I was asked to take some pictures for a good friend who runs an Osteopathic Clinic in Highgate, London. They specialise in Frozen Shoulders and have an excellent reputation and plenty of celebs who frequent them including Ali G, innit!
This was 2nd serious portrait photography session and one that I kind of had an idea of what to do.
I used 2 off camera strobes, one with a white umbrella and one silver. I used the white one as the key light usually just to the side of the camera mainly around 1/16 power to help fill in the natural light from the window and the silver one as a high fill light. But then again I was just guessing most of the time.
It was a difficult job to get exposures right with the practitioners constantly moving around the patient so I tried not to move the lighting rigs too much so that explains some of the dark shadows when the subjects were hunched over. Also the white coats made exposure a bit of a nightmare.
My technique was to set the camera to manual. I'd use a 50mm 1.4 for the close up full framed pics using the lenses great DOF to get some interesting shots,. Then the 17-40 F4 for a wider more general shot. With the camera set to manual ISO 100, shutter between 1/80 to 1/250 and aperture around F1.8 to F4 I was getting if fairly close most of the time. I huge learning curve.
This series are just a selection of over 300 pictures I took. The day was really enjoyable but pretty stressful as I felt I was guessing most of the time.
I have decided to go on a Strobe one day Course. The Adam Duckworth training courses look good and I might try and get to one sooner rather than later.
Any feedback and suggestions on improvement would appreciated.

start of month 4. just starting to get some strength back. adhesive capsulitis / frozen shoulder is no fun. down over 10kg since this started....
still a long way to go, but on the bright side, thanks to Ashwin Rao this long, grinding process has been accelerated quite a bit. :)

Since the beginning of the year, I've been dealing with a condition called frozen shoulder. Despite its name, it is not cool. It's quite painful, but now that I'm not traveling this month, I can finally begin the therapy that I've had to ignore for so many months.
I finally decided to photograph it - my way.
This is the best I could manage in the way of a thumbs up after a nerve block in outpatient surgery (9 hours after surgery). I still only have the use of one arm.
