Ville Valo, the charismatic founder and frontman of the metal band HIM, Finland's most important contemporary cultural export. Their music can be considered a blend of literary influences from romantism, symbolism (Baudelaire) and shakespearian tragedies and the bittersweet scandinavian melancholy at its best. While the early albums are true masterpieces, the latest were conceived to draw in an even larger fanbase.
HIM is an excellent live band, but the show in Sibiu was a bit disappointing knowing what are they really capable of.

For challenge two, I'm taking on "90's Grunge Glamour" with an eccentric and artistic vibe, celebrating the early '90s culture by paying homage to the original Lollapalooza, Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell's raucous celebration of alternative rock, hip-hop and industrial music.
Never one to leave my own culture, interests, and personality behind, I'm adorning my own hand-crafted paper earrings with Asian prints, which fits well with the personal memorabilia and trinkets often seen in neo-bohemian grunge fashion. The earrings accentuate the main color scheme of this attire with hues of red and black, with some blue and turquoise highlights seen in different corners of the ensemble from my lips to my fingertips. The rest of my trinkets embellish the arms and body, matching and yet mismatching in the purposeful cacophony of the era.
The beanie was inspired by guitarist Jerry Cantrell's as seen in the iconic Alice in Chain's "Would?" video. The lacy black top and the flower sunglasses celebrate the gothic touch of Siouxie Sioux and the shoegaze chic of Lush's Miki Berenyi, while the pattern of the comfy pant skirt suggests the album art of British industrial rockers Nitzer Ebb. Of course, in addition to all this, I have tied a plaid shirt around my waist, that most iconic of grunge accessories made famous by bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam. My sturdy wingtip boots are not only representative of grunge's roots in the Pacific Northwest, but are durable enough for a full day of moshing to my favorite "riot grrrl" bands.

I wanted to emphasize urban culture with bright and colorful city lights. The set was actually completely hand-built from the walls to the railing. I used about 3 lights total but superimposed shots from various lighting angles and colors. To create the reflections on the floor, I used the background, flipped it, blurred it out, and then overlapped it with the shadows of the original photo to give it that colorful illusion of lights.

Australian music legend and Rose Tattoo frontman Gary 'Angry' Anderson with guitarist entertaining the crowd at the Burwood Festival in Sydney (Black&White).
Here's one of Slipknot frontman #8, AKA Corey Taylor, photographed at Mayhem Fest.
Even though I don't listen to this type of music, this festival was a blast to photograph. I think I lost a 4gb Sandisk Extreme IV card somewhere at the amphitheater (it was blank), but I can't feel too bad with the haul of images I made.
I give Mayhem Festival two thumbs up.
