47 years after the Stonewall Riots of June 28, 1969

The 47th NYC Pride March started at noon on June 26, at 5th Avenue and 36th Street in Manhattan. The route proceeded through Midtown down 5th Avenue, before heading west into Greenwich Village, ending at Christopher and Greenwich Streets.

Heritage of Pride, Inc. (HOP / NYC Pride) is a non-profit organization that plans and produces New York City's official LGBT ( Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Pride events each year.

Heritage of Pride hosts New York City’s Pride events in commemoration of the Stonewall Riots of 1969.

Stonewall riots happened 47 years ago in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City.

The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the LGBT community against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. They are widely considered to constitute the single most important event leading to the LGBT liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT equal rights in the United States.

The 2016 Pride March happened on the one-year anniversary of the Obergefell v. Hodges decision, the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.

The 2016 march also happened to come just days after Stonewall Inn, the famous gay bar located in Greenwich Village, was designated as the first national LGBT monument in the U.S.

On Monday, June 27th 2016 the Stonewall National Monument (U.S. National Park Service) designation took place in New York City. The monument sits across the street from The Stonewall Inn, a National Historic Landmark known for its involvement in the beginning of the modern struggle for civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) Americans.

Remarks from - President Barack Obama June 2016

"I’m designating the Stonewall National Monument as the newest addition to America’s national parks system. Stonewall will be our first national monument to tell the story of the struggle for LGBT rights. I believe our national parks should reflect the full story of our country – the richness and diversity and uniquely American spirit that has always defined us. That we are stronger together. That out of many, we are one."

Hillary Clinton made an unannounced appearance and was joined by New York State Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Rev. Al Sharpton

According to organizers, around 30,000 people marched in the parade itself. Law enforcement officials expected that there would be around 2.5 million attendees in total, and that more or less comports with CBS News' reporting, which found that almost 2 million spectators joined the marchers.

Of the many observers on the rooftop patios, I chose this one on the corner of 8th and Hennepin in downtown Minneapolis. It was the most colorful, and the corner location made a very nice compositon, I thought.

This is what Historian Corey found out about this dancer:

Other than the fact that she appeared in the 1947 movie Jivin' in Bebop with Dizzy Gillespie, not much else is known about the beautiful exotic dancer known as Sahji. That film, no more than a string of musical performances, presents Sahji in all of her "exotic" otherness doing a dance that reminds me very much of what "praise dancers" now do in church. Hmm ... are they the original exotic dancers?

Sahji was also known as Madeleine Jackson, and is known to have been married to musician Leroy Harris, a saxophonist with the Earl Hines Orchestra.

This collection of photos originally belonged to a Cotton Club chorus girl, reportedly a headline dancer by the name of Margot, who appeared at the club between 1933-39.

One inscription reads "To Margot, You are tops as a dancer. And as a lady, you are even higher. Best wishes for your present & future happiness. Sincerely, Madeline Sahji Jackson." Under that it says "Sahji" Cousin Madeleine.

The inscription on the last photo says "To Margo, my country cuz. Wish you would join me again in this mess. 'Best Always, Madeleine .. Sahji."

Madeleine "Sahji" Jackson ... NOT YOUR EVERYDAY COUNTRY COUSIN!

The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay (LGBT) community against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn (nightclub / bar / disco), located on Christopher Street in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. They are widely considered to constitute the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States.

Many pride events happen in the month of June to commemorate this date.

Proceeds from weekend donations will go to Brother Help Thyself, an organization through which member-clubs raise and disburse funds to AIDS service providers and the GLBTQ community.

I was waling to my car, when I saw this young man standing in the transit station. He was laughing with an older man, I said he had such a pleasant way about him that I fished out one of my cards and walked over to him.

I introduced myself, gave him the card and asked if I could take a photograph of him. He said, "Oh, I don't have myself the way I want to yet."

I said, that what I saw was his joyous spirit, his smile, and his dark eyes. I also said that I liked his casual look and he was just fine.

Well, you would have thought I handed him a solid gold ingot, and said laughing . . . "Oh my, you made my day."

He was so at ease with himself that the only coaching I did was on the second shot. Other then that, I think he is a natural and will photograph beautifully. Again, he thanked me, and off I went to bring my Syrian flat bread and oil cured olives home for a snack.
