It finally snowed! And I learned that the 1/1000 and 1/500 speeds of my P67 fail at freezing temperatures. Sigh.

It was such a cold but bright and sunny day when I was over in Lymm Village the other day, the freshly broken ice floating on the water indicates the freezing temperature because otherwise it looks like a summers day, with Sooty's house bathed in the sun light.

The rock arch near White Tank campground in Joshua Tree. I shot a similar photo of the arch with my Rebel XT last year, but the noise and colors ended up out-of-control. Right after the sun set around 5 PM, the entire sky clouded up. We huddled around a small fire in freezing temperatures for several hours, constantly hoping that the sky would clear so we could shoot star photos. We finally decided to take turns checking the sky at intervals, and around 10:30 PM I went to bed. After half an hour, just when I had gotten warm and was drifting off to sleep, Matthew Saville informed me the sky had cleared. Michael Relich, Matthew, and I proceeded to shoot star photos and timelapse until around 6 AM, when we finally went to bed to catch a couple hours of sleep. After shooting this image, I set up my dolly and filmed timelapse of the arch.

Image Creation:

I shot 8 15-second exposures at ISO 6400 and f/2.8. These photos provided the data for the stars, and the exposure time was short enough for no star trails to appear. I also shot 4 30-second exposures at ISO 3200 and f/2.8. During these 30-second photos, I put a CTO (orange) colored gel over my headlamp and light painted the arch so it wouldn't be a silhouette. All images were shot on my tripod-mounted 7D with a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 at 15mm. The camera was not moved between images.

Processing:

I used DeepSkyStacker to align the 8 star images. Basically, this shifts the images so that the stars are always in the same place, in order to correct for the rotation of the Earth. I layered the aligned images in Photoshop using lighten mode, which reduces noise and brightens the image a bit. I also stacked the light-painted arch photos using lighten blend mode, which again reduces noise and evens out the light painting. I then flattened the stack of light-painted arch images and the stack of aligned star images. I blended together these two using quick masks. Finally, I massively brightened the image and enhanced contrast using Curves, increased the saturation, and sharpened with Unsharp Mask.

What a trooper! Poor Miss Kimberly did so great for us today in below freezing temperatures no less! Just 13 years old, isn't she gorgeous!?

Walking the dogs in the freezing temperatures means bundling in Nana's shirt. The cold out doesn't cool her heated passion for pushing just the right elevator button to go down.

The Brooklyn Bridge and buildings of Lower Manhattan, New York

Like many of my stories, this one involves a very long hike, challenging weather, two river crossings, a landscape of beautiful light and evocative atmosphere... and New York City? Indeed. It did not quite register with me that on this day we walked from our Canal Street hotel, across the Brooklyn Bridge (in sub-freezing temperatures), around areas of Brooklyn, and then back across the Manhattan Bridge to Canal Street and back to our hotel. The whole thing evolved organically, and we did not originally intend to do so much walking. There are days when I walk less than that during back-country Sierra Nevada trips!

We were meeting people from Brooklyn, but we figured that after a morning walk in Lower Manhattan that we would likely either meet them on the Manhattan side or take the subway over to Brooklyn - but when we found ourselves near the bridge we decided to walk across, and we met them mid-span. The very cold air was also blue-gray with haze, so I think I was in black and white mode as we walked across, thinking about how to use the haze. We arrived in Brooklyn, and eventually ended up in roughly the DUMBO (look it up!) area, where we ate, shopped a bit, and wandered. From there we decided to walk back to Manhattan via the Manhattan Bridge. If you have walked the Brooklyn Bridge - and who hasn't? - I recommend this alternative for a more "real" and a bit earthier view of things. In contrast to the typical mob scene on the Brooklyn Bridge, there was almost no one else walking the Manhattan - perhaps because it also carries very loud subway trains, has a much narrower walkway, and starts and ends in somewhat less well-known areas. But the view of the Manhattan Bridge, East River, and Lower Manhattan from this bridge is, I think, better than that from the Brooklyn Bridge. In this photograph the afternoon light was essentially back-lighting the tall buildings and the Brooklyn Bridge, and clouds gave some texture to the sky.

