St Andrew, Metton, Norfolk
Metton's is a church that I keep coming back to. It's handily placed for revisits, being set just south of Cromer, one of my regular starting points for bike rides. But there is something else too, something that seems to call me back to experience its quiet, dim stillness above the lonely road of the village.
I first came here with the late Tom Muckley in the summer of 2005, if you could call it a summer that year. Long, sultry days in June gave a promise of things to come, but the promise was never really fulfilled. July was not a particularly wet one, but neither was it very sunny. In East Anglia, we awoke again and again to gloomy cloud and a kind of ineffectual drizzle that eventually petered out, the clouds breaking. But the days never warmed up, and all too soon evening closed in. By early August, the hedgerows were still as green as they had been six weeks previously, and the conservation areas of graveyards had become jungles.
There was an illusion that the summer was still held in a fitful suspense. But already, the barley and wheat fields were being harvested, the lanes clogged by mud from combines and tractors, the signs all around of everything being safely gathered in. The evenings became cooler, the horse chestnuts began threatening to turn. Soon, it would be time for back to school promotions in the town shops, and the excitement of posters for harvest suppers on village noticeboards. Soon, it would be autumn.
But all that was in the future. In the first few days of August, the low cloud began to retreat, and there were high skeins of it dissolving above the rolling hills south of Cromer. Too early in the day to take advantage of it, we headed under overcast skies through tiny lanes banked up with green hedges. All the roads were narrow, and it seemed impossible that we were less than two miles from the nearest A road, less than six miles from Cromer, less than two hundred miles from central London. The fields were silent, the stillness in the air timeless.
Through the high banks we twisted, eventually coming out into the deep cut village of Metton, barely a hamlet really. A few council houses straggled beside the church. There were some larger, older houses to the east, and a farmer had cut a maze through his crops for children to run wild and freely in. We could hear their shouts from the churchyard. It was a lovely place to be, at once ancient and yet full of young life.
Most recently I returned to Metton in June 2019. The weather forecast had promised sunshine, but I'd got out at Roughton Road station under heavy cloud, and my bike ride to Felbrigg, my first port of call, had been into the chill of a wind carrying the occasional misty shreds of a sea fret from the coast, invisible beyond the northern horizon. But as I came into Metton, the clouds parted, and I felt the warmth of the sun for the first time that day like a benediction, and I pushed my bike through the awkward gate into the narrow churchyard.
St Andrew is a simple, aisleless 14th century church, heavily Victorianised with the introduction of late medieval-style window tracery. The high pitched nave roof rather overwhelms it all. As often in this part of Norfolk, refurbishing of the flint has been a cheap option, and that seems to have happened on the tower here. The most interesting feature is at the foot of the tower, for there is a processional way running from north to south, the western face of the tower being hard against the churchyard boundary. The northern side of the chancel is windowless now, but the prospect from the south, away from the village street, is gentle and timeless.
It must be said that this is always a gloomy interior to step into. This is mostly the fault of the Victorian restoration, which ceilured the roof, leaving nothing but a functionless wallplate with fascinating grotesques on it. The restoration here was fairly middle-of-the-road. The town church benches must have seemed the very thing in the 1870s, but today they are characterless and dull, out of keeping with the peace outside. You can't help thinking that the nave would be improved if they were replaced with modern wooden chairs. But the chancel recalls earlier days, rustic and simple, with a pammented floor and bare furnishings. The flowers make it feel a place at once well-loved and well-used, a delight. There are roundels of Flemish glass in the east window, set here by the Dennis King workshop in the early 1960s. A bishop stands and a monk kneels before the crucifixion. Another monk, a donor perhaps, kneels before St Jerome in the desert. An angel holds a chalice and a crucifix.
By the south door, hidden under the table, is a fine civilian brass to Robert and Matilda Doughty. Robert died in 1493, and presumably the brass was put in place before the death of his wife, because the place for her dates has been left blank. There are also a couple of brass inscriptions in the nave. One is directly beside the fine, if over-plastered, Norman tub font, which rather looks as if it was originally designed to stand against a wall or a pillar.
A curiosity is welded to the north wall, beside the door. This is the 19th century parish truncheon, a fascinating survival. These objects were symbols of authority rather than implements of aggression, but all the same I couldn't help wondering if it had cracked a few parish heads, and quite what the 18th century parishioners would say if they could come back and see it so fondly displayed.
I stood for a while, breathing in the silence. A bird started up in the churchyard, but it seemed distant. It was time to go. It struck me, not for the first time, that there is something sad about this church. Not exactly oppressive, for it calls me back again and again, but a feeling that this Victorian interior which had seemed so bright and earnest a century and a half ago has faded. It has seen its congregation shrink, as if they were leaving one by one, leaving only an echoing emptiness, except for services. The patina of the varnish and the tiles has dulled, and the whole place broods beneath the ceilure. Only the chancel still seems alive.
And there was something else, of course. As I signed the visitors' book, I noticed that several recent visitors mentioned their prayers for April. I thought that this was a lovely thing, that they remembered. I remembered too. Thirteen year old April Fabb's disappearance on the edge of this tiny village in the spring of 1969 haunted me as a little boy at the time, and still haunts East Anglia today. It regularly reappears in the news, most recently because of the event's fiftieth anniversary. Outside, beside the porch, an inscription to her memory on a headstone reads: Will you of your charity remember in your prayers APRIL FABB a child who disappeared from this parish in April 1969 of whom nothing has since been heard.

