Migrating Monarch butterflies in Pacific Grove, California. We took a daytrip, which for us is almost a vacation, down the coast.

The monarchs migrate from the Canadian rockies to Mexico, and not every generation makes it to Mexico, but they somehow know how to get there. In Mexico, the Monarchs rely on fir forests to protect them from cold and rain in the winter, but their habitat in Mexico is being destroyed by illegal logging.

In Pacific Grove, they attach themselves to milkweed and sun themselves during the day because they're cold blooded. As night approaches, they huddle together to maintain their warmth during the cold of night.

I visited during mating season but didn't catch any of them wrestling in mid-air. They're pretty tough to photograph anyway because they're so small and fast and about 50 feet or more above your head.

The male Monarch has the insect version of GHB, aka ruffies, Rohypnol or the date rape drug. When he finds a female he likes, he sprays her with a chemical that stuns her. LOL. Some guys have it made.

This is near the end of the mating season, and the "Butterfly Lady" said that only about half of the migrating population was left, about 10,000 monarchs.

Another bus to come to Luton & District via Parfitt's was this rebodied Volvo B-10M dating from 1980, but carrying an East Lancs Body dating from 1994. This handsome bus became no.360 (GHB 574V) in the L&D fleet and was based at Luton for a brief time. It is seen in Luton's Manchester Street in 1996.