At 7 am I woke up with a blanket of snow to view outside my window . This looked beautiful . But after record freezing temperatures (10 F, with the windchill factor: -6 F) during the day by 6pm there was no more water in the building and around the neighborhood ( some pipes busted )

The sunset picture was taken at 6:30

Now this morning at 6am the electricity was cut off , fortunately restaured by noon today ! Still waiting for the water to come back at 4pm today !

It is still going to be freezing for a couple of days with some sleet and more snow .

I could have done without that !

The outer light of the St. Joseph, Michigan lighthouses is ice free and visible after a week of warm weather. Today's cold wind and freezing temperatures are once again building ice on the catwalk. The 15 to 20 foot thick mounds of shelf ice still engulf the north end of the pier.

This is the river that runs through Saline, Michigan, the town where I grew up. I drive pastit every morning on my way to school. This morning, I was early enough to stop and play. The air is so cold, that water at a freezing temperature still creates fog because it is warmer than the air.

Over a thousand people braved the freezing Lake Michigan water to raise money for the Special Olympics at the 13th annual Chicago Polar Plunge. They had to bring trucks in to clear out the snow and ice for the plungers to be able to enter the water.

I'm posting more than I usually do, but I figured that if these people were willing to jump in that frigid lake for charity and I got a picture of them, I owe it to them to post it!

After several weeks of below freezing temperatures with the wetlands and waterways iced up, a warming trend brought out this group of mallards enjoying the sunshine. Flying, bathing, splashing, preening, and showing off a banded leg were just a few of the crazy behaviors being shown in all the fun of a warm, sunny day in February.

This female Anna's Hummingbird seemed to be doing all right despite below freezing temperatures and strong winds. Must be be tough for these little birds to survive. it was in an area where it probably didn't get extra energy at a hummingbird feeder.

Hard freezes from many years past killed the scions "grafted portion of the tree" that once produced sweet oranges. Many of the trees grew back from the rootstock and now produce only sour oranges. The old groves reverted to forests with the citrus trees as understory plants. Sub freezing temperatures drove the citrus industry further south into central Florida.

If you live in the NYC and tri-state area... The Pepacton Reservoir in Delaware County, NY are the darkest skies you will find in the region. Just a 2 hour drive from the George Washington Bridge is all it would take to experience the incredible view and submerse yourself in the beauty that is our universe. I highly recommend the drive!.

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. - Freezing temperatures, muddy conditions, simulated explosions and countless physical challenges awaited Team APG Soldiers and civilians who honored the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor during the Physically, Mentally and Emotionally, or PME, Hard Challenge, Dec. 9, 2016.

"A grit bin or salt bin is an item of street furniture, commonly found in countries where freezing temperatures and snowfall occur, which holds a mixture of salt and grit which is spread over roads if they have snow or ice on them. A grit bin improves winter road safety on roads which are not gritted by other means, such as from a winter service vehicle."

12/27/2010 - After a night of howling winds and freezing temperatures, I was left with a lot of shoveling and some really cool looking 4 foot high snow drifts.

Given that the midwest has been BLASTED with well-below freezing temperatures for the past weeks, this image just needed to be my first installment in the weekly folder for 2018.

To get this, I mixed Karo syrup in with my G-babies bubble mix. The syrup add a goopyness to the recipe that helps thicken the bubble and keep it anchored to the snow in case of a light breeze.

I proud to say (silly I know) that I had no help with this...I blew the bubbles onto the snow in my wheelbarrow. It took about 20 seconds to start freezing, and when the frost covered the bubbles beyond halfway, I snapped the image.

Good thing, too. They popped right after this shot.

Let's hope 2018 warms up. Soon!!

for 7DoS: armed with my handwarmers, I decided to brave the freezing temperatures before I ran out of time for this week's theme :)

The summer is slipping away through my fingers and I am very unhappy... I want to go places, see things, experience new views and I know that time is short before the world will be covered in snow and the freezing temperatures will be keeping me tucked away at home... I dream of never-ending summer...