The Festino di Santa Rosalia (u fistinu in Sicilian) takes place in the month of July in Palermo. It is one of the Sicilian religious celebrations to be officially recognized as an intangible heritage of Italy by the Central Institute for demo-ethno-anthropology (IDEA), [1] instituted by decree of the President of the Republic of 26 November 2007 n. 233
(The liturgical feast takes place on September 4th and is celebrated at the Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia on Monte Pellegrino in Palermo, where the Saint died in 1170 inside the cave). In the year 1624 the viceroy of Sicily, Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, resident in Palermo, brought a vessel from Tunis into the city port and was led by Mohammed Calavà, a Tunisian Moor, suspected of plague, containing innumerable gifts, rich and precious, and freed Christian slaves. Thus the disease spread among mice, in markets, in peripheral areas and finally in the city center. The population, tormented by the plague, continued to get sick and die and relied in vain on the holy protectors of the city and the four city districts: Saint Agatha, Saint Cristina, Saint Oliva and Saint Ninfa. (Saint Lucy was also the patron of the city, but she had not assigned any mandate). However, no miracle was obtained. Girolama La Gattuta, a Ciminnese woman 47 years old, an embroiderer, was ill with a strong malignant fever at the Great Hospital of Palermo. On October 15, 1623, while he was suffering, he "saw" a nun dressed in white who attracted lightning behind her. He touched her mouth and immediately felt "filled with water". It was Saint Rosalia, [2] who told the woman to go to Monte Pellegrino to fulfill a vow.
Girolama miraculously recovered after three days, but did not go to Monte Pellegrino and did not make his vow; thus he fell ill again with malaria. On 26 May 1624, Pentecost day, Girolama, an invalid, went up Monte Pellegrino together with her husband Benedetto Lo Gattuto, to his friend Vito Amodeo, a 37-year-old Trapani sailor, and his wife. The woman drank clear water that dripped from the rocky walls of a cave covered on the outside by vegetation and that was next to the ancient church of Santa Rosalia, and miraculously healed. At that moment she went to sleep and dreamed of the Madonna dressed in white, with the Baby Jesus in her arms and with a necklace of corals around her neck that told her to dig inside the cave where she would find "a saint, a treasure". At the bottom of the cave he saw a young woman dressed in a long tunic of arbraxo (old sack cloth) who, on her knees, prayed with the crown in her hand. Then he saw a large stone, and with great insistence, in the first days of June he began excavations. She led them, together with her husband, to the peasants of the surroundings and to the Franciscan monks of the nearby convent. Meanwhile the Senate, after the death of the viceroy Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy due to the plague on 3 August 1624, forbade the citizens to leave their homes and above all the city without their "bulletin", issued by the master notary. On 15 July 1624, at the point previously indicated by Girolama La Gattuta, the excavations ended and under a large slab of marble and very flat calcarenite, very white human bones were found (inserted in calcareous concretions). (At the beginning of the excavations in the cave they had found other dark colored bones, probably belonging to a secular friar and a novice, as well as goat bones). The white bones, due to their white color and the delicate dimensions of the skull, were absolutely defined as female bones, and emitted a very strong and pleasant perfume of flowers; moreover, according to the testimonies, written moreover, only one man was enough to lift the box with the bones inside because "they were very light". The bones were cleaned and taken to the chapel of the Archbishop's Palace, where the cardinal and archbishop of Palermo, Giannettino Doria resided, who after a view of the bones by the Jesuit medical anatomical Fathers, led by Father Giordano Cascini, who also wrote the first biography of Saint Rosalia collecting historical evidence and oral traditions handed down over time, which said that the bones belonged to a young woman, was convinced and decided to have the bones carried in procession through the streets of the city of Palermo, through the young Vincenzo Bonello. Here is the story. On February 13, 1625, Saint Rosalia appeared on Monte Pellegrino to a soap maker named Vincenzo Bonello (or Bonelli), who lived in the Monte di Pietà district, in Via Pannaria, who wanted to commit suicide due to the death of the young 15-year-old wife by plague. The saint stopped him from suicide and told him that only if his own remains had been carried in procession and the "Te Deum Laudamus" had been sung, would the plague be ended, as the Madonna had told her and promised. Vincenzo called his confessor (parish priest of the church of Sant'Ippolito Martire al Capo), as Saint Rosalia had told him, and told him everything he had seen. After three days, Vincenzo fell ill with the plague and died, since he had already received his miracle. The bishop, having well examined the bones of anatomini doctors, was informed that they were "women" and therefore, of Rosalia, the only woman living on Montepellegrino. On June 9, 1625 the archbishop of Palermo, Giannettino Doria, followed by all the clergy, the Palermo senate and some eminent citizens made a solemn procession through the streets of the city with the relics of the saint. At the passage of the relics, at the time of the Canto of the "Te Deum Laudamus", the contagion of the plague stopped (from that moment no new cases of plague were recorded) and people recovered from the disease. In addition, Saint Rosalia protects the city of Palermo from earthquakes, storms and storms, from which it has defended the city itself even in recent times.

I fulfilled my residency during the monsoon season, so I expected to get some weather. I wasn't disappoinged. This is Kachina Point behind the Painted Desert Inn. One of the best vista views in the park.
This image was shot during my tenure as resident artist in the "Artist in Residence" program at Petrified Forest National Park.
This fulfills the requirement for side lighting. My camera settings were 1.0 sec at f/16 and my ISO was at 100.
I took this photo early in the morning so the light was low and to the left of the creek.
In Photoshop, I adjusted the curve and contrast to darken the creek/rocks and give the photo more contrast. I also adjusted the saturation and vibration on the side of the creek to give it the photo the warmth of the lighting.
Something wonderful has happened….
I opened a window…it was (it still is) cloudy…and I saw…
I saw my apricot tree turning pink…his branches fulfilled with the littlest blossoms….
Extraordinary! I’m amazed on how much Nature is strong and even after the coldest and hardest winter ..she’s ready to amaze us… a strength that humans have not learned yet, neither aliens….
Does it look like a bit apocalypse now?
Have a nice day!
