Great Dorset Steam Fair 2000

Scene from an annual festival ~ carnival held every March in Melbourne. Festivities include a street parade, water skiing, fireworks, the funfair, and a crazy "birdman" competition where contestants wear (usually) homemade "wings" and jump off a high platform into the local main river to see who can get the farthest.

Old scanned color slide.

An unused postcard of a travelling funfair at Bank Top with no indication of the identity of the photographer.

I was intrigued by the part advertisement atop the ride: "Twigdon's Grand Stud Of.." so I googled the phrase. Up comes a reference to two families in 1901 with the surname Twigdon both roundabout proprietors operating in the midlands.

This image is from the Eric Brassington Collection.

In the same collection is another unused postcard made from the same photograph. The other image is smaller than the one illustrated here (although both cards are the same regular postcard size) and shows more of the old Workhouse, the building at left. It is darker too and both cards have different styles of postcard back. The photograph has thus been used at different times with different prints and different postcard backs.

The HUGE spinning ride as part of the fun fair attractions, Christchurch Park fireworks night 2012, with a shadow silhouette of myself taking the shot!

Many photos of this on the card that evening, the lighting changed every now and then and different effects could be captured.

A slight fail on my part, i didn't get one image of the thing not moving to show what it looked like!!.... Imagine a straight arm that spins from the middle with a chair pod that could seat six at each end.... this thing flew round once it got going, a revolution in four seconds i reckon at full speed!! When one group of chairs were exchanging punters ( victims!?) the other would be resting for a while right up high at the other end of the vertical arm, must have been a great view, but not one i cared to see for myself!!

Needs to be seen on a dark background (lightbox) so press L or click on the image.............

And now for something completely different...

A digital interlude. And, yes, some colour.

Thanks to Greg the lens is cool :-)

Travelling showmen are generally a friendly bunch of people. These two gentlemen saw me photographing the transport and asked me to take this picture of them - the faces behind the names so often seen on Flickr. The chap with the glasses is John Warren, owner of the ERF, and with him is James Whayman.

The Gallopers, the funfair village has set up on North Park in Dunham as part of the Christmas Light Trail, expect to spend a fortune!!!!
