Vectora is the corporate font for SML Universe. SML picked it mostly for his love for Adrian Frutiger. Another criteria which makes Vectora special is that Frutiger designed it after realizing that there was a need for sans serif type that could be read easily at small sizes, which in many ways make it ideal for designers who love setting tiny type. Yet more of importance to SML, is that it is not a very popular font, as such the typography set by SML would not look like everyone else’s, yet its character has all the sweetness seen in other more popular Frutiger fonts such as of course the Frutiger and Avenir family. The only unfortunate thing with using a not-so-popular font is that it does not have the niceties which SML cares about, such as real small caps and figure numerals (aka x-height numerals). So SML is considering drawing his own some time soon unless of course Linotype would be so kind to consider creating Vectora Next or equivalent.

This copy is in very poor condition but I grabbed it anyway because I hadn’t seen it before and it may be the Composer’s first type specimen. Der Blausee ist trotz seiner geringen Grösse von 0.64 ha einer der bekanntesten Bergseen
der Schweiz. Er ist ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel im Berner Oberland im Kanton Bern in der
Schweiz. Er liegt nahe Mitholz auf dem Gebiet der Gemeinde Kandergrund.

Der Blausee liegt auf 887 m im Kandertal südlich des D.orfes Kandergrund direkt neben
dem F.luss K.ander. Man erreicht ihn über die B.ahnhöfe von F.rutigen oder K.andersteg,
von welchen ein B.us zum Blausee fährt. Für Automobilisten stehen grosse Parkplätze
zur Verfügung.

Geschichte

Der Blausee entstand vor über 15'000 Jahren durch einen Felssturz, in dessen Trümmern
der See heute liegt. Als der Zürcher Kaufmann Johann Leemann - Boller als Tourist das
Kandertal durchstreifte, stiess er auf das Gebiet um den Blausee.
1878 kaufte er See und Land dem Frutiger Wirt Johann Reichen - Bhend ab. Mit der Er-
schliessung des Tales durch die L.ötschbergbahn und dem Ausbau der S.trasse erlebte
die ganze Region einen Aufschwung.
Der Fremdenverkehr nahm stark zu und der Blausee wurde schnell ein beliebter Anzieh-
ungspunkt für Touristen. Ein Hotel wurde gebaut und eine F.ischzuchtanstalt eingerichtet.
Hotel und Restaurant sind auch im W.inter geöffnet. In einer kleinen Ausstellung wird die
Geschichte des Blausees dargestellt.
Karl Baedeker schreibt 1869 in seinem Reiseführer «Die Schweiz»: …etwas rechts im
T.annenwald versteckt liegt der kleine blaue See, merkwürdig durch seine tiefblaue Farbe.
1885 schreib er in einer neuen Auflage: … führt ein Weg an den blauen See ( nicht zu
versäumen), merkwürdig durch sein blaues Farbenspiel und seine malerisch mit Tannen
und Felsen bewaldetet Umgebung.
Johann Jakob von Tschudi erwähnt 1885 den Blausee als landschaftliches Kleinod von
zauberhafter Waldeinsamkeit sowie die gemütliche kleine Pension.

Der Blausee liegt in einem 20 Hektar grossen bewaldeten Naturpark mit Spazierwegen,
Picknickplätzen und Feuerstellen. Weil der See aus unterirdischen Quellen gespeist wird,
ist das Wasser glasklar. Die bis zu 12 m unter Wasser liegenden Baumstämme und
Felsen scheinen gleich unter der Oberfläche zu liegen.
Da das Wasser langwelliges ( rotes ) Licht stärker absorbiert als kurzwelliges ( blaues )
Licht, erscheint es tief blau und blaugrün. Gemäss einer Sage stammt die blaue Farbe
von den blauen Augen eines jungen Mädchens, das aus Trauer über den Tod ihres
Geliebten ins Wasser ging. Seither trage der See als Erinnerung an die Unglückliche
die blaue Farbe. An die Sage erinnert auch die Statue im See des Glattfelder Künstlers
Raffael Fuchs aus dem Jahr 1998.

The Centraal Station in Amsterdam had their name plate in Univers. The NS (Dutch Railways) switched to Frutiger some 25 years ago. The new name will be in Frutiger.
The Dutch railway operator 'Nederlandse Spoorwegen' uses Frutiger as their house style font. In the past they used Univers. I reported earlier that there are 'Univers trains' and 'Frutiger trains.' Some old Univers trains were damaged, repainted and restickered with Frutiger signs. This train does have both Univers and Frutiger figures!

The nameplate from 47790 pictured at Holyhead on Wednesday 13th November 2002. The locomotive was named thus at Swansea High Street station on 1st March 1995 (St. David's day) by Dr. Glyn Williams, Managing Director of BR Freight Group. The name was previously carried by 47600 from July 1985 to May 1991 but in the case of 47790 new plates were cast using the Res 'Frutiger' font.
The loco carried the name until it was repainted into EWS colours as part of its B17 exam at Toton TMD in January 2003. One of these plates was at one point on display in the Otley Arms pub in Trefforest.
Main locations such as check-in, terminals and gates are in the sans serif typeface Univers, secondary locations such as toilets, restaurants, café’s are in the serif typeface Sabon.
Switz-Frutiger AG, Thun, Furka base tunnel renovation Tmf 2/2 103-105 EVNs 90 85 829 0103-3, 90 85 829 0104-1, 90 85 829 0105-8. Renovation project is on hold.
Tractors owned by Frutiger AG, to be used for refurbishment work in Furka tunnel.
