Oh the good old days!
Some of us that are old enough may remember our neighborhood service stations. As you pulled in you would drive over a black rubber hose and a bell would ring alerting the attendant to meet you at the pump. The attendant would pump your gas, clean your windshield and check your oil. If you were real nice the attendant would even check your tire pressure. All this for only 35 cents a gallon!

I love all the different colored neon signs! Ford had such high hopes for this car, but as things should have it, it turned out to be a complete flop. Being really strange looking, having numerous mechanical build quality problems and the recession of 1958 sure didn't help.

In 1980 we went to the US for a road trip of several months. Our Chevy Impala 1976 (V8, 5L for the petrol heads) brought us 20.000 km across the continent, from east to south, to west. Its air conditioning alone already consumed more than my entire european car back home. All pictures were taken with my first Canon A1 and fujichrome 400, but bear the traces of wear and tear and the digitalization afterwards.
This is where my previous pic of the watermelon umbrella came from. These two creative girls dressed to match their umbrellas! At one point they switched umbrellas! You gotta love that skirt!

My mom, dad and I and were there to make a return on something we got for Christmas but really didn't want. This was before the era of "regifting".
This forgotten scene was taken with my brand-new Kodak Pocket Instamatic model 40 camera. For some reason the pack came with a cartridge of Verichrome Pan 110 film. (instead of Kodacolor II).

This was taken in 2020. I cannot do this kind of shots anymore. The sunny bright day is a disaster for me. It will be so foggy and I can't see anything in sunlight. The persons in the scene are in the dark and tiny in the distance. I would not be able to focus either.
Even now when I look at the picture on the computer screen, the flowers are all white and over-exposed to my eyes.
I miss those good days when all things all people I love are still with me.

One of the often seen car show accessories to remind us of the good old days of drive-ins and car hops.
The East River flows in the murky darkness on the left side. All these lights were made possible by the Consolidated Edison plant in the center left puffing away coal smoke. It would be another 20 years before a TV antennae spire topped off the Empire State Building.
My Dad took dozens of Kodachrome slides of their adventures discovering the country. In later years I spoke to my Mom about the three round-trips they experienced. She didn't recall bringing any extra food or water in case the car stalled out in the middle of nowhere. I'm hoping that her memory was not correct.
It's amazing how a six volt powered straight six engine with a three gear turbo hydromatic transmission and 15 inch bias ply tires made it all the way across the country and back not once, but three different times! No power steering, no power brakes and no air conditioning. Also, no National Interstate Highway System yet. They took all local roads.
I enjoy these celebrations every summer. Sure can't wait to be there again in 1918, which is just a short year away from now!

After our trip from New York, I wanted to top-off my car. This Aero station's price was a REAL bargain! For some reason, everybody kept staring at my Honda Accord. Once I filled up, the motor began running rough and the "Check Engine" light went on.
