My heart breaks and my soul mourns......Read On!!!!
This is a shot taken on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park in an area of the Kawuneeche Valley known for it's large moose population. We had arrived at the campground my daughter and I, just as it was getting dark and I was unaware of the tragedy that would soon be revieled to me by the morning's light. I woke at 4:30am and headed down to the valley in hopes of capturing some moose in thier natural habitat, but as the light emerged I was shocked to see the vast catastrophe that had ensued here. It shows the devastation that is currently ravaging our treasured forests and National Parks.
Here's some more info about the situation in Yosemite.

Here's a photo from my friend Jesse Lazaro which shows the effect on Yosemite Valley, this is less than a year of infestation.

Thanks Jesse!!!
Armies of tiny bark beetles are wreaking havoc on the drought-weakened pine trees throughout California and Colorado in a fast spreading epidemic that biologists fear could soon turn catastrophic.
Local, state and federal officials are virtually helpless against the pestilence, which has turned hundreds of thousands of acres of forest brown and left huge fire-prone stands of dead wood.
The trees are being devoured by millions of native beetles, each about the size of a grain of rice. The insects, thriving in the warm weather and lack of freezing temperatures, are overwhelming the defenses of water-starved trees, attacking in waves and multiplying at a frenzied pace, depositing eggs under the bark that hatch into ravenous larval grubs.
The infected trees are on private and public lands, in national parks, wilderness areas and managed forests. There seems to be no solution short of removing the dead and dying trees and hoping against hope for rain and cold. The worst of it is in the southern part of the state, but pest management experts say the plague is moving north. Let's just hope that there will be natural balance caused by nature to save our beloved Forests.
Thanks to all my friends and family that have wish me well during my recent sickness. I appreciate all of the kind comments to that regard, I am feeling much better today. Many thanks to you all. :)
And thanks for taking the time to take a look at my photos, and as always, your views, comments, faves, and support are greatly appreciated!! Have a great weekend everybody!! :)

A massive die-off of pine trees in the southern Sierra Nevada caused by beetles attacking drought-stressed trees is turning forests brown and creating a fire tinderbox, from El Portal in Mariposa County to Kernville in Kern County and beyond, stands of dead trees are striking fear in the hearts of mountain residents.

Downtown Fresno. The name Home Run Alley refers to the fact this alley runs behind the left and centerfield portions of Chukchansi Park, the Fresno baseball stadium The building here is the back side of the historic Radin-Kamp department store, which opened at this location in 1924 and was taken over by J.C. Penney in 1941. It closed in 1986. The structure appears to be empty, if not abandoned. Some details here: historicfresno.org/lrhr/124.htm. In 1942, a US Army Air Corps AT-7 plane crashed into Mt. Mendel. The wreckage was discovered in 1947, but not all the bodies were recovered. A few years after we climbed this route, the body of one of the missing airmen was found very close to here, partially encased in ice.
08/21/07 UPDATE - Another WWII airman was discovered near here within the last few days. Read about it here.

This area was the old Fresno motel row right along old Hwy 99. These were my absolute favorite signs in Fresno and I'm glad I have photos of them because they are gone now. Miss the Fresno Motel diving girl the most.
Diving girl was saved and displayed at Fresno Fair this year - Thank you Debra Jane.

Here's a few photos I took this morning inside the rebuilt Hampton KK. This new store was built on the site of the old one last year, which had become too outdated (no drive-thru, limited dining room space, etc.). This new location looks like every other newer KK and doesn't have the charm that the old building had, but it's okay overall and the extra floor space is welcome. I didn't get any exterior pictures yet, but like the interior, it also has the same cookie-cutter design all modern KKs have.
I have been absent from flickr for quite a while now. But I haven't abandoned this place. The whole month of January is a sorrowful blur to me. My dearest brother Ian, passed away on the 23rd of January after a long bout with pneumonia. He was only 62 yrs. old and none of us were prepared for this loss. I still have a hard time believing it happened. He was a noble, kind, intelligent, wise, loving soul, the kind this world needs more of, and seems to lack these days.
He was an amazing man. He suffered a broken neck when he was only 17 yrs old, playing high school football; and was never supposed to walk again, but somehow he willed himself to do it...and did it for many years...he drove across this country of ours several times...he did things I would find hard to do and I'm not paraplegic!. He had spent the last five years living in the city of Fresno, and loved his place there in the Fulton Mall...he finally found his home, and never wanted to go anywhere else again. He was very much an activist, and was fighting hard to save the Mall, as the city of Fresno is planning on destroying this place, to put in more parking. www.facebook.com/FultonMall

