Every bit the shit hole I remember

I decided to do a photo comparison of my cameras.

Since I got my x100s I've been using it all the time. So much so that I forgot just how BIG my 7D is. This is my 7D in it's smallest configuration as well. The main difference though is the weight. OH MY GOD, the x100s and GF3 are sooooo light compared to the 7D. Don't get me wrong, the 7D is an amazing camera, but to have that image quality is the size and weight of the x100s makes me really happy.

AF wise, the x100s seems about the same as the GF3, and the 7D is obviously the fastest. Ergo-wise, despite the weight, the 7D is still the comfiest to hold, but now I have my thumb grip on the x100s it makes it miles comfier. The GF3 is the worst to hold, but also the lightest, so you don't have as much pressure on your grip.

Experiments with an old Lumix compact camera.

Panasonic Lumix GF3 used for Kite Aerial Photography, the bits and pieces attached on top are for firing the shutter.

A micro servo presses the shutter button, the servo is controlled by a GenTimer (from Gentles Limited), this is a fantastic little device that can actuate the servo/shutter at intervals from as little as every 2 seconds all the way up to 30 seconds. The GenTimer and servo are powered by a single rechargeable CR123A battery which is rated at 3.7 volts 880mah. Fully charged the battery delivers 4.2 volts, the servo ceases having enough power to trigger the shutter when the voltage has dropped to 3.3 volts. I have taken over 10,000 photos on a single charge. A small toggle switch controls the power to the GenTimer/Servo.

The camera battery, when taking photos every 3-4 seconds has lasted for up to 1400 shots (multiple kite aerial photography sessions).

The Panasonic GF3 is a compact mirror-less interchangeable lens camera with a MicroFourThirds sensor. I have the 14mm (28mm in 35mm equivilent) f2.5 lens.

The weight of the camera, lens plus all the bits and pieces you see here in this photograph, including the tripod screw is 369g. The weight of the camera including battery and memory card is quoted by DPreview.com as being 319g, which means the extra bits weigh in at 50g.

Everything is mounted on a piece of aluminium tile trim, which has been carefully cut and shaped. Other similar setups on other cameras, are attached to the camera by the flash hotshoe, this camera doesn't have one (has a built in flash), so the cut tile trim is slotted into the camera strap attachments on each side of the camera. To maintain everything tensioned in the correct position (important for the servo) I have used a piece of elastic hooked under the lens.
