It has been unusually mild here. Many days of above freezing temperatures when the normals would be around -10C, maybe less. The snow is melting leaving a big slushy mess.

The snow, fog, low cloud and below freezing temperatures normally prevalent on the Brocken create icy sculptures of the trees which grow close to the tree line. Framed by frozen trees DR Class 99 23 2-10-2T 99 7234-0 climbs towards the Brocken Summit station HSB with the 10:25 8925 train from Wernigerode on 6th February 2018
After almost an inch of rain; below freezing temperatures have returned to Southeast Tennessee The indoor temperature is a bit warmer because tfhe oven was on preparing breakfast and Angie turned the heat up a bit as Mila is with us this long weekend!!! I saw 26 F but didn't grt a picture before it went to 27

I love the Central Valley tule fog during this part of the year — perhaps not for driving, but when it comes to creating moody and interesting atmosphere, the fog produces. In fact, quite often I'll check the weather forecast before heading that way during gate late-fall through early spring period, and if the weather looks too nice I won't go. But if the weather calls for fog, I'm on my way! This visit started out to be an exception to that rule, since the weather forecast did not mention fog at all. But when I checked the current conditions before departing there was an indication that some fog had developed in a few areas.
My drive, 100 miles done entirely in pre-dawn darkness, did not suggest fog... until I left the final town before arriving at my slightly remote location. Leaving town I immediately encountered a surprise fog bank, and it only got thicker as I turned off the main highway onto narrow country roads. I arrived at my destination in freezing temperatures and light fog, but the thick continued to thicken for the next hour. These lesser sandhill cranes were hanging out in a spot where I can reliably find them early in the morning, though they were a pretty good distance off across a network of wetland ponds. This group was assembled on a small island, and they must have been comfortable there, as they were the last group to finally take to the air and fly off.

Another idea I have had for literally years. Finally found someone who was willing to meet before sunrise, crawl through a fence into an abandoned lot, organize discarded chairs and stand in a dress in near freezing temperatures while holding a rusty broken umbrella. Thanks Ryan for continuing to be awesome!
It's getting to be very slim pickings for the remaining Monarchs. Frost, freezing temperatures, rain, gusty wind, lack of sunlight...and almost no flowers remaining to enjoy.
And yet they still manage to thrive. I presume that soon the last of these butterflies will head South.

After a few days of sun and balmy weather winter strikes back and presents us with freezing temperatures and a strong icy wind in Northern Germany.
So apparently we have to warm ourselves with colorful memories of last summer like this one :-)

Freezing temperatures and mists penetrate my soul

No walk with Bonny early this morning due to the overnight freezing temperatures and potential icy lanes.
After breakfast I got started with transferring some old Hi8 video tapes from my father-in-law's video camera. We are not sure what is on them but we don't want to throw them away. I had purchased a conversion piece of equipment many years ago for him to do the same, but he never did. So, not surprisingly, the kit is now so old it won't work with modern computers and software. I tried all sorts of combinations of cables, TV's, older laptops and so on to no avail. I ended up doing some online research and have ordered a new piece of kit that will hopefully convert the video ok.
Later in the afternoon, I took Bonny for her usual walk. I bumped into our Lengthsman who is installing the speed indicating device in the village. He also told me that the new footbridge is now in place and ready for use. An article has already been penned for the parish magazine!
This winter has brought several inches of snow to Long Island, and much of it has yet to melt as freezing temperatures have been the norm over the past few months. The beaches are snow covered too, and the white stuff is hiding the sands of summer.

A huge artificial 'New Year tree' in central Kiev has become.a symbol of anti-government resistance.
The 'tree' is festooned with a poster of jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko and scrawled with graffiti attacking President Viktor Yanukovich.
The Euromaidan (Ukrainian: Євромайдан, Yevromaidan, literally "Eurosquare") is a wave of ongoing demonstrations and civil unrest in Ukraine, which began on the night of 21 November 2013 with public protests demanding closer European integration. The scope of the protests has since evolved, with many calls for the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovych and his government. Many protesters joined because of the violent dispersal of protesters on 30 November and "a will to change life in Ukraine". By 25 January 2014, the protests had been fueled by the perception of widespread government corruption, abuse of power, and violation of human rights in Ukraine.
The demonstrations began on the night of 21 November 2013, when spontaneous protests erupted in the capital, Kiev, after the Ukrainian government suspended preparations for signing an Association Agreement and a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, in favor of closer economic dependence on Russia. After a few days of demonstrations an increasing number of university students joined the protests.
Despite so far unmet demands to renew Ukraine-EU integration, the Euromaidan has been repeatedly characterized as an event of major political symbolism for the European Union itself, particularly as "the largest ever pro-European rally in history"
The protests are ongoing despite heavy police presence, regularly sub-freezing temperatures, and snow.
According to a January poll, 45% of Ukrainians supported the protests, and 48% of Ukrainians disapproved of Euromaidan.

