Gabo Fountain in the gardens of St Thomas' Hospital. I've taken a number on long exposures of the Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) in the past, but have never succeeded in getting a clear shot of the clock dial. What do I need to do!

At the end of the first day of 2008, Gabo and Tati share some laughs before turning off the lights.

A twilight photo in the gardens of St Thomas Hospital in Westminster, London. Taken in late December 2016, this features Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Bridge in the background. Naturally this area is a mecca for travel photographers and it can be difficult to find an attractive position to photograph from without standing elbow-to-elbow with another photographer!

De ruimtelijke constructie die sinds 1957 de nieuwbouw van warenhuis De Bijenkorf aan de Coolsingel flankeert, was volgens Gabo een 'ideologische bijdrage tot het constructivisme'. Dat heeft vooral te maken met de bereikte integratie van architecturale en sculpturale benaderingen, met de transparantie van de omschreven ruimte en met de indruk van gewichtloosheid in een sculptuur van dit formaat en gewicht – het ding weegt circa 40.000 kilo.

Het werk dateert uit een periode waarin Gabo's vroege, strengere geometrisch-abstracte constructies reeds plaats hadden gemaakt voor vrijere constructies in een meer organische vormentaal. In een toelichting op het beeld aan de kunsthistoricus Herbert Read melde Gabo dat de organische structuur in de plantenwereld hem de inspiratie bood voor de structuur van het beeld. [Herbert Read, Gabo, Rotterdam 1958, z.p.]. De geleidelijke verandering van richting die in de elementen is toegepast, zorgt voor de suggestie van beweging.

Gabo zag de fundering van het beeld als wortels, die ervoor zorgen dat het bovengrondse stevig verankerd wordt. De twee blokken beton, bekleed met zwart marmer, vormen het equivalent van een stam. Hieruit groeien acht metalen takken, die elkaar bovenin raken. De donkere, fijnere kern staat voor het bladerdek.

Het beeld neemt, geheel conform de grondprincipes van het constructivisme, met een minimum aan massa een maximum aan ruimte in.

Gabo Island Lighthouse. Taken a couple of years ago but for some reason I missed putting it up on Flickr

it was around 10:30 AM Sunday morning when I was watching TV and to the right of it I noticed Gabo laying down and looking towards the balcony window. He was so perfectly illuminated.....and since I did not want him to run off, I took very gentle steps to get my G12 and the tripod. Outside was cloudy and snowing a bit and light also being reflected from the snow sitting on the balcony.