Having my breakfast calmly this morning, but very sad, these words clearly filled my mind… I rushed to my computer, to write them down, before they are gone with the wind :
“Returning to the Past as a detouched and poised spectator and NOT as an active protagonist , it might become particularly useful and constructive for you : because you can calmly and non-judgmentally watch your past errors , and the errors of others : in order not to reproduce them into your life.
But being in the Present and the Now, it is always the best choice : because you can fulfill your Task : to really learn to LOVE yourself AND your fellow human beings !! And you will then learn, that giving true Love, is the Real Thing!! And, even more essential than receiving Love from others!! “
(This is the letter I addressed today to my 2 older children, because all of us terribly suffer because of a recent loss ; each one of us, in his/her own way…. ***Concerning my butterfly, she was one of the flying residents of our summer house in Corfu…Some happy summers ago…)
Fulfilled a bucket list trip to St. Kilda, the remote archipelago of islands 45 miles out into the North Atlantic from the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The (very) rough sea crossing was more than worth it to see this spectacular location and ponder the harsh iives of the people who lived there.
Yesterday a small personal dream of mine came true: I got paid to take pictures of flowers.
Perhaps it sounds kind of glamorous. It wasn't. We were shooting orchids in a back-up greenhouse at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. The climate inside an orchid greenhouse is very friendly to orchids. It is very unfriendly to humans. I think it was about 175% humidity the whole time. I was sweating like a monster and looking very unprofessional.
Still, it was great fun and really fulfilling to spend the day this way. And I'm delighted to say that this opportunity came to me through contacts I made on Flickr. Three cheers for the world's best photo sharing site!
Days like this are rewarding to get cloud photos out and away from towns. The weather wasn't great for a lot of things but it was for photography.

Men in hunter-gatherer societies fulfilled their manly role by bringing back meat from the hunt. Today I got a taste of the pride my ancestors experienced after a successful hunt - by bringing back a package of toilet paper to end the tissue drought. I became, for a brief time, The Toilet Paper King.
My son looked out the window and saw a woman walking by with a package of toilet paper in her arms. We live in a rather safe neighborhood so she had not been mugged. Making a guess based on her direction of travel, I picked a target and hot-footed it to a local store. Bingo! Success. Limit of one package per customer (which would have been a good idea at the outset of the pandemic to deter hoarding).
When I returned home my wife said she should have put on the soundtrack from Chariots of Fire to celebrate my crossing the threshold.
We will continue to ration this precious find; after all, we have no idea how long it might be until the next shipment comes in.
On a more serious note: I realize that people are losing their lives, economies are being crushed, and citizens are divided on how this dreadful pandemic should be handled. In light of all that, a toilet paper shortage is a small inconvenience. Still, it has been totally unnecessary and it has added stress to an already awful situation.

"....… The work in the last days lays bare the work of Jehovah and Jesus and all mysteries not understood by man, so as to reveal the destination and the end of mankind and end all the work of salvation among mankind. This stage of work in the last days brings everything to a close. All mysteries not understood by man needs must be unraveled to allow man to plumb them to their depths and have a completely clear understanding in his heart. Only then can the human race be divided according to their kind. Only after the six-thousand-year plan of management is completed will man come to understand the disposition of God in its entirety, for His management will then have come to an end.
from “The Mystery of the Incarnation (4)” in The Word Appears in the Flesh

Eastern Lightning, The Church of Almighty God was created because of the appearance and work of Almighty God, the second coming of the Lord Jesus, Christ of the last days. It is made up of all those who accept Almighty God's work in the last days and are conquered and saved by His words. It was entirely founded by Almighty God personally and is led by Him as the Shepherd. It was definitely not created by a person. Christ is the truth, the way, and the life. God's sheep hear God's voice. As long as you read the words of Almighty God, you will see God has appeared.

I'm working on an anthology of classic, epic poetry, which begins with selections from Homer's Iliad and Odyssey! :) I've replaced the Roman names with the Greek names: "RAGE, Sing, O goddess, the rage of Achilles son of Peleus, that brought countless ills upon the Greeks. Many a brave soul did it send hurrying down to Hades, and many a hero did it yield a prey to dogs and vultures, for so were the counsels of Zeus fulfilled from the day on which the son of Atreus, king of men, and great Achilles, first fell out with one another."
All the best on your epic hero's odyssey into the art of photography!

My entry in Round 3 of the 2018 Bio-Cup, for the theme Anachronistic Future. Although far in the future, these robots embrace the chivalrous tradition of the past - if you've played Nier:Automata you might understand my inspiration for this one quite well. This is the biggest thing I've made and for something made in little more than 3 days after BrickFair Virginia I'm rather pleased with how it went, especially getting the legs to hold the rearing pose. Comments and criticism much enjoyed as always, enjoy!
I shot this lady and her husband at Haji Malang , they had come to fulfill their vow on completion of a wish..removal of hair and a few strands offered to the Holy Saint .. this is also known in Muslim parlance as completion of a Mannat.. the couple both Hindus from Andhra Pradesh .. devotees of the Holy Saint of Haji Malang a Shrine in the Malangad Mountains close to Kalyan..
Religious Tonsure
Tonsure is the practice of some Christian churches, mystics, Buddhist novices and monks, and some Hindu temples of cutting the hair from the scalp of clerics, devotees, or holy people as a symbol of their renunciation of worldly fashion and esteem.
The origin of the tonsure remains unclear, but it certainly was not widely known in antiquity. There were three forms of tonsure known in the 7th and 8th centuries:
* The Oriental, which claimed the authority of Saint Paul the Apostle (Acts 18:18) and consisted of shaving the whole head. This was observed in the Eastern churches, including the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Eastern Catholic Churches. Hence Theodore of Tarsus, who had acquired his learning in Byzantine Asia Minor and bore this tonsure, had to allow his hair to grow for four months before he could be tonsured after the Roman fashion, and then ordained Archbishop of Canterbury by Pope Vitalian in 668.
