Located at the north end of the Bund, 1933 is five-floors of maze-like, concrete corridors. When walking through the building, you can’t help but feel a creepy, slaughterhouse vibe in places (one of the walkways is called Cattle Road), although these days this place of death has been has been transformed with trendy shops, boutiques and restaurants. The very top levels of the main building have been converted into a large open event space, with glass floors providing yet another eerie perspective into this fascinating building.

I’ve been out of work for 5 weeks after having a major heart attack. This image sort of captures how I felt on some of those days alone in my apartment - having all the time to do anything I wanted, but ending up doing very, very little and feeling very useless as the rest of the world lived on and I just existed in recovery mode. My doctor says that for someone in my condition, that’s the best thing to do – do nothing. But I feel that I squandered the first 3 weeks – my only semi-accomplishment getting halfway through Against the Day.
And then midway through last week, maybe knowing that this phase was ending, for some reason I kicked into overdrive and ended up getting a lot done – taking some decent shots and drawing a couple of things that sort of suggests some glimmer of hope that I’m making progress in learning how to draw. I guess that’s something.
Of course, it all does me no good this morning when I hit the office the for first time and get back to “reality”.
