Wishing you all a bright and peaceful new year full of love, friendships, adventure and discoveries!
(Uttakliev beach in Lofoten Islands, Norway, Summer 2022)
It's a new dawn, it's a new day ...
Frohes Neues Jahr! Happy New Year!
May your year be filled with happiness and health, fortune and friendship, adventures and an abundance of magical moments ☀️
Whether you believe in fate or not sometimes it is out of our control. Some paths are meant to cross while others never do.
This happens to be one of those extremely rare moments where paths crossed and the passion of two have begun a new adventure.

After a long time away, we finally returned to Sheridan - a place where Native Americans gather to greet old friends and watch the landscape dressed in its autumn colors. We ran around, playing and laughing until we both flopped down in a big pile of freshly raked leaves. Sammy then began licking my face, showering me with his love. It was a beautiful morning, and we enjoyed every moment of it.

Jerry took us up to Sepulveda Dam to find the Glossy Ibis. And we found him! Not even hard. But he was a ways away. And the mid day sun was doing us no favors. Here is W9 with her eyes on the prize... photobombed by this cute Egyptian Goose.
We get off the Amtrak for stop two on our "meeting flickr folks" trip. We’ve just left New York City and are in Providence, Rhode Island.
I am lugging the big red suitcase with Sheree’s anvil collection as well as a backpack and a rolling suitcase.
I manage to get the whole mess onto an escalator without looking too much like a geek. And as we get to the Arrivals area, a smiling man is pointing a camera our way.
The air is suddenly cut by the high-pitched sounds females make when they recognize each other. Sheree and Gina rush into each others arms. They have never met in person before…but they are immediately and resolutely best friends.
I exchange smiles with Brian, Gina’s husband. We smile because we know that our women are happy and are going to stay happy as long as they are together.
Over the next few days we got to know Brian and Gina well. We went to antique stores, graveyards, seashores, lighthouses, restaurants.
One day when the rain wouldn’t quit, Gina and Sheree decided all four of us wanted to see Meryl Streep playing Julia Child. Brian and I shrugged and went.
Sheree and Gina both fell asleep and left Brian and me suffering through what was rapidly defining itself as a seriously crappy chick movie.
It was like being with family. Last night Brian’s mother hosted a huge family celebration of Gina and Sheree’s birthdays (which occur within just a few days of each other) and there was laughter and good food.
I’d like to tell you a little about Gina and Brian. But it’s difficult for a couple of reasons.
First: I have promised not to post their faces.
Second: it is impossible to talk about Brian without mentioning Gina…or to talk about Gina without talking about Brian.
This is a couple that laughs together, still holds hands after three decades of being together, have endured illness and pain and are still completely into each other.
Brian doesn’t take pictures. Gina does. But Brian drives her everywhere she needs to go. He carries her camera bag and he has a never ending supply of wry and really funny observations that lead you to the inevitable conclusion that this world would be a much better place if people just had the good sense to declare him King.
Brian drives us around. He’s not a photographer. But he understands us. He knows that when the people in the back seat start gibbering and making inarticulate excited noises and pointing out the window that we have seen a photo opportunity and would like him to pull over, please. Right fricking now. He always does.
Gina takes the kind of pictures that make you go “oooooo.” They are a great team.
So here they are: doing what they do. Brian is drawing Gina’s attention to something, standing close and probably saying something that makes her laugh or roll her eyes.
This image is a simple thank you, Brian and Gina. Sheree and I enjoyed meeting and having you share your home and your hearts with us.
Thank you.