* The Celtic, the exact shape of which is unclear from the sources, but in some way involved shaving the head from ear to ear.[1] The shape may have been semicircular, arcing forward from a line between the ears, but another popular suggestion, less borne out in the sources, proposes that the entire forehead was shaved back to the ears.[2] More recently a triangular shape, with one point at the front of the head going back to a line between the ears, has been suggested.[1] The Celtic tonsure was worn in Ireland and Great Britain and was connected to the distinct set of practices known as Celtic Christianity.[3] It was greatly despised by those affiliated with the Roman custom, who considered it unorthodox and associated it with the heretic Simon Magus.[4]
* The Roman: this consisted of shaving only the top of the head, so as to allow the hair to grow in the form of a crown. This is claimed to have originated with Saint Peter, and was the practice of the Latin Rite Roman Catholic Church.
These claimed origins are possibly unhistorical; the earliest history of the tonsure is lost in obscurity. This practice is not improbably connected with the idea that long hair is the mark of a freeman, while the shaven head marks the slave (in the religious sense: a servant of God). Other theories are that the tonsure mimics male pattern baldness in an attempt to lend artificial respectability to men too young to display the real thing[citation needed], or that the tonsure is a ritual created by balding superiors in act of vanity and power over young non-bald subordinates.
Among the Germanic tribes, there appeared the custom that an unsuccessful pretender or a dethroned king would be tonsured. Then he had to retire to a monastery, but sometimes this lasted only until his hair grew back.[5]) The practice of tonsure, coupled with castration, was common for deposed emperors and his sons in Byzantium from around the 8th century, prior to which execution, usually by blinding, was the normal practice[6].

[edit] Christianity
[edit] Western Christianity
In the Latin or Western Rite of the Roman Catholic Church, "first tonsure" was, in medieval times, the rite of inducting someone into the clergy and qualifying him for the civil benefits then enjoyed by clerics. Tonsure was a prerequisite for receiving the minor and major orders. Failing to maintain tonsure was the equivalent of attempting to abandon one's clerical state, and in the 1917 Code of Canon Law, any cleric in minor orders (or simply tonsured) who did not resume the tonsure within a month after being warned by his Ordinary, lost the clerical state. Over time, the appearance of tonsure varied, ending up for non-monastic clergy as generally consisting of a symbolic cutting of a few tufts of hair at first tonsure in the Sign of the Cross and in wearing a bare spot on the back of the head which varied according to the degree of orders. It was not supposed to be less than the size of a communicant's host, even for a tonsuratus, someone simply tonsured, and the approximate size for a priest's tonsure was the size of a priest's host. Countries that were not Catholic had exceptions to this rule, especially in the English-speaking world. In England and America, for example, the bare spot was dispensed with, likely because of the persecutions that could arise from being a part of the Catholic clergy, but the ceremonious cutting of the hair in the first clerical tonsure was always required. In accordance with Pope Paul VI's motu proprio Ministeria quaedam of 15 August 1972, "first tonsure is no longer conferred". Since that time, however, certain institutes have been authorized to use the first clerical tonsure, such as the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (1988), the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest (1990), and the Personal Apostolic Administration of Saint John Mary Vianney, (2001).
Apart from this general clerical tonsure, some Western Rite monastic orders, for example Carthusians and Trappists, employed a very full version of tonsure, shaving the head entirely bald and keeping only a narrow ring of short hair, sometimes called "the monastic crown" (see "Roman tonsure", above), from the time of entrance into the monastic novitiate for all monks, whether destined for service as priests or brothers. Some monastic orders and individual monasteries still maintain the tradition of a monastic tonsure.
The fuller form of clerical tonsure led to the wearing of a skull cap in church to keep the head warm. This skull cap, called a zuchetto, is still worn by the Pope (in white), Cardinals (in red) and bishops (in purple) both during and outside of formal religious ceremonies. Priests may wear a simple black zuchetto, only outside of religious services, though this is almost never seen except as a practical garment used for warmth by some monks. Some priests who held special titles (certain ranks of monsignori and some canons, for instance) formerly wore black zuchettos with red or purple piping, but this too has fallen out of use except in a few, extremely rare cases.
[edit] Eastern Christianity
Today in Eastern Orthodoxy and in the Eastern Catholic Churches of Byzantine Rite, there are three types of tonsure: baptismal, monastic, and clerical. It always consists of the cutting of four locks of hair in a cruciform pattern: at the front of head as the celebrant says "In the Name of the Father", at the back of head at the words "and the Son", and on either side of the head at the words "and the Holy Spirit". In all cases, the hair is allowed to grow back; the tonsure as such is not adopted as a hairstyle.
Baptismal tonsure is performed during the rite of Holy Baptism as a first sacrificial offering by the newly baptized. This tonsure is always performed, whether the one being baptized is an infant or an adult.
Monastic tonsure (of which there are three grades: Rassophore, Stavrophore and the Great Schema), is the rite of initiation into the monastic state, symbolic of cutting off of self-will. Orthodox monks traditionally never cut their hair or beards after receiving the monastic tonsure as a sign of the consecration of their lives to God (reminiscent of the Vow of the Nazirite).
Clerical tonsure is the equivalent of the "first tonsure" in the Latin church. It is done immediately prior to ordination to the minor order of reader but is not repeated at subsequrent ordinations.[7] This led to a once common usage that one was, for instance, "tonsured a reader", although technically the tonsure occurs prior to the prayer of ordination within the ordination rite.
[edit] Buddhism
In Buddhism tonsure is a part of the rite of pabbajja and also a part of becoming a monk. This involves shaving head and face. This tonsure is renewed as often as required to keep the head cleanly shaven.
[edit] Hinduism
In Hinduism, the underlying concept is that hair is a symbolic offering to the gods, representing a real sacrifice of beauty, and in return, are given blessings in proportion to their sacrifice.
