One of the reasons for travelling to Bulgaria in mid-winter – and tolerating freezing temperatures down to -7ºC in a bird hide – was this little beauty. This single bird only appeared when groups of other species were already feeding. It would never come in to feed on its own.

The Sombre Tit breeds in open deciduous forest on mountain slopes or lower down in rocky terrain with trees and bushes. It has similar colouration to Willow Tit (Poecile montanous), but is the size of a Great Tit (Parus major).

The archetypical Disneyworld photo, however it was freezing! Temperatures fell to 27 degrees overnight.

I took this the same time I took him reading the book. I've really been trying to get a recent shot, it's just been freezing temperatures outdoors and I'm having trouble finding something to use indoors. I hope I can get more creative with these :). Happy Bench Monday everyone!!

At the Window Rock high plateau elevations, winters bring snow, subzero temperatures and frozen soils. The growing season for plants varies from 90 to 120 days. Precipitation averages 20 to 25 inches per year, sometimes more. The last killing frost in spring generally occurs in late May, but below-freezing temperatures have been recorded as late as mid-June.

Finally snow! And sun! Even many main roads weren't completely (or at all) snow- and icefree on sunday after the heavy snowfall from saturday because of the freezing temperatures. Made for a fun (and sometimes pretty difficult) Sundays ride.

Icy Trees

Winter Storm Shirley has made its way through Texas, bringing freezing temperatures and lots of precipitation. We’ve had it mild so far in New Braunfels. Ice and snow is forecast for Sunday night and temperatures are supposed to be in the single digits. Brrr. There is no school now (Thursday, Friday, and Monday) for teacher work days and President’s Day so we are hunkering down in front of the fireplace. Anna and I had to go out to PT on Thursday then pickup a curbside order at HEB. It was nasty. There was a horrible 135+ car pileup in Fort Worth that took 6 lives. I hope everyone stays safe this weekend.

We decided to escape the freezing temperatures in Pittsburgh and go somewhere even colder - Erie, Pennsylvania. Lake Erie is a beautiful site when it's frozen and we walked out a way over the frozen lake and frozen bay. We caught the sun going down on the final day of a very, very cold February.

Common Buckeye in Texas - The common buckeye or

simply, buckeye, (Junonia coenia) is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. This very commonly seen Buckeye butterfly

is brown above, with eye-spot and white bar on its forewing.

The wing markings of this diminutive butterfly resemble eyes, which may startle potential predators. They prefer open, sunny locations in fields and clearings. They are nervous, and alert,

and fly quickly when nearby movement is detected. It cannot

live in freezing temperatures, but moves quickly northward in

the spring to most of the United States and south Canada.

The population swells in the fall during the southward migration. Size: 2.0"-2.8". Favorite host plants: snapdragon, gerardia, false foxglove, ruellia. The common buckeye was featured on the

2006 United States Postal Service 24-cent postage stamp.

Sunrise in Mukurthi National Park, in south-western India's Western Ghats.

Sub-zero temperatures are usually never seen in tropical southern India. But in south-western India's remote Upper Nilgiris District, winter does bring in freezing temperatures. Me and Guru had woken up early to shoot the sunrise and all along we had warm gloves on our hands. I removed the gloves and adjusted my manual Nikon FM10 SLR camera. A few seconds later my hands were so cold that the fingers went stiff and were barely moving. I had to rub my hands vigorously and take a couple of shots before winding up the session, unable to withstand the cold.

Mukurthi National Park is in one of India's most beautiful districts - The Nilgiris. The park is located atop the Nilgiri Plateau and is home to some of India's most beautiful landscapes and endangered wildlife like Nigiri Tahr (a type of mountain goat) and Bengal Tiger.

I was in the gorge one morning in January 2011 before the sun crested the mountains. It was a gray morning, and very few people were out due to the freezing temperatures. I set up my Hasselblad at the fence by Multnomah Falls. The spray was getting on my lens, and then on the Kodak gel filter that I put in front of the lens. This wasn't good. I ended up placing a box over the camera to keep it dry. I shot up a half a roll of film there, and then I heard a shuffling behind me. I looked back to see a dog. From the dog hung a leash, held by a young woman.

Wearing red pajamas.

That's right. The wind chill put the temperature at 18 degrees, and she was wearing pajamas. Her dog looked warm, though. Her husband (Assumed) was close behind carrying a camera bag and was dressed for the weather. I couldn't help looking over at her from time to time, just to see if she was cold. I had an extra sweatshirt in the car. She seemed to be fine, though, so I didn't offer. People have different responses to cold weather. Mine is to avoid it if at all possible, and if not, to dress very warm.

