The 630-foot Gateway Arch is clad in stainless steel and built in the form of a weighted catenary arch. It is the world's tallest arch, the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere and Missouri's tallest accessible building. It is located at the site of St. Louis's founding on the west bank of the Mississippi River. Built as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States, it is the centerpiece of the Gateway Arch National Park. The Arch was designed by architect Eero Saarinen in 1947; construction began in February 1963 and was completed in October 1965. The monument opened to the public in June 1967.

It was time to keep moving as the day started to wind down some and still fueled on our Culver's run we made it up to Montezuma's Castle, although Montezuma was never actually there.

This whole trip though renewed that feeling of life inside of me, reminded me how much I want to continue on that road, and continue and continue and continue until I've driven down every road there is to drive down. I wish I could afford to make it happen, but every day I keep working to make that a reality.

Until then, trips like these will always be gateways to feeling reborn, even if only for a short while until the need to go again consumes me.

From my archives:

The Gateway Arch is the centerpiece of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri. It was built as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States. At 630 feet, it is the tallest man-made monument in the United States, Missouri's tallest accessible building and the largest architectural structure designed as a weighted or flattened catenary arch. Located on the west bank of the Mississippi River where the city of St. Louis was founded, the arch was designed by Finnish American architect Eero Saarinen and structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel in 1947. Construction began on February 12, 1963 and ended on October 28, 1965. The monument opened to the public on June 10, 1967.

I didn't get to go up to the top of the arch. Shortly before my visit, a tram had stalled while climbing to the top of arch and some visitors were trapped for about an hour before being rescued. You can read about it here:

Not much cloud detail around on this occasion but I think the bubbles in the pool just add that little bit extra to this sunset shot of the Mersey Gateway bridge.

Would you know my name,

If I saw you in heaven.

Will it be the same,

If I saw you in heaven.

I must be strong, and carry on.

Cause I know I don't belong...

Here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand,

If I saw you in heaven.

Would you help me stand,

If I saw you in heaven.

I'll find my way, through night and day.

Cause I know I just can't stay...

Here in heaven...

As with the previous image, this image was captured using two frames to create the single image you see here. With the gate in the centre and the two trees flanking both sides, the scene was too tempting to ignore.

Looking up from beneath it, I manually stitched two photos. The viewing windows appear prominently.

Steeton Hall Gateway is a listed ancient monument and is protected by English Heritage. It is situated about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west of South Milford. The gateway originally served a large hall, which was demolished and replaced by a house, which has since been converted into several dwellings. The gateway dates from the 15th century, and is one of four such structures which marked the corners of the estate. It has two arched passages, the large one in the centre to allow horsemen and carriages through and the smaller one to the left for footmen.

There are a spiral staircase which leads into a large room above the arch and a number of shields and coats of arms surrounding the structure.

Steeton Hall Gateway has been described as a "fair and stately structure in the brave days of old".