Hair cutting (Sanskrit cuda karma, cuda karana) is one of traditional saṃskāras performed for young children:
"According to the teaching of the revealed texts, the Kudakarman (tonsure) must be performed, for the sake of spiritual merit, by all twice-born men in the first or third year."[8]
In some traditions the head is shaven completely while in others a small tuft of hair called sikha is left.
In some South Indian temples like Tirumala, Palani and Tiruttani it is customary for pilgrims to shave their heads in or near the temple of the god they are visiting.
There has been an Indian custom to perform a tonsure on widows after their husbands' death. It is not uncommon to tonsure the head of a child after the death of a parent (usually father).
K. Jamanadas has argued that tonsure was originally a Buddhist costum and that Brahmanic practices always considered tonsure inauspicious.[9]
Tonsuring in the in the Hindu culture serves multiple purposes and is used as a symbol. One of Its most prominent purposes is to show ones love for the God by washing away their past and starting anew [10]. Moreover tonsuring can be used for punishment or to show that someone is an outcast in society because of the law they have broken . It is also used as a way to raise money for local synagogues which is where women across India become victims of the more powerful leaders .Firstly, the art of tonsuring originated before the Common Era . The original purpose for tonsuring was to show ones devotion to the Gods by shaving their heads clean, women included, and start their lives anew. By shaving their heads, it enabled these people to free themselves from their past sins and continue on with purer lives. However over the course of thousands of years, tonsuring has found new functions. Tonsuring can denote ones social class or personal standing. For example, someone with a closely shaven head is practicing celibacy . A social outcast will have a completely bald heads while men that are ardently religious will shave their heads only leaving a sihka 1.Seoncdly tonsuring can be used for punishing people for dastardly crimes. For example in mid June 2009, a Hindu woman was accused of killing her husband alongside her two sons. She was then beaten in public and shaven bald, which is also symbolic of social ostracizing [11]. There are many other cases of tonsuring being used for that purpose however when used for that, people are shaven clean leaving them completely bald. Punishment for women with tonsuring is more severe, sadly, than with men. This is due to the social injustices that women have to face within the Hindu culture. In the modern era, tonsuring has been used as a way of generating income for the Hindu community while unfortunately victimizing the female community. For example, the American hair industry uses the free trade process to make profit not only for them but the people of India . The free trade works as such: the American hair industry buys the hair materials directly from the Hindu populace to later use in their community; after generating an amount of income a percentage of it (usually more) is given back to the Hindu community[12]. This money is used by the Hindu people to fund the expansion of their synagogues and helping their community. Unfortunately, many Hindu women are forced to shave their heads against their will and face brutality from their community leaders. This has become a problem within this community and higher leaders are trying to find ways to solve the issue. Even so, it is a very gray area and it has proven to become hard to stop because it has moved to an “underground” state . Political leaders are not stopping and are still trying to find ways to prevent the persecution of their women by these community leaders.
[edit] Islam
It is a ritual for pilgrims on the event of Hajj to shave their heads before entering Mecca. Shaving off hair from the head was considered an ancient symbol of becoming a slave in Arabia and when a pilgrim shaves his head, he declares himself to be the slave of his Lord.[13]
Martin Luther held that the mark of the beast was the tonsured haircut worn by Roman Catholic clergy.[14]
Belle Reve Prison, 01:00 AM.
A Woman was walking down a corridor, to the Elevator. It was exactly 0100 AM. She stopped by the doors and pressed DOWN. Emediatly the Elevator came. She walked in and pressed -10. Slowly the Elevator went down. She had just gotten new orders from The White House. She was here to fulfill them. She was head of the Prison - Belle Reve - Where some of the most dangerous Criminals in the Country are held. She didn't exactly like the job, but neither did she hate it. Orders are oders. -7 and counting. After 3 minutes she arrived. She walked out of the elevator. She found herself in a small room, completly bland except for Cameras in every corner. She knew she was being scanned as she stood there. 10 seconds later part of the wall gave way. She walked toward it and found herself in another room, this one was different though, at the end was a Prison door, and beyond were 2 cells. Only 1 of them occupied. Beside the Prison door was a Fingerprint scanner and an eye scanner. She walked over to them and scanned her eye and fingers. On the screen, a green light came alid, and
Waller, Amanda.
Access....: GRANTED.
Was shown on the screen. The Prison Door opened. She walked over to the Cell which was occupied. In it was a bed, a toilet and a small wash bowl, along with 7 books lying on the floor. There was a Man in a Prison Jumpsuit lying on the Bed, sleeping. She looked back at the room she had just left. There was a Cell Control room on one side. In it were 2 Prison Guards, watching her every move. She nodded at one of them. He nodded back and suddently a light came alid in the Cell. It was very bright, and the man on the Bed put his hands over his eyes.
"Ugh, it can't already be morning, can it ?!" He said. He got up, only then seeing the Woman standing in front of his Cell.
"Do I know you ? You don't look like a Prison Guard at all."
"No. You don't know me. But I know you. Your name is Leonard Snart AKA Captain Cold. You were arrested for Bank Robbery 2 months ago."
"........ This is creepy. Who are you ?"
"My name is Amanda Waller."
"Okayyyyyyy... Is that supposed to mean something ? And what are you doing here anyway ?"
"1. I run this Prison. And 2. I am here beccause I belive you can be of service for me.
"Um.... WHAT ?"
"There are some things the Secret Service, and the Army can't do. For example: there are some countrys which do not like America. Frankly there are many. But most of them stay away from us. Then there are others who say they are friends, when really they believe we are tyrants who need to be stopped. And sadly sometimes they take measures which are, well... to blow America up. But the Army can't interfere with them, beccause that would cause an International outbreak, and other Countrys would rally against us, and next thing we know, we have Wolrd War III. That's why I'm here. I was tasked with bringing together a Team which will take care of these 'situations.' Task Force X."
