When the trailing Norfolk Southern power developed issues at East Binghamton Yard in Conklin, New York this Canadian Pacific SD40-2 was added to the point. My friend Jon Kayes tipped us off, so Keith Latimer and I headed towards Sunbury, Pennsylvania on this nice, sunny day. Before catching 11R here at the 273 signals in Dalmatia, we followed NS local H3W south to Herndon with Conrail-painted GP38-2 5259 leading. Position light signals, standard cab EMDs and a variety of scenery made the Buffalo Line my favorite place when I lived in the Keystone State. Plus, it was a spirited chase! Afterwards, we celebrated my (belated) birthday at Appalachian Brewing Company in Harrisburg, what a great day it was.

A quartet of EMD GP varients accelerate train WAJO out of Warren, PA as they pass through the truss bridge over the Allegheny River.

Four Southern GP38-2’s and a GP38 wheel a southbound TOFC train through Catlett, Virginia.

I just started rescanning some older Illinois Central stuff and chose this one to post first. We're at Homewood, IL and lucky enough to catch a southbound leaving the yard. Three orange and cream four axle EMDs are cranking it up as they pass me. Up front is a GP38-2, the 9631. He's got a GP40, the 3048, and what I think might be an ex GM&O GP35 third out. It looks like it has Alco trucks underneath it. Anyway, a solid set of any color on the IC was kind of neat. Of course, this wasn't yesterday. It was May 20, 1975.

After working industries on the east side of the Ohio River in West Virginia, Norfolk Southern local C17 with a pair of OLS GP38s crosses back into Ohio as it passes through the massive truss bridge in Steubenville.

A pair of Operation Lifesaver painted GP38-2's cross over the Ohio River as they lead Norfolk Southern local C17 into Steubenville, Ohio. The train is heading back towards the yard at Mingo Junction, Ohio after working industries along the Wells Industrial Track on the West Virginia side of the river.

The BNSF Transfer passes through 2nd Avenue in Birmingham, AL. on their way to interchange with NS at 32nd Street North Yard in Birmingham, AL. with GP38-2’s 2048 & 2046 in charge. For a while BNSF had these lettered for BNSF still in their blue & white EMD lease paint scheme. The trailing GP38-2 2046 is still in it’s Conrail blue paint scheme at that time. Both of these have since been repainted into BNSF orange. The lead GP38-2 2048 is a former MKT/EMD GP40 that was rebuilt into GP38-2 specifications.

The last day of Conrail’s second year finds an interesting lashup waiting to tackle the grade to Horseshoe Curve and beyond. A GP38-2 and two GP38’s are joined by two C424’s and a U23B on a westbound manifest passing the Amshak station that served Altoona at the time.

Leased GMTX GP38-2 2233 is leading Eastern Maine Railway's 907 west past a pair of old Canadian Pacific block signals on the Mattawamkeag Sub at Danforth. Baskahegan Stream is seen flowing in the distance behind the train, connecting the Mattawamkeag River with the Crooked Lake Flowage on the other side of Danforth, which the railroad skirts around the edge of.

A quartet of Kansas City Southern GP's are on the point of CPKC LWY101, making a special move of M1 Abrams tanks from Alliance to Wylie after picking them up from BNSF. CN 401 has Dash9 and a GP38-2 for power (CN 2727 & CN 4712) as it passes the Turcot Interchange. CN 2727 was rebuilt from wrecked unit CN 2667 in 2005 and is the only Dash9 on CN with a 27XX number to not have an IC reporting mark.

Eight years after the creation of Conrail, black patched ex-Penn Central units still roamed the system, such as this GP38-2 at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. There was nothing more disappointing than waiting for a train and finding out that one of them was leading when the train came into view.

Buffalo and Pittsburgh train WAJO notches up as it pulls a long train of asphalt and oil tank cars past the brick depot in Sheffield, PA with a quartet of GP's. Normally entirely nocturnal during the winter months, the early call time of 1500 allowed most of the eastbound run to Johnsonburg to be in light. A recent snowfall in the area contrasted with the orange locomotives running through the landscape.
