The Safari was marketed as a passenger as well as cargo in a number of configurations, including recreational vehicles, First introduced in 1985 as a mid-sized, rear wheel drive vehicle featuring a V-6 engine; unibody construction with a separate front engine/suspension sub-frame; leaf-spring rear suspension; rear bi-parting doors and a seating capacity of up to eight passengers. Along with its siblings the Chevrolet Astro and Pontiac Safari.

The second generation appeared for 1995 face lifted with an extended nose that resembled the then-new full-size Express vans. Also for 1995, the shorter length body was dropped. The vans remained mostly unchanged until withdrawn in 2005

I think Yoshikatsu-san is the only person I know that's a huge fan of the Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari vans. I'm just imaging how excited he would have been if he had come across dozens and dozens of the vans, all parked together, like I did when Mari and I walked a very strange route on our way for lunch at Cafe de l'Orangerie. A friend of mine once described my photography to someone else thusly: James is either taking a picture of a beautiful flower, or of garbage. One person's garbage is another person's Wabi-sabi...

GMC Safari

Also marketed as the Chevrolet Astro and the Pontiac Safari, the GMC Safari was a mid-sized van built by the General Motors Corporation between 1985 and 2005, with two generations being covered during its 20 year lifetime. This vehicle was marketed in passenger as well as cargo and livery configurations. General construction of the vehicle included a 4.3L General Motors V6 producing 190hp with unibody construction, a separate front engine/suspension sub-frame, leaf-spring rear suspension, rear bi-parting doors and a seating capacity of up to eight passengers.

Primary competitors for the Safari were the likes of the Plymouth Voyager/Dodge Caravan, as well as to foreign intruders such as Toyota products. The Safari was marketed as a minivan, though sized between the Chevrolet Venture/Lumina APV unibody minivan and the full-size Chevy Van/Express. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, it had powertrain components in common with GM's other light trucks and up to a 5,500lb towing capacity.

Both Pontiac and GMC have used the Safari nameplate (GMC belonged to the Pontiac/GMC Division), Pontiac used the nameplate on several of its station wagon models from 1955-1989. The two Safaris, both Pontiac and GMC, were marketed simultaneously, at times by the same dealership from 1985 through to 1989.

Cars like these are common in the United States, but many find their way here to Britain as well. Their sheer size and huge amounts of power make them the ideal motorhome to British alternatives, although the expense of importing cars from outside the EU has put many off the idea.

Komachi-dori is the main thoroughfare of the ancient power center of Kamakura, running between the train station and the main Shinto temple in a dead straight line.

I am on the pedestrian path on the median, and the stone lantern is one of many built along it.

Passing by me is a Chevrolet Astro minivan. It was never officially sold in Japan, and none were even built right-hand-drive, but the Astro found a cult following in Japan in the 1990s as grey-market imports, undergoing modifications such as the addition of amber rear turn signals to meet Japanese requirements. While registration taxes rise dramatically with the age of the vehicle and very few cars over ten years old remain on the road in Japan as a result, specialty cult vehicles like the Astro are unique enough that the extra cost is still worth it.