"And you want me to be apart in it ?! Why not just take some Heroes who weren't allowed to join the 'Justice League' or something ?"
"That is the other reason Task Force X is being 'made'. To control Superheroes. While on the one side of the coin we have the Justice League 'protecting' people and what not, which is good. On the other, we have our nightmare scenario."
"Which is ?"
"That the Justice League will become mad with Power. And who is better to keep a SuperHero in check, than SuperVillain ?!"
"And...... You want me to be a member of this: 'Task Force X' ?!"
"Yes."
"Okayyyyyyy. What's in it for me ?"
"For one, after 50 Missions you will be set free."
"FIFTY MISSIONS ????? Are you Crazy ?!!?"
"No. I am not. But if that doesn't convince you how about this: If you'll join 'Task Force X' I promise you, Lisa will be taken care off."
"How the hell do you know of Lisa ??????"
"I have many Contacts and I know alot of things."
"So.... if I join this Task Force, you promise Lisa will be looked after ?"
"Yes. I am a Woman of my word."
"Alright then... I'll join, but only beccause Lisa needs it."
"Alright then. Mission briefing is tomorrow, 0500. You should get some sleep. It'll be an early start."
And with that the Light went off again and the Woman walked off in the other direction, toward another door at the end of the corridor. She once again had to scan her fingerprints and her eye until the door opened. She once again walked into a bland room with cameras and was once again scanned. After that she found herself in a Control Room once again, with a Cell Block behind a door. There were again only two Cells and only one of them was occupied. She walked through the door, into the corridor with the two Cells. The light went on again, and the man who was formerly sleeping rubbed his eyes as he got up.
"Ugh, so so bright! You got any foo---- wait a minute! You're a WOMAN! Now taht's somethin' new! I only get the same fat guy in here every freakin' day! A Woman..... Something else. Anyhoo, how can I be of service, Madam' ?"
His name is Digger Harkness AKA Captain Boomerang and he has been a Prisoner in Belle Reve for 3 years. Arrest for multiple murders and thefts.
"Funny you should say that, Harkness. I do actually need your, erm, 'service'."
"I know what this is about.... You want to meet Digger Harkness Jr. don't you ?!"
"No."
"Ye sure ??? I'm pretty sure he'd like to meet you...."
"Yes, I'm quite sure. My name is Amanda Waller and, as you put it: 'I require your services'."
"Riiiiiiiiiight. With what ?"
"I am putting together a Task Force, called Task Force X and I'd like you to be a member."
"Straightforward, aren't ya ?! I like that in a Woman...."
"......... "
"But whatev, sure I'll join your 'Task Force'."
"Just like that ? You don't even want to know the full backstory ?"
"I know your kind. You probally read my File 1000 times and now that, like you, I don't beat around the bush. But one thing I want to know: will there be anything in it for me ?"
"After 50 missions you get to leave the Task Force, and we will release you from Prison."
"That sounds fair. Alright, when's the first meeting ?"
".... Tomorrow. 0500."
"Alright, I'll see you there Amanda."
And with that he got back into his bed and the light went out. As Amanda Waller walked away she was suprised how quicky Harkness agreed. He was right, she did read his File alot of times, and it numerously explained he was reckless. Still, she made a Mental Note to herself to keep an eye one him. As she walked through another bland room with Cameras and into another Control Room. She got serious. This one wasn't going to be an easy one. But it would still be easier than the last one. She once again found herself in a small Cell block with two cells (one of them occupied). The Light went on again, and the man lying on the bed woke up again, and not very happy.
"What the---- Oh. Amanda Waller, havn't seen you in a while."
"Hello, Floyd."
"What do you want ?"
"I am putting together a team--"
"Like your old one ?! And lemme guess, you want me to join ?! Sorry, Waller. But I ain't joining your 'hell squad' I remember what I got for joining your squad last time."
"Don't worry, Floyd. This squad is different."
"Really ? Convince me."
"Well for starters you won't be fighting Aliens but Terriosts and possibly Superheroes."
" ' Fighting Superheroes' ?! What ?!
"Task Force X is the name of the squad, and it was made to take care of 'problems' the Goverment can't take care of."
"So Illegal stuff ?! Okay, what about the Fighting Superheroes thing ?"
"That is the other reason this Squad exists. Should Superheroes ever go rogue, we, by which I mean the goverment, are gonna need a response team."
"And you want me on that team ? I don't know if I'm gonna be able to hold my ground against Superman or Wonder Woman. Aquaman, yeah, but not those guys."
"As far as I can remember you held your ground pretty good against that Alien, and I heard you took on Batman at one point ?!"
"Heh, that's kinda true. But I still don't see a reason why I should join your squad. There any Money in it for me ?"
"Better. I will make it my personal matter that your, er, friend, is taking care of. 24/7 security. I will also make sure she has enough food, water and supplies to get through her.... training."
"TRAINING ? You call that TRAINING ?! It's torture, that's what it is."
"Call it what it is, I can gurantee no harm will be done to her."
"....If I join your Squad that is ?!"
"Yes. And after about 50 missions, you will be let free."
"So you're saying that if I don't join your squad, Lizzy will most likely diee ?! That's Blackmail."
"I like to call it negotiation."
".................................."
"So what do you say ?"
"Fine. I'll join your goddamn squad, but only 50 missions, then I'm out."
"50 Missions, you have my word. Mission Briefing is at 0500, make sure you're on time."