I had some doubts but off we went. A rare bird was spotted on the beach between LAX airport and the ocean. I have driven by, biked through, and rollerbladed this beach for years.
Were it not for encouragement from Alejandra and Manuel, we would have passed.
The beach was deserted and desolate. Bending palm trees showed the strength of the wind. Only the few and the brave were using the bike path.
We love birdwatching but things like biting insects and wind can be a deal breaker.
We parked. Thankfully, the fee is only $3 this day.
I have my gear; locked and loaded. I plan to keep the lens cap on until I have something to actually photograph. I set up my camp stool and try to use the car as a wind block. W9 is geared up and so we decide to set off trudging north. I can feel the torque on my ankles and knees in the soft sand. My thoughts are scattered. What if we don't find the bird? Big gusts of wind catch my jacket like a sail. How am I going to get up if the wind blows me down?
Come all ye young fellows that follows the sea
To me, way hey, blow the man down
Now please pay attention and listen to me
Give me some time to blow the man down
I've tightened the tie on my hat. Sand is blowing and our footsteps are covered almost instantly. We've been walking for 5 minutes though it feels like hours. A few minutes more and we can see the low barrier that provides protection for a Snowy Plover colony. We get a little closer. I'm less worried about being tipped over but now the wind is making my eyes water. There is a loose strap on my gear and the wind is using it to smack me and it hurts.
W9 says "I see him." Do I hate that W9 always hears and sees birds I can't? No, honestly I don't. I'm grateful.
We move in closer and it looks like some white feathers are being blown about the beach. As my eyes adjust I can see the tiny bodies of the cute Snowy Plovers. They seem to be playing a version of "musical chairs." We can see our target bird. He's a handsome chunk of a guy. The snowy minions are in a semicircle around him. The entire gang is outside the protective barrier.
We move carefully and slowly. If the Snowy Plovers get up from their sand niches we know we are too close. Meanwhile jets are screaming overhead but the birds don’t seem to mind.
We set up our camp stools and remove our lens caps. The Pacific Golden Chunk is sleeping. He's on one foot has his face tucked comfortably under his wing.
I wanted a sunshiny day. I wanted to lie down on the sand and crawl as close as I could to get an outstanding shot.
The light wasn't bad but the wind was whipping up a sandstorm. The fantasy of crawling on the beach was insane.
My spirits were lifted. It was a good day. Perhaps this rare bird has decided to winter over in Southern California so maybe we’ll get another chance to see him …hope so.
*Midnight's Quiet Embrace* by hab
In the quiet embrace of midnight's glow,
A new year dawns, a chance to sow.
A canvas blank, untouched, and wide,
A symphony of dreams, on which we'll ride.
With each chime, a tale unwinds,
Opportunities bloom in limitless kinds.
The past, a story in fading ink,
The future's melody, a fresh start to think.
Oh, the horizon stretches far and free,
A realm of promise, a vast, open sea.
New chances dance on the morning's breeze,
As whispers of change rustle through the trees.
In the tapestry of time, we weave our fate,
A chance to create, to reinvent, to celebrate.
Resolutions echo, bold and clear,
A roadmap to dreams, drawing near.
As the sun ascends with hues so bright,
Illuminating paths, banishing the night.
The year unfolds, a script untold,
With chapters of silver and moments of gold.
Embrace the unknown, with courage and grace,
Navigate challenges, quicken the pace.
For in every sunrise, hope takes flight,
A beacon guiding through day and night.
Let laughter be the rhythm, and joy the rhyme,
As we dance through the sands of fleeting time.
New friendships, adventures, and lessons untold,
In this year of stories, yet to unfold.
So here's to the journey, the thrill, the chase,
To each sunrise, a warm embrace.
May the canvas of the year be painted in glee,
With new opportunities as far as the eye can see.

RETO ultra wide & slim
kodak vision3 250D
Maybe this is a good moment to write a few words about the RETO Ultra Wide & Slim. I bought this camera especially to use it on bicycle trips, after my Fuji Tiara Zoom died. It fulfilled all my expactations. It is VERY light and compact and that is important for bikepacking. It has no settings so it can be shot easily with one hand and while riding. It is cheap so it wouldn't be a big loss should it get damaged or destroyed. Last but not least, while I am normally not into the lo-fi aesthetics, I do like it for this kind of shooting. Bicycle adventures are like dreams for me, time outside time, unreal. I want to remember them like dreams, and photos ultimately shape our memories. Oh, and this camera makes selfies like this possible ;)
January. The Holidays are over. We did a lot of moving without going anywhere. We packed up everything and moved it into storage so that our squeaky floors could be un-squeaked for our new (and very nice) downstairs neighbor. We stayed at “Camp David” ( thanks, Dave!) No computer. Limited outings. Cloudy skies. RAIN. This will be an unforgettable January.
W9 and I did our best to find the Goldeneye in Ballona. We scored the sweet faced Mew Gull (top left) instead. We galumphed around Madrona Marsh and received a tip: Eurasian Wigeon (middle-ish in the collage with a bunch of ducks) floating on the newly wet again marsh. We were shoulder to shoulder with the spectrum of birders/twitchers/photographers. All geeks of a feather and we were flocking together.
OK. I went a little nuts with the “vivid”setting on the camera. The Fox Sparrow ( 4th photo on left side) has never appeared so colorful. Trickery. But Nat Geo approved.
Frau Bee (bottom row) is making her way to the top of the Overlook where she would see Los Angeles with snowcapped mountains in the background.
January has been a little cold and cloudy. A bit stressful. A lot stressful. Flip that card over and you get friendship …camaraderie…. adventure…discovery…an early Spring Cleaning?
Thank you, my flickr friends. Your photos spark ideas and inspiration. Thank you for taking the time to view, comment, and fav my photos too.

