On a beautiful autumn morning, the Rocky Mountaineer climbs toward Tunnel 1 just east of Plainview, Colorado, on October 19, 2022. With evergreens dominant on much of Colorado’s Front Range mountains, fall color can be sparse. But a touch of autumn can be scene here, with a few golden aspens in the background and sumac turning bright red on the fill to the tunnel.

A westbound run of the Rocky Mountaineer follows Amtrak train 5 a few blocks behind (Amtrak was exiting Tunnel 2 while this train approached West Rocky), as it heads upgrade toward Big 10 Curve west of Rocky, Colorado, on October 12, 2022. Ever since my first visit to the quad cities I’ve wanted to catch a train on the former Milwaukee Road trestle in East Davenport. The Eldridge branch is only currently served by CP local BD70 which I hadn’t been fortunate enough to catch going there before. However on my last trip to the Quads I happened to be in the right place at the right time to be able to take advantage of information gleaned from the radio that BD70 was heading that way.
As it turned out, this day the job had a GP40-3 and GP38-2 combo for power on the point of 26 loaded hoppers. The power wasn’t sufficient for the grade up the hill from the river and they started slowing considerably as they dug into the grade on the bridge over Rt 67. They stalled out over the road which began a more than 20 minute ordeal for the crew as they’d roll back a little, take a run at it and gain maybe 15-20 feet at a time until they got to a point where they gave up and called for help.
A utility man from the nearby yard showed up to tie down the rear 10 cars which weren’t on the bridge yet and cut those off. Once that was done they were able to get under way again and the head end made it clear of the bridge and a little further up the grade before stalling out yet again with the engineer complaining about the power he got stuck with this day. This time the conductor was able to walk back and cut off the rear 6 cars leaving the two geeps with just 10 cars which they were finally able to get over the top of the grade.
This shot shows them in the middle of repeated runs at the grade before they called for help. In the background crossing the Mississippi River you can see the Government bridge connecting Davenport with Rock Island.

Entering Shady Dale, GA, a trio of CaterParrott Railnet (CPR) GP40-3's lead a lengthy train that originated in Madison to interchange with Norfolk Southern. The majority of the traffic on this day came from Georgia Pacific, making for a nearly dedicated train of boxcars and loaded chip hoppers.
Paducah and Louisville local LML1 ducks under a venerable wooden road bridge in the tight confines of a rock cut near Eastview, KY, on the eastward leg of a round-trip between Lietchfield and Vine Grove. The train consists mostly of loaded rock hoppers for Scotty's Contracting & Stone moving between the company's quarry in Lietchfield and a new stone yard in Vine Grove. The engines in view are actually bringing up the rear of the train. LML1 combined with a work train at Lietchfield and the crew assembled the train in a 2x3 power configuration for the trip to Vine Grove. The cars for the work train and some of the locomotives would later be set out at Cecilia on the return westbound trip.
An hour prior to this photograph, the tracks through this rock cut were completely lit by the afternoon sun. A 25-mph heat restriction slowed the train's progress enough for the sun to swing around and leave most of the rock cut in shadows by the time the train arrived. While there was enough sun for a "spotlit" shot of the nose, it is hard not to be somewhat disappointed with this image knowing what could have been.

Engineer Nick Justice wastes absolutely no time getting up to track speed, skirting across the diamonds at Blue Island JCT and the Cal Sag Channel in run 8 with the GP40-3 rebuild twins (IHB 4011/4013) bound for Union Pacific’s Proviso Yard. After 4 years, this pair is still looking as fresh as ever, as these units are two of six on the roster with PTC. After being assigned on the 115 Burns Harbor Turn that utilizes the NS Chicago Line for the past 3 years, they’ve recently been taken off since CP/Metra is making all Harbor trains into Bensenville Yard initialize PTC for the past 2 months…something that’s been a thorn in my side this year as they don’t always run to Proviso where they don’t need PTC and would use Harbor power. The past couple Bensenville trips in recent weeks have ran with foreign power, as Blue Island Yard doesn’t always have their PTC units around…something that should change here in the near future. An unusual evening westbound on the Rook Sub made an appearance in my area today. Sporting a GP35-3/GP40-3 combo, the 385 with empty sand hoppers from Steubenville slips around the back side of the village of Zoar on the way west to Brewster on Oct. 27, 2019.

Moving up Track 79 of the KCT North-South Corridor at Old Union Depot Interlocking as they approach The Incline is CPKC train YKK07-19, "Run 7", which is in the process of making a loop around the city from the former MILW Coburg Yard to CPKC's Knoche Yard with 28 cars, known as going "around the world". Their power is a sharp looking pair of KCS GP40-3's, the lead unit originally built for the Frisco and the trailing unit originally built for the Penn Central.
The CPKC only delivers and pulls from Coburg now and no longer does any switching there as KCS had previously done. Most often when returning to Knoche, they'll shove back into the east end via West Wye-Air Line JCT, using a caboose as a shoving platform. On a day when the caboose isn't available, they make this circuitous route around downtown past Union Station and the West Bottoms and enter Knoche from the west. 6/20/23.
This westbound CP freight is passing under the wooden trestle bridge at Nichols Road, Newtonville, led by CP RS-18u 1846, NS SD40-2 1607 and HLCX GP40-3 4406. This bridge, and the one beside it spanning the CN, have since been demolished.
A cold but sunny Monday morning back in early November finds the CSX Mon Sub local D768 southbound at East Monongahela, PA. An MPI GP40-3 rebuild leading a GP40-2 and GP38-2S make easy work of handling 49 loaded cars of salt for transloading at 3 River Marine and Rail's facility in Speers, PA.
The Mon Sub is an easy piece of railroad to follow with it's 25mph track speed and paralleling roads practically the entire length of it. Running into favorable light made for a nice morning and afternoon of grabbing some great shots. By time they finished up their work at 3 rivers that afternoon they were returning back north in just as favorable light. Even lucking into them bringing something back to Demmler instead of light engines, with a lone empty plastics car.
These salt trains run consistently year round off of the Rochester and Southern, for transloading at various facilities across the eastern seaboard. But throughout the years CSX has (for no known rhyme or reasoning) fiddled back and forth over this particular customer, sometimes running as a unit train to Speers itself. Or instead sometimes terminating the train at Demmler Yard in McKeesport for the D768 to hand off to their final destination.