And with that the lights went out again and Amanda Waller walked off. She once again walked into a bland room, but instead of another control room, there was an elevator door. The elevator doors opened as she walked towards them. She pressed -15 and emediatly the doors closed and the elevator went down. 5 Minutes later the doors opened again and she found herself in another bland room. But here Security was higher than in the others. There were Metal detectors, infra red vision build into the walls and more Cameras than before. After about 1 or 2 minutes, she was allowed to pass. She knew why there was so much Security going on. She was the one saying there should be extra security with this Prisoner. When she was allowed to pass she found herself in another Control room, but instead of 3 guards there were 8. And in the next room there was only one Cell. Next to the door to the cell block there were again fingerprint and eye scanners, but this time scanners for all of the fingers. You can never have enough Security with this man. He broke into the White House at one point. As she walked into the room with the Cell, she saw the light was already on, and the man inside was up, and not sleepy at all. His jumpsuit jacket and shirt were lying on the floor, and he was in the middle of the Cell, doing push ups.
"95...96....97...98....99...and 100."
He got up and picked his clothes up, never once looking behind at the visitor he had.
"Hi there Amanda. Hope you weren't trying to scare me. Even if all of your doors in here are super silent and you still walk like a Ghost, I cna still here you coming from a mile away."
As he finished talking he turned around. His right eye was missing, and he was still shirtless. His torso was very muscular, and Waller had read in his File that he made 500 push ups a day. Every time 100 push-ups.
His name is Slade Wilson, AKA Deathstroke, Master Assasin and Master in various Martial Arts.
Is said to be the best Assassin in the world.
"I see your hearing hasn't gotten bad or anything."
"Heh, you should know better Amanda. I may be getting a little old, but that doesn't mean I'm out of the bussiness."
"Oh I know, Slade. I've been keeping up with what you've been doing over the last couple of years. I must say I am impressed. You broke into the White House, yet did not kill slash kidnapp the President. Why ?"
"Heh, that's Classified, Amanda. But you've been busy as well, havn't you Amanda ?! Imployed by the Goverment.... again. Running this lovely Prison as well. I'm impressed as well."
"Yes, I have been busy. Running a Prison isn't as easy as you might think."
"What, you mean with all the breakouts lately ?!"
"Hm, what do you mean ?"
"Oh please. Just beccause the Newspapers havn't gotten the news yet doesn't mean I havn't. You know me, I have my contacts."
"...And I have mine. You've been in here for about a Year now, and I know you, so you've probally already found 10 different ways to get out of here, knowing you. Why still here ?"
"Eh, I don't really see a reason why. Starting to get a little bit bored of doing Assassin stuff I guess."
"I'm pretty sure you have enough Money to start a new life. Why not break out of here and start a new one in Hawaii or something ?"
"Not the worst of ideas. Maybe spend a few years on an Island, isolated from everyone else or so. Sounds temting, but I guess that could get boring as well."
"Well, luckily for you, I have a solution. I'm putting together a Task Force--"
"Like your Alien Hunter Squad ? Heh, that was fun, but if this Squad is like that one, I'll pass. Lost an Eye in that last Misson, remember?!"
"Yes I do remember but no. This Task Force is different. For starters this was actually approved by the Goverment, and it's main opjective is to take care of stuff the, uh, 'Goverment' can't take care of without the risk of World War III breaking out."
"Doesn't sound too interesting. Although the part with the 'Making Sure Superheroes Don't Go Out Of Line' sounds interesting"
"...... When did I mention that ?"
"Hah, told you, I have my Contacts and you have yours. Speaking off that, is Hector the snitch or Michael ? Nevermind, probally both of them are."
"So, you in or not ?"
"Hm, I think I'll pass. Temting though."
"I don't think I have ot tell you it took me a while to convince them to take you in this squad."
"Trust me I know. But still, while I would like to take on Batman, and maybe Superman or Wonder Woman, I still think I would pass on this one. Besides how many Missions would I have to do ? 49 ?"
"50 actually. Your Contact let you down there. Still I am impressed how much you know. So you sure, Slade ?"
"I am pretty sure. But just out of interest, who else is a member ?"
"Heh, I am temted to tell you taht's Classified, but then I remember you'd probally know in 24 hours. So far I have recruited: Captain Cold, Captain Boomerang and Deadshot."
"Floyd, huh ? Guess it took a little to convince him, huh ?"
"At first, but when I brought up Lizzy, he agreed pretty quick."
"Ah! Of course, her. Couldn't wait to play your trumpcard, huh ?! Well I'll tell you what, I'll join your 'Suicide Squad' but under two conditions: 1. When I finish your 50 something missions, I get 50,000 Dollars, CASH. Y'know, Insurance Money. And 2. Should the chance ever come up to fight Batman, Flash or Green Lantern, I get first crack at 'em. Deal ?"
Amanda took a moment to wager the offer until she replied:
"Deal. We have a Mission Briefing at 0500."
"One final thing. Who's leading this Squad or Task Force ?"
"....Steve."
"Okay, I can live with that."
Yes, but I wonder if he can. Amanda thought.
"I'll see you tomorrow. Get some sleep.... You'll need it."
And with she walked off. One hour and Thirty minutes had passed since she first stepped into the first elevator.

Homer's Iliad: Sing, O goddess, the anger of Achilles son of Peleus, that brought countless ills upon the Achaeans. Many a brave soul did it send hurrying down to Hades, and many a hero did it yield a prey to dogs and vultures, for so were the counsels of Jove fulfilled from the day on which the son of Atreus, king of men, and great Achilles, first fell out with one another.
Try #3-
Fulfilling the needs of the American and British automatic riflemen, Sweetwater's Kodiak™ light machine is on the top tier of infantry automatic weapons. The Kodiak was designed and tested to surpass the needs and replace the FN 249 SAW; The Kodiak beats the 249 in almost ever needed criteria -Kodiak weighs 12 and half pounds unloaded, features a simple gas tappet system, is capable of changing to .300BLK and 6.8SPC with barrel removal, is more versatile and is cheaper to produce. The Kodiak standard fire rate is less than the 249's at about 850 ROF and has its barrel chrome-lined for accuracy and flutted for reduced weight. The extractor geometry is designed to keep hot brass away from the shooter's arm and reduce extractor wear. The US Army's 173rd Airborne Combat Brigade tested the Kodiak while on a 1-year deployment and reported that the weapon system sustained zero jams while in the field, was easier to carry and shoot, required little maintenance, and didn't overheat as quickly as the 249.

