastaden district of Stockholm. This tower, which opened in 2018, is 125 m tall, with 35 floors and 182 units. All apartments were sold out even before construction began.

The second tower, called the Helix, will be shorter, 100 m, 30 floors and ix expected to open in 2020.

The highly detailed effigy of count Gottfried IV von Arnsberg (+1371), made around or shortly after his death by the 'Master of the St. Peter Portal Apostle'.

The armour depicted shows the typical German style of the years between 1360 and 1380: a diverse combination of much mail and plate (or cuir bouilli), an already globose breast of the coat of plates, a jupon, and retention chains. By 1380 full plate for the limbs would become generally more adopted, a trend that started much earlier in England and France.

The count wears (Westphalian/North Western German) armour of the 1360s:

- a rounded bascinet with a camail attached by vervelles on a very decorative band

- a jupon with edges ending in trefoils, probably worn over a coat of plates, depicting the Arnsberg arms: the eagle being 'canting arms', a pun on the Middle Low German word for eagle. 'Arend' is still the present-day Dutch word; 'Adler' being the High German word.

- three retention chains for the sword, dagger and great helm are attached to the breast

- a hauberk with three-quarter sleeves and a skirt ending in four points (front, sides, behind)

- a decorative hip belt; the bronze dagger and sword are more recent replacements

- splinted vambraces (similar to www.flickr.com/photos/roelipilami/8602415024/in/album-721... ), worn under the mail sleeves, and early hourglass gauntlets

- rerebraces, attached by points, which are apparently typical for Western Germany/Westphalia; compare to those seen in the almost contemporary Osnabrücker Altar: www.flickr.com/photos/roelipilami/51117835883/in/album-72...

- plate (?) cuisses made up of two parts, the upper part ending in a toothed edge

- poleyns with early wings worn over those cuisses and mail cuisses as well (?) (the edge is visible), which are worn over mail chausses with narrow indented greaves (similar to the rerebraces)

- narrow sabatons on the feet and rowel spurs

Note the crested tournament helm (with an eagle and hearts) on the sides of the tomb.

The effigy of count Friedrich IV of Moers (ca. 1380-1448), on the left, shows us a beautiful example of a Western German armour from the late 1440s, early 1450s.

Note the plackart (reinforcement of the kastenbrust breastplate) with flutings, similar to those on the tassets and pauldrons.

The besagews (rondels) on the armpits are identical to those on the couters.

The visored sallet is worn together with a bevor.

Friedrich also wears the knightly collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a title which was bestowed upon him by duke Philip the Good of Burgundy in Lille, Flanders, in 1431.

The effigy has undergone some restoration, i.e. the 'darker' parts.

His lower right arm and gauntlet, a small part on the left of the bottom fauld/tasset, his left poleyn, and parts of the greaves, are all later additions.

Friedrich's effigy is accompanied by that of his son, count Vincenz of Moers (+1499), depicted in a late 15th century gothic armour: www.flickr.com/photos/roelipilami/50498628301/in/album-72...

These beautiful roses were on a table in one of the most enchanting coffee shops (Polka) in Graaf Reinet (yes in the middle of the Karroo - GR is not called "the Jewel of the Karroo" for nothing). Such a happy day walking through this beautiful little town and then resting on the verandah for a delicious lunch while inside there was much merriment at a kitchen tea. Springbok all the way home in the country next to the road .

This is for all you colour starved northern hemisphere people, I hope you warm up soon.

I know these poor roses are blurred - I think I am pulling my camera away too quickly at the end of a shot - no follow through if I were a golfer. Could have covered this up with a texture but though I am painfully aware of the flaw of the blur here I have just left it.

Wandeling 1074: Asselt.

Swedish model and TV celebrity

Dutch postcard by Polydor, Den Haag (The Hague).

Yesterday, 27 November 2019, Dutch actor and singer Manfred de Graaf died at the age of 79. He appeared in several Dutch films including the box office hits Turks Fruit (1973) and De Lift (1983). Manfred de Graaf became a national celebrity in the 1980s as doctor Hans Lansberg in the popular TV series Zeg 'ns Aaa/Say aaaa. His television wife Sjoukje Hooymayer, in the series Lydie van der Ploeg, died three months ago. In January, the actor would have turned 80.

Manfred Marcel de Graaf (since 2003 Manfred Marcel Derman) was born in Warmond in 1939 as the son of a Romanian diplomat. Father Manfred Derman was Jewish and in 1943, he was murdered by the Nazis halfway through the Second World War. His mother remarried a man who was called De Graaf. Years later, the actor went in search of his family history. Queen Beatrix issued a decision in 2003 that changed his surname to Derman. "He saw it as his personal revenge on the Nazis, that they did not succeed in eradicating the name Derman", says his daughter Fien in the interview with the newspaper De Telegraaf. "With me, there was even a generation coming in. That same day I became Fien Derman." In 1954, Manfred de Graaf made his stage debut as a 15-year-old at the company Rotterdams Toneel in The remarkable Mr. Pennypacker by Liam O'Brien. Around 1960 he moved to the Haagse Comedie (the Hague Comedie), where he remained acting until 1974.

Manfred de Graaf was seen in many feature films and TV series. He made his feature film debut in Makkers, staakt uw wild geraas/That joyous eve (Fons Rademakers, 1960) with Ellen Vogel. He also appeared in Rademakers' De dans van de reiger/The Dance of the Heron (Fons Rademakers, 1966), starring Gunnel Lindblom and Jean Desailly. Another international film in which he appeared was the American children's film The Little Ark (James B. Clark, 1972) about two children, believed to be World War II orphans, that befriend a local fisherman (Theodore Bikel) after he saves them from a flood. He also appeared in Turks fruit/Turkish Delight (1973) directed by Paul Verhoeven and filmed by Jan de Bont. The film is a love story of an artist and a young woman, starring Rutger Hauer and Monique van de Ven. Turkish Delight is the most successful film of the Dutch cinema ever. His other films include the coming-of-age drama Twee vorstinnen en een vorst/Two Queens and One Consort (Otto Jongerius, 1981) and the science-fiction horror film De Lift/The Lift (Dick Maas, 1983). The VARA television series Zeg 'ns Aaa ran from 1981 to 1993 and was huge popular in The Netherlands and Flanders. In 2003-2004 he also participated in the tour of the theatre version of Zeg' ns Aaa. He played in dozens of other theatre pieces and TV series and was director of the commercial television broadcaster Tele8 in Twente. De Graaf had been incurably ill since the beginning of this year, but kept it quiet for the outside world. He was married twice, to Monique Spierdijk and Nelly Robertha Wolthers.