ps- this is a major crop, so the quality is not the best, but all it couts for me is the moment.. And I really like it :)
Indian children LOVE to be in front of the camera....
It was a REAL problem to make some photos.. but so funny at the same time :)))
In this particular one, I was trying to keep those two away from the stairs, but it was almost impossible!
ehehe
I'll crop them one day... couldn't do it this time!
Hummmm... look at this oldie!

An amazing place despite all the strange foam floating on the lake... Udaipur is a noisy place just like any other Indian City.. all the tuk tuks , bikes, cars and screaming sellers, life is peaceful around the lake... Seems this is another dimension...
I wonder if it's because of the palaces surrounding it, or the Hotel Taj Lake Palace IN it...
The thing is... It's peaceful there...

This year has been anything but black and white. I learned to see shades of grey this year that I never knew existed. I also was able to experience amazing color and adventure.
Last year, one of my goals/wishes for 2011 was to meet some of my Flickr contacts in person. I'm happy to say that I was able to make that happen. Doing so has not only enhanced my life, I would have to say that it has also been life changing.
In February, I got to meet M-C and Debbie/sparkleplenty_fotos. Then in March I met Viewminder . And just last month, in November, I was able to meet Xavier and Susy! I thank each of you for taking the time to meet me! Meeting each of you was more wonderful than I could have imagined!
I have also had the good fortune this year to have become closer friends with many of my Flickr contacts as well as having had the opportunity to meet many new local photographer friends! I look forward to growing all of these friendships in 2012 as well as being able to meetup with several more of you in person!!
I posted a shot from each in the comments so you can read about the meetups if you've just recently started following my stream!!
For Me Again Monday Theme for Monday December 26th - Best of 2011
Friendship is more than the state of being friends. It is laughter. It is happiness. It is care. It is support. It is comfort. It is commitment. It is adventure. It is everything. It is love.
I wrote that for an essay on the most important type of love. I chose friend to friend love.
As you guys know, on the left is Dee. I could sit here and write about our friendship, but what’s the point? I don’t have the time and I never will. Just know that I love her. On the right, is Ashley, as I mentioned on this day, which was when this was taken (Story of the day also there). I just met Ashley this school year and I adore her! As you may (or may not) know, I’m not too good at making friends. Or perhaps I don’t have a lot. I’m the kind of person with a close… I just can’t write anything right now. I had this whole story in my mind but I just can not do it at this point. Sorry.
But I will say, Dee and Ashley only just met on that day and I hope we go on many more adventures together!
I took an entire roll of film on Saturday with my Minolta X 700 (Mickey) and usually I don’t take one roll in a day. But I had to because I couldn’t make myself anticipate like I had done with my Holga. If I hadn’t told you, I started a roll of film with my Holga back in November. And I KNOW she can take lovely pictures. I took special care to only take really important and beautiful pictures of my friends and people and such since they would automatically go on my wall and I wanted to do plenty of double exposures. Most of the pictures were of Dee and we had all of theses amazing pictures because she took film too. Finally, I get the film developed and everything is white, all 36 pictures. I cried. It just meant so much to me and it was really upsetting. So with this roll, I wanted to do it quickly so my anticipation wouldn’t build up too much. Plus, I didn’t know if the camera would be working.
BUT EVERYTHING CAME OUT AMAZING!!! You’ll see more of this film later because according to Dee and Gina, they came out well!
P.S. Dee, those missing pictures, I WILL MOST LIKELY GET RE-DEVELOPED! I looked at the negatives and nothing looked wrong with them so I think the people screwed up and I should get them re-printed and hopefully for free<3

