This maple tree needs warmth and is therefore planted on the south side of our home. Hope it will survive this unusually harsh winter. Photo No. 6 of Project No. 3 - 2023 Palette of two or three colours (against a black background where appropriate).
I put fresh seed out on top of the one inch of freezing rain to make it easier for the birds to reach the seed. However, the FOSP chose to dig the seed out with his huge claws. He has a piece of cracked corn in his beak with a bit of ice on it. He also has ice crystals on his tail and feathers. FOSPs are one of my favorite Winter visators.
View from my window - Having one of those horrible weather days in Toronto - icy roads and sidewalks, accidents, fallen electrical lines, sirens... I won't venture outside and risk a fall!
Freezing rain - atmospheric precipitation that falls from the clouds at negative temperatures. Freezing rain is observed at presence of a temperature inversion, when the ground is cold air, and over it a layer of warmer air with positive temperature.
Morning in the city park in Krasnogorsk. All the trees are covered an ice crust ... beautiful, but very detrimental for nature. This hell is for the birds: the branches easily break and have nothing to eat.
in winter, and then I work in the brown field :-)

winter and hated summer. Now that I’m even older, and wiser, I hate both summer and winter :-)

“Optimism. It’s not just a mind-set, it is behavior.” – Larry Elder
Freezing rain has the ability to change an Autumn garden into a world sparkling like diamonds.
Frozen...
Right after Christmas we made our way to Heart Lake and spend a few hours braving the cold to get some shots.
The lake froze over and everything in the water was engulfed in ice, held captive until the spring thaw.

A winter evening in Berlin.
In front the Spree, behind the "Berliner Dom", the Friedrichsbrücke and the "Museumsinsel". Ice floes drift silently along the Spree.
While I was taking pictures on the spot, freezing rain began. That struck me first because suddenly I could hardly see the Berlin Cathedral. When I was done with the long time exposures, I pretty much had to scrape snow and ice from the front lens.
After days of Arctic outflow weather, Snow and bitter temperatures, the outflow has been defeated by the inflow. We are now in a transition between snow and freezing rain. Heavy rain forecast for all the next week will make snort work of the snow! Here is a branch of a Japanese Maple coated in ice.
My garden holds delights no matter the season. I love knowing that when the winter winds howl and the rain pours down, I'll have the opportunity to watch what frost and freezing rain do to my plants. This sparkling sculpture was glistening in the sunlight after some freezing rain fell the previous night. The world shone as if it were covered in diamonds.
We call this glitter. It's a nice way of saying freezing rain. A pretty name to soften the blow maybe? Who needs spring anyways!?
This is day two of glitter and I'm patiently waiting for the sun. Nothing is quite as wonderful as sun-shiny, sparkly ice. The wait continues....the sun has to come out eventually, right?
ENG: Good morning everyone! Now the polar vortex Split with its squalls is there and has brought us here in Berlin some snow. There are only a good 5 centimeters but better than nothing. For this we still have a feel temperature of about -18℃. You can see the Brandenburg Gate at -8℃ and snowflakes in the Berlin district Mitte. ☻

Freezing rain is not fun when you have to walk or drive somewhere. Fortunately I did not have to go far to find this image. On this day the annoying freezing rain created a magical wonderland in my own backyard.
