General Jeb Stuart was an expert in reconnaissance and the use of cavalry to support offensive assaults during the U.S. Civil War.
James Ewell Brown Stuart was born on a plantation in Patrick County, Virginia on February 6th 1833. He was the eighth of eleven children born to Archibald Stuart who was a war veteran of the war of 1812. Stuarts's grandfather was a military man as well who commanded a regiment at the Battle of Guilford Court House during the American Revolutionary War. Stuart was home schooled initially and then attended Emory & Henry College from 1848-1850. Considering his family military history it came as no surprise when he was accepted into West Point Military Academy in 1850. It was during his education at West Point that Stuart became friends with Robert E. Lee in 1852 when Lee was appointed superintendent of the Academy ( In September 1852, Lee became the superintendent of West Point, and retained that post for three years).
JEB Stuart graduated from West Point in 1854 where he studied cavalry tactics, civil engineering, and excelled at horsemanship and received an honorary designation as a “cavalry officer’ due to his above average skills. Stuart was commissioned as a lieutenant Colonel in 1861 when he joined the Virginia Infantry. He served under Maj. Gen. Robert E. Lee and saw action at the “First Battle of Bull Run.“ He was promoted to Colonel in July and by September 1861 held the rank of Brigadier General. In 1862 Stuart led his cavalry brigade at the ‘Battle of Williamsburg” and later performed reconnaissance for Lee’s larger force and through his brilliant cavalry tactics and outmaneuvering of Union forces became a folk hero to the Confederacy and helped earn him his nickname “Knight of the Golden Spurs.”
Generations of historians have echoed the sentiment of those at the deathbed, ensuring Stuart a place among the world's most successful leaders of mobile strike forces. Yet his greatest contribution to military science was not in the realm of battlefield tactics but in his unerring ability to send his commanders accurate, specific, up-to-date reports of enemy movements and intentions — real-time strategic intelligence, as it is called today. It was this gift that Robert E. Lee emphasized in his famous lament that Stuart 'never brought me a piece of false information.'
Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart's last words were spoken on May 12, 1864, shortly before he died from a mortal wound received at the Battle of Yellow Tavern the day before. After asking two attending ministers to sing his favorite hymn, "Rock of Ages," Stuart made this statement: "I am going fast now. I am resigned; God's will be done."