Ugh...second from the last week and all I have to offer is another lame reflection shot. On a positive note, I am almost finished with this project. :)
Our dear PIGLET escaped from us the other day and ran away with a handsome stranger that promised him to show him even more world....
What Piglet didn't know is that we had a tracking device on him, so we managed to find him and interrupt the romantic picnic... :-DDD

As we approach the Thanksgiving Day holiday, I found it appropriate to reflect on the things that I'm most grateful for in my life. Of course, the first thing that pops into my mind is Tom ... my husband, my sherpa, my best friend, my partner in adventure travel.
This is an image of Tom hiking out in front of me when visiting Katmai NP & Preserve and the bears that we both share a passion. As I carry the fluids, the food, the extra layers of clothes and the plethora of memory cards(yes, only I can carry those ... for I don't want to be able to blame anyone else should I misplace them - LOL). Then there's my sherpa's backpack ... 3 camera bodies, 2-3 landscape lenses, 2 prime lenses (300mm & 500mm), and an intermediate 70-200mm lens ... let's just say that it weighs substantially more than mine, even before you add on the tripod and Wimberly gimbal head. Tom not only carries it, but he does so without moaning and groaning, which is sometimes not the case for me. LOL.
Though Tom's an avid, no make that hard core, cyclist, he parts with his road & mountain bike for weeks on end while we're traveling on various photographic endeavors. Doesn't even complain about not having his bike, though I see him checking out with envy every bike we pass along the way. OK, there was that time in Moab when he REALLY missed his bike and he vowed to never return there again without it. :-)
He encourages me to do whatever I want to do and to challenge myself. He's always game for trying something new ... most times they frighten me, but with Tom by my side I know that I'll be fine. When I wanted to go to Yellowstone in the winter and there was only 1 seat available, he supported my decision to go solo and made me believe that I could make it without my sherpa on that equipment-laden trip. I'm sure he was secretly laughing at me trying to get my 49# camera bag into the overhead on not just 1 or 2, but 3 planes along the way ... one way that is ... but that's understandable, as I was laughing myself.
When we got married over 6 years ago, we promised each other a life of friendship, adventure, and love. He has carried out his end of the bargain with the same gusto as when he carried that heavy backpack in the image above. :-) For that, and many other reasons, I'm thankful.
Tonight a new blog post will be published. It's a bit more personal than usual and a bit reflective on the things that I'm grateful for.

In the midst of movement and chaos keep stillness inside you. ~ Deepak Chopra
I try to tuck moments like these away in my memory. A sort of mental "fave" to draw from when I need to remind myself to be still inside.
Two more weeks and I will have completed this year-long project! I took this shot yesterday on my way home from a photowalk group meeting. I stopped along the lakefront when I saw how beautiful the sky was with such soft pastels. I took my iPhone 365 shot then I switched cameras on the tripod and moved closer to the lake to take my 52-week shot. In this shot I was looking over at a lighthouse off the shore (shot in the comments).
It was bitterly cold and despite that I only removed my gloves for a few seconds at a time, they still froze. When I got back to my car, I had to take several minutes to warm my hands up enough to drive. I'm heading back out in it today. I must be crazy!
{50/52}
Today ends my 52-week self-portrait project. It's been an amazing year. First of all, I want to thank everyone who has supported me, I truly appreciate your kind words, your help, faves and views. I know that it takes precious time out of your day to do so. I've come to know so many wonderful people here on Flickr, you inspire me daily to be a better photographer and a better person. And by just being here, you brighten my days and weeks. Truly. I am grateful for the many groups that I belong to that provided inspiration along the way. Me Again Monday has been huge this year for inspiration and support! Thank you Patty and everyone.
Personally, this last year has been the best one of my life so far. It's been a year of growing, learning, and putting my feelings about things and thoughts into action. This year has been overflowing with fun and adventure. Laughter and joy managed to find its way into every one of my days. Some days more than others, but there was always a bright spot. It's been a year of deep appreciation, contentment and love, such that I'd never experienced before. I look forward to more of the same this next year.
I won't be starting up with another 52-week project right now. I am currently doing a 366-project, all self-portraits, all on my iPhone. I am certain that I will continue to post selfies as well as my other photography with my "real" camera. It you notice that I haven't posted in a while, I'd appreciate a nudge!
