The Los Angeles food truck fad has definitely worn out the tread on its tires in the past several months. When Jack in the Box boasts a fleet of trucks, you know the shark has been jumped. There are, however, still a couple intriguing concepts roaming the streets that deserve a try if for no other reason than you can’t find its repast done quite the same way in any brick-and-mortar setting.
Lobsta Truck is one of those concepts. For the uninitiated (or those who have never been to the New England states), Lobsta Truck (yes, “lobsta” as to poke fun at the region’s thick accent where even the Red Sox are known simply as the “Sawks”) specializes in Lobster Rolls aka Lobster Dogs.
You couldn’t imagine a simpler notion.
Take a short, white hot dog bun, grill it ever-so-lightly and dress the bread with either melted butter or mayo (go butter). Then dump a clump of fresh, crisp, chilled lobster into the fray and serve. The result is thoroughly satisfying so long as you expect nothing more than the simplicity described above. Purists revel in the decadence of the dish while the non-initiated most often balk at the concept. This is all I get for $12?
Yes, and that’s all you need.
The Lobsta Truck purveyors must fly in hundreds of pounds of fresh lobster every day and, when you think about what fresh lobster meat costs, $12 for a good half-pound of the crustacean’s crown jewel is not that bad a deal.
For a buck less, the fresh crab may actually taste better. Sure crab is less transcendent than its arthropod cousin, but she emits a more salty sea succulence that – with a squeeze of fresh lemon – makes the tongue bow to the godliness of Poseidon’s great adventures.
Clam chowder is the only other “main course” offering and is definitely a distant supporting character. The rolls themselves will seem wee on arrival, but take a bite, savor, imagine Martha’s Vineyard silvery blue waters slapping the curb beneath your toes and finish with the perfect pairing of the truck’s fresh-squeezed lemonade.
If you love lobster, this truck claws a huge itch. If you don’t…seriously who are you?
Live Maine Lobster, $6.99 per lb.?? This is unheard of on a retail level. Each of these babies weighs in at approx. 3lbs. That a 3lb Live Maine Lobster for about $21 bucks...
They even boil them for you while you wait with big steamers in back.
Oh, the Live Spotted Prawns don't look bad either..

Boats bring in large hauls of salmon and other fish, crabs, and other goodies. We love to get fresh catch directly from the boats. Here is a tank ful of squirming dungeness crabs. We bought two crabs, weighing a total of about 8 lbs.
Two crabs ended up in a big steamer pot in our kitchen. Here, they swim in the sink before joining garlic lemon butter for our feast.
