Calgary is in above freezing temperatures, what is called 'Chinooks' or 'Indian weather!' Whatever it is, it surely is a welcoming relief!

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. - Freezing temperatures, muddy conditions, simulated explosions and countless physical challenges awaited Team APG Soldiers and civilians who honored the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor during the Physically, Mentally and Emotionally, or PME, Hard Challenge, Dec. 9.

If one must face vomit, Antarctica is the best place in the world to do so. It freezes quickly and thus does not stink. However, this photo of someone's double chunder proves that old-fashioned temperate barf may indeed be the best kind.
Notice that the barf on the left could easily be quickly scraped up with a shovel and pushed over the ledge, never to be seen again. The barf on the right, however, has infiltrated the walkway mesh, and cannot be done away with so easily. Whereas a runny temperate barf in this circumstance might be whisked away with a large bucket of water or two, this frozen barf, trapped in the mesh, would most likely require a GA on hands and knees chipping it away all morning with a screwdriver. The flecks of ice vomit would no doubt cover the worker without consequence, until lunchtime when the warm din of the Galley would melt the vomit-crust, and the hapless Fingee would suddenly, in the middle of the workday, reek like a 155 bathroom on Saturday night, and for the next ten years would carry some terrible nickname.

With the recent rain, freezing temperatures and ice, I noticed the other day that ice on the top of some trees glistened in the rare sunlight. Looks like tiny light bulbs on the branches.

Winter has hit Lebanon full force with its freezing temperatures, bone-chilling wind and snow. Refugee camp residents across Lebanon face the harsh conditions with little heat or proper clothing. Palestinian families fled their homes in Syria, leaving everything behind except a few articles of clothing and a pair or two of summer shoes.
ANERA Delivers Kits to 1,300 Refugee Families in Beddawi Camp
ANERA has partnered with Najdeh Association to respond with a winter kit distribution to 1,300 families in northern Lebanon’s Beddawi Camp. Each kit consists of blankets, children’s clothes, an insulating straw mat and an emergency light unit. Families also receive assistance in properly managing winter illnesses. Funding for the kits came from UMCOR (The United Methodist Committee on Relief) and Johnson & Johnson,
“The kit had lots of good, helpful, high-quality items and, with the several hours of power cuts, the lanterns fill a huge gap,” says Hana Al Einen, head of Najdeh Association in the camp.
Naseer from Syria, a father of three, also expressed his appreciation for the emergency lights. “Our neighbors are living in a basement and their children are studying by candle light,” says Nasser. “Many kids drop out of school because they can’t study at night, so the lanterns are essential.”
ANERA’s winterization program targets families with special needs
“Palestinians with special needs in Beddawi camp are usually the most marginalized and forgotten group when there are humanitarian crises,” says Ahmad Daoud, emergency officer at CBRA, local partner of ANERA. “In this distribution, we focused on 300 families who live with special needs and could really use a little extra help this winter.”
Fidaa Al Arid brought her seven-year-old daughter Maria to help pick up the winter kit. Maria suffers from cerebral palsy, making it difficult to walk. The mother of six explains that Maria needs assistance around the clock.“ I am very happy to have this kit and glad for the lighting as well as the winter clothes for my daughter.”
“We are hearing great feedback about the emergency lights…”
CBRA workers say the distribution is running smoothly. After checking their names on a list, families pick up their kit and leave with a package of warm winter items and a smile on their faces. “People are very satisfied with their kits. We are hearing great feedback about the emergency lights because lighting is a tremendous issue during winter when the days are shorter and electrical outages are more common,” adds Ahmad. “This is a particular problem for people with visual impairments, because they are at risk of hurting themselves. So the extra light is a safety feature for them.”

The Najdeh Association distributed winter kits to 1,000 Palestinian families from Syria seeking refuge in Lebanon’s Beddawi camp.
ANERA Delivers 4,000 Blankets to Refugee Families in Nahr El Bared and Burj El Barajneh
In nearby Nahr El Bared camp and in Burj El Barajneh camp outside Beirut, ANERA has distributed 4,000 blankets, thanks to the generosity of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) Charities that wanted to provide winterization support to Palestinian refugee families. The two camps host thousands of Palestinian families who fled the war in Syria, which has been raging for four years.
LDS Charities has partnered with ANERA in Lebanon for the past three years. Werner Gysler, country manager of LDS Charities in Lebanon, welcomed the opportunity to help. “We have been very satisfied working with ANERA so when they called us to contribute to the winterization program, we were anxious to help.”

California King Snake, found outdoors in near-freezing temperature. The next warm day we'll put it back outside.
I assume it's young. It is thinner than my little finger.
Update on our poor little snake. It died. It wouldn't eat anything, so we cooled it down for hibernation. But after watching it in hibernation for a couple of weeks, we realized it was dead.
It never did close it mouth, and blew bubbles now and then, so it could have been really sick to begin with.

It’s that time of year again when EEC are getting ready to crawl through mud, jump into a container of ICE, run through wires containing 10,000 volts of electricity, – it can only be Tough Mudder 2014! The team are going to have to suffer through freezing temperatures, run 12 long miles through thick sticky mud, hills, rough terrain and did I mention the mud! It’s going to be epic and could possibly be the hardest and most gruelling event the team will ever face!
Last year EEC took on the Yorkshire event; this year we are taking on Tough Mudder North West at the Cholmondeley Estate with 13,000 other brave and crazy people! And after 6 hard weeks of Bootcamp, the team feel trained and are pumped up and raring to go. The course will test the team’s physical and mental limits, their sanity, bravery and biggest and deepest fears – electric shocks, shockingly icy water, dark and confined spaces, fire, heights, exhaustion… The course has been compared to that of Royal Marine training courses and only the bravest and most physically trained will manage to stagger across the finish line to get that much needed beer and well deserved headband.
6 brave members of the EEC team will also be taking on the ‘Mudder Legionnaire’ obstacles in the hope of joining the new ‘Mudder Legionnaire’ – a special organisation of multi-mudders, people who have completed 2 or more Tough Mudder events. If they manage to complete the course and the extra obstacles they will be rewarded with an extra green headband and ultimate respect.
And not only are the EEC team preparing to take on what is advertised as ‘possibly the toughest event on earth’ they are also busy raising money for two fantastic charities – Brain Tumour Research and Queenscourt Hospice. And did we mention we had to sign a death waiver?!

Thawing Out
After a couple of weeks of below freezing temperatures and plenty of snow, the high today in the Denver area was in or around the 50s.
I have a love-hate relationship with winter in that I enjoy the way the snow looks and makes everything else look; and in this case, when snow melts and cool things like this happen. The other side of that coin is I have to deal with the cold, wind, driving, other drivers and so on.
One of my goals for this year (rather than resolution) is to try to be more positive in all aspects of my life. In doing so, I think coming to terms with the better side of winter falls into that category.
Day 5. Looking at the positive.

We woke before dawn. Freezing temperatures in the midst of summer never clicked with my Californian gears. So bringing my swim shorts to the Canadian Rockies was not a genius idea. The sun hid behind overcast clouds and tall mountains, but this view nonetheless made our early rise worth the trip.