Recently fulfilled a long-term goal to visit Chicago for the first time, in search of some great skyline pics. Unfortunately weather was not ideal, but I did come away with enough good shots to make it worthwhile. Besides, plans are in motion to build like another 5 50+ story skyscrapers within the next three years, so I'll just have to make a second trip :)
BTW, I'm really liking the (5th) "new" flickr redesign - I think they may have finally gotten it right!

The Blue Fairy is the magical being in Disney's Pinocchio. Fulfilling Geppetto's wish, she transforms Pinocchio (Hamilton Luske, Ben Sharpsteen, 1940) into a living being and later into a real boy. She also aids Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket throughout their adventures, both directly and from afar. As one of only two female characters in the film (the other being Cleo), she is the most powerful character in the cast. The Blue Fairy initially grants Pinocchio life and who ultimately decides whether or not he should become a real boy.
The wishing star is first referred to in the film's opening song (with the Blue Fairy herself perhaps referred to in the song as "Fate herself"). When Jiminy Cricket begins his story, the wishing star is looking over Pinocchio's village, and it and the other stars are 'shining like diamonds'. It is not mentioned again in the film until inside Geppetto's Workshop. After Figaro has opened the window, Geppetto notices the Wishing Star and wishes that the marionette Pinocchio becomes a real boy. Everyone in the workshop falls asleep; soon, however, Jiminy is woken by an ethereal glow caused by the star as it moves closer and closer to the window. Eventually, the Blue Fairy herself appears in the workshop, stating that Geppetto deserves his wish after the happiness he has brought to others. She walks to Pinocchio and, tapping the puppet with her wand, grants him life but his body is still made of wood. She tells him that he must learn the difference between right and wrong in order to become a real boy. When Pinocchio appears not to understand, Jiminy interrupts to explain, and the Blue Fairy offers him the position of conscience to Pinocchio. Somewhat dumbstruck by her beauty, he agrees and is granted a new suit befitting his status. The Blue Fairy then leaves, reminding Pinocchio to "be a good boy, and always let your conscience be your guide."
The Blue Fairy next appears after Stromboli has locked Pinocchio in a cage; the showman intends to use the wooden boy to make an enormous amount of money. Ashamed of doing the wrong thing, Pinocchio attempts to hide when he sees the wishing star approaching the caravan, though both he and Jiminy are spotted. The Blue Fairy asks Pinocchio why he did not attend a school that day; lying, he concocts a ridiculous story that he was kidnapped by two monsters, who put him into a sack and threatened to chop him into firewood. As his lie grows, his nose becomes longer until it resembles a tree limb, complete with a bird's nest. The Blue Fairy informs him that "a lie keeps growing and growing until it's as plain as the nose on your face". When Pinocchio promises to tell the truth from then on, the Blue Fairy returns his nose to normal and frees him from the cage with a tap of her wand. She does not appear in person for the rest of the film - in keeping with her 'warning' as she frees Pinocchio from the cage that this is the last time she can help him - although she offers some indirect assistance. When Pinocchio is on Pleasure Island, while other boys were being turned into donkeys and then sold to salt mines by the Coachman, Jiminy warns Pinocchio to follow his lead to prevent the curse from taking a foothold, with his role as the Fairy's proxy allowing Pinocchio to escape his own transformation.
After the two return home and see Geppetto's abandoned workshop, the Blue Fairy, in the form of a dove, drops a message that Geppetto learned about Pleasure Island and set sail in order to rescue Pinocchio, but his boat was swallowed by Monstro the Whale. Presumably, this "bonus help" was due to the fact that Pinocchio had gotten back on track by listening to Jiminy (as well as ceasing his bad-boy behavior unlike Lampwick) and that Jiminy would not have realized that Geppetto had been attacked by Monstro as they were making their way back to the village. Pinocchio's dangerous decision to try and rescue Geppetto (even over Jiminy's objections) was the final test in order to see whether or not he had what it takes to become a real boy. Pinocchio's selflessness in rescuing Geppetto from Monstro costs him his life, as he is injured from the violent wave that washed him and Geppetto onshore. As Geppetto, Jiminy, Figaro, and Cleo mourn Pinocchio's death, the Blue Fairy appears, saying that Pinocchio has proven his heroism and rewards him by returning him to life, reversing the Coachman's donkey curse, and ultimately changing him into a real human boy. She also gives Jiminy a golden badge, declaring him Pinocchio's official conscience.

Their illicit pleasure has been fulfilled.
They get up and dress quickly, without a word.
They come out of the house separately, furtively;
and as they move along the street a bit unsettled,
it seems they sense that something about them betrays
what kind of bed they’ve just been lying on.
But what profit for the life of the artist:
tomorrow, the day after, or years later, he’ll give voice
to the strong lines that had their beginning here.

I nearly fulfilled the retro challenge I'd set for the members of the 'Theme of The Day' group - "in one day you're only allowed to take one shot and that is your image for the day"... Allowing yourself just one shot really focusses the mind!!!
and for 45 minutes this was going to be my only shot of the day,
but!!!!
We were at the Devon Country Fayre for the English National Sheepdog Trials
and I succumbed and took a few more ;o)
George Pile, a young local falconer, gave a superb and incredibly informative display with his fabulous birds - more of them over at ipernity!
(as the background is 2/3rds black I'm including it in the black challenge for ODC, fair amount of black in those feathers too ;o)
Yes, its my poor little miniskirt! Its role fulfilled, it's now relegated being just an afterthought! It had wonderfully hot time while it was the focus of your attention though! Now your focus is on the rest of me! [giggle!]
I think I've teased you enough! Now enjoy the view!