"At the heart of this program is a unique, low-impact sustainable boat that will be among the most environmentally friendly and technologically advanced fishing vessels in the world. This innovative “green” boat is being specifically developed for the Alaska cod hook-and-line fishery. "

"This longliner is specifically developed for the Alaskan cod fishery and is designed by Skipsteknisk AS in Norway. This new ST 155L design has a moon pool in the center line for one fish to be caught at a time through the internal haul station, which is a first in the United States. The vessel will efficiently utilize proteins onboard- the fish wastage that is commonly ground up and discharged overboard. The internal haul station allows for the release of non-target species, as well as the crew to accomplish their work inside the boat without being exposed to rough seas or freezing temperatures and with no more risk of falling overboard during hauling."

Paddinton's Aunt Lucy, who is over here from the Home For Retired Bears in Peru, is not as excited about the snow as her nephew. She has no little yellow wellies or a super duffel coat to keep her warm in the present freezing temperatures and icy winds. She did try to venture out yesterday but took refuge under the garden table, where the snow had melted a little, before quickly making her way back into the warm house :-)

I think it might be a bit obvious that I am presently housebound and incredibly bored lol :-)

Geysers del Tatio - San Pedro de Atacama - Chile

El Tatio is a geyser field located within the Andes Mountains of northern Chile at 4,200 meters above mean sea level. Contrary to some reports, it is not the highest-elevation geyser field in the world. Puchuldiza Geyser Field, Chile, and possibly several other fields are higher in elevation (Glennon, J.A. and Pfaff, R.M., 2003). Tourists often visit the geysers while touring the nearby Atacama Desert and the village San Pedro de Atacama. "With over 80 active geysers, El Tatio is the largest geyser field in the southern hemisphere and the third largest field in the world, after Yellowstone, USA, and Dolina Giezerov (partially destroyed June 2007), Russia" (Glennon, J.A. and Pfaff, R.M., 2003). An arctic blast brought near-freezing temperatures and high wind advisory to Los Angeles, bringing the Air Quality Index to 1 (perfect air quality). The high winds were at about 50 mph in the Santa Monica Mountains where this image was taken. Luckily, I was able to use a natural barrier to protect my camera from the winds to capture this long exposure still.

Unfortunately, the clean air did not last for long.

Southern California would then see an AQI of up to 150 within less than 7 days later, prompting high air pollution advisory and wood-ban in place across counties.

The Russian aggression against Ukraine has provoked serious humanitarian challenges. Millions of people do not have access to basic services, including water, electricity and heating, while food supplies are running low.

In view of the freezing temperatures, this huge autotransformer has been delivered to strengthen Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. 3 meters wide, 5 meters high, 10 meters long, and weighing 200 tonnes – this powerful component will play a key role in transforming electricity from energy networks to consumers.

This transformer, worth more than €2 million, was offered by Litgrid and is part of the biggest logistics operation ever coordinated under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

I have a Slinky on the bird feeder pole in an attempt to deter squirrels from raiding the feeders. Today I was very into looking at the shapes outside all in black and white - a wet, heavy snow and barely-freezing temperatures that had our snow event straddling the line between a non-event and a proper snow, and the high-contrast lines to prove it. So I was fascinated by the geometry of the Slinky and the snow and the pole. I didn't de-saturate this, by the way.

Over a thousand people braved the freezing Lake Michigan water to raise money for the Special Olympics at the 13th annual Chicago Polar Plunge. They had to bring trucks in to clear out the snow and ice for the plungers to be able to enter the water.

I'm posting more than I usually do, but I figured that if these people were willing to jump in that frigid lake for charity and I got a picture of them, I owe it to them to post it!

Please take the time to view the entire set here.

While the rest of the United States is in deep freeze, California, in its fourth year of drought and is fast tracking from fall to spring missing winter along the way. These are buds of Sierra manzanita flowers. We usually find the bell-shaped flowers blooming in April and later, but the unseasonably warm February has fooled the bushes to come to life already. The ridge behind our cabin would normally be accessible only on snow shoes with sub-freezing temperatures, but today we walked on dusty trails under a warm 70 degree sun.

This seems to be the price of "higher-than-usual level of winter maintenance". One of the benefits of riding in freezing temperatures has been that the bike does not get messy at all. Keeping paths ice-free has its price. I would prefer vigorous plowing and sand. The dust or whatever it is was easy to remove, though.
