Frozen grass, reed stems and other objects become special ice sculptures during a really cold winter day in March. This in combination with some snow and the temperature just below freezing but a wind chill of no less than -14 ° C sub zero.
Nature proved to be the ultimate artist at the Haringvliet as the freezing frost transformed simple blades of grass into crystal works of art. When the cold surf meets the shore, tiny droplets are tossed into the air and instantly freeze upon contact with the vegetation along the waterline. This repetitive layering process creates thick, bulbous ice casings known as "glaze ice," which can become surprisingly heavy. Unlike typical icicles that hang downward, these formations grow outward and upward, shaped by the rhythmic splashing of the waves.
It is a fleeting gallery that disappears as soon as the sun climbs high enough to break the spell. This specific weather phenomenon often occurs when a strong wind pushes water against a sub-zero coastline, effectively "shrink-wrapping" the landscape in glass.
This frozen moment serves as a reminder of how dynamic our coastal ecosystems are, even in the dead of winter