He was our big brother and he will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

Several homeless Fresno residents who were plaintiffs in class action law suit against the City of Fresno, California speak to press after a judge gave final approval to a $2.3 million settlement agreement.
During the summer of 2006 the City of Fresno seized and destroyed the property of homeless residents. Many lost all their meager belongings including insulin and other critical prescriptions, identification papers, clothes, family photos, tents, cooking utensils, pay stubs and even an urn containing the ashes of a mother of one of the residents.
In October 2006 the residents brought a class action suit with the assistance of the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California, San Francisco Lawyers Committee on Civil Rights and the private law firm of Heller, Ehrmen. They sued the City of Fresno, its Mayor Alan Autry and the Chief of Police, among others.
When a tentative settlement was announced in June, Mayor Autry (best known for his portrayal of Captain Bubba Skinner in the TV program "In The Heat of the Night" television series) declared: "white collar exploitation of the homeless by the court and the lawyers is unconscionable." His lawyers had negotiated the settlement and Autry had approved it.
Today, after the hearing, Autry claimed that the judge gave no explanation of why he approved the paying of attorney fees to the lawyers. Although Aurty was not in court, his lawyer was. So was I. The judge spent 15-20 minutes explaining why the attorney fees were "fair and reasonable"
After court I had the good fortune of joining the attorneys and named plaintiffs for a victory celebration.
Please see my "Fresno Homeless" set for pictures of the unlawful seizure and destruction of the peoples property. You can be the judge of who is exploiting the homeless in Fresno---the city, or the lawyers and the courts? www.flickr.com/photos/cschneider56/sets/72157594490807067/

We were lucky there was still so much water and were able to see this wonderful waterfall. It was a long walk up the Mist Trail to get to this point but it was more than worth it.There wasn't time to get all the way to the top... maybe next time. Locals kept reminding us of the story of 3 people falling to their deaths just a few weeks earlier, while dozens of other tourists watched. Their bodies were never found.

On Sept. 4 1943, Bee readers were greeted by two cartoon figures on Page 1. One was a bee waving a newspaper, the other a bee talking into a radio microphone. In between was a photo of the world famous animator Walt Disney.
Anxious "to lend personality and a familiar identity to all the products" of the McClatchy company, an accompanying article explained, Eleanor had approached Disney about creating some logos. Disney, who did not ordinarily accept commercial work outside his own studio, agreed to take on the assignment if the company would donate $1,500 to the Army Relief Fund.
Eleanor agreed, and thus was born Scoopy (the newspaper bee) and Gaby (the radio bee). Scoopy would come to adorn the frontpage mastheads of all three papers, while Gaby was used on radio station promotional material.
Over the years, staff artists added - with Disney's permission -- Flutey (for the company's FM stations), and Teevy, (for the television stations.) At least eight other variations of the character have appeared periodically over the years to celebrate various holidays or mark company promotions, or been used on company merchandise.
Each of the Bee newspapers also owns a life-size Scoopy costume which is donned to make public appearances.

This photo of the Vernal Fall and its mist-induced rainbow was taken the day before 3 careless hikers plunged to their death over this fall. This fall and its upstream brother, Nevada Fall are spectacularly powerful both to the eye and to the ear but it is not something man can bend to his will. Passing guard rails for a "better look" or a "better picture" is foolish as has been tragically illustrated too many times.

♫ There is interest by many people to save the ranch house once owned by Bob Wills of Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys fame. This house and surrounding 80 acres was the Triple B Ranch in Fresno, CA. Bob and family lived here from 1945 to 1948. He sold it in 1950. I don't know how many owners there have been since but it looks like it has been vacant for years. This is still in a rural area but developers want to build tract homes here and need the house to be moved which the new owner will be required to do. Many folks want it to be saved and given historic status. ♫♪♫
UPDATE August, 2013: The house was purchased and will become a future country music museum! - The house was moved to the small town of Prather.