Sure, I do not like the winter and the freezing temperatures. But in this case, the frozen lake shortened the way to the old garrison. How convenient. =)
So this morning I decided to take up the {CarLee} challenge and attempt a sunrise... In below freezing conditions I might add.... So after 45mins of finger freezing temperatures I managed to actually press the shutter release and got a few shots... A few more may follow in the forthcoming weeks.... From THIS morning I might add, I'm not getting up early again... ;)
At the ghost town of Jericho, UT in the below freezing temperatures, the West Colton to Ogden manifest passes by the abandoned sheep corals.
One last shot in this series. - the afterglow which lit up the bottom of the clouds like a magnificent horizontal rainbow across an evening African savannah sky. Of course my imagination was catapulted back to reality by the loss of feeling in my fingertips from well below freezing temperatures.
Echinocereus comes in many varieties all of different colors, shapes, and sizes. Echinocereus subinermis are the more globular varieties with flowers that range widely from pink and white to grayish-blue and yellow. They are native to the Southwest, including Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico. Some grow at fairly high elevations, where they survive freezing temperatures. All have showy flowers in spring to early summer; and fleshy fruit that is edible in some species.
This was shot at dawn from Fort Lee Historic Park. I used a Lee 10-stop Big Stopper filter and a Lee 3-stop soft gradient filter. It was roughly a 2-minute exposure.
I was so lucky to have had the clouds moving in the same direction as my composition. Made the hour or so out in the below-freezing temperatures worth it.

Last of the Lake Superior fast ice- -about 100 km north of Sault Ste. Marie- -Kilometer 1148, Ontario Highway 17.
This pressure is about 5-6 meters thick as of April 1.
Fast ice is an extensive unbroken sheet of ice that is “fastened” to the shoreline or shoals; the ice forms from freezing temperatures (air and water), waves, drift ice, and snowfall.
This sheltered bay, on eastern Lake Superior, is part part of the Mamainse Point Formation: an area of the Midcontinent Rift System characterized by Precambrian (Mesoproterozic) volcanic activity over a billion years ago.
This. This right here is the reason we woke up so early, braved near-freezing temperatures, dodged other photographers and cursed the ducks until our voices were hoarse. In my mind, I had about 4 photos I *had* to take on this trip. This was number 3, and I love how it came out.

After another week of freezing temperatures (windchill of -40oC for a couple of days) it turned warm today so I dragged my husband to Elk Island for a couple of hours of enjoying sunshine and fresh air. And boy! I needed it!!
Name of rock as titled, although not evident in image, conditions were bitter as I had to endure freezing temperatures & near sustained windchill gust of up to 35mph. Waited patiently between gust just so I'd have the branches staying still to grab a shot, captured in Capitol Reef National Park.
Snow yesterday and windy with below freezing temperatures today. Clearly no on remembered to tell Spring that Winter was over...
Tulips from earlier this morning at the Lyman Conservatory. Today is the last day of the Spring Bulb Show there. One of the most beautiful shows in recent years and it's been packed every day. Congratulations everyone, wonderful work! :)

After another week of freezing temperatures (windchill of -40oC for a couple of days) it turned warm today so I dragged my husband to Elk Island for a couple of hours of enjoying sunshine and fresh air. And boy! I needed it!!
while I didn't withstand the freezing temperature for long, I did a quick walk around the lighthouse and managed to snap a few shots! It was SO COLD... -22 and with the wind it made it feel 100 times worse!

I'm back from vacation to Oregon and have many new images to share. The conditions were perfect for colorful sunsets during the visit, mostly clear skies during the day with some cloud cover in the evenings. The temperatures were quite mild for February as well, making my return home to below freezing temperatures an adjustment. I thought I would start off with a Winter image of Crater Lake. The colors there were very nice as the light faded into dusk. It was peaceful having the place mostly to myself this time too, just the way I like it. ;-) I have some serious catching up to do on Flickr and hope to get around to visiting all of my contacts work as soon as possible. Thanks for your continued views and support, it'a always appreciated!
It seems mad that only four weeks ago we had heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures, yet in the last week the UK has gone into full summer mode, with temperatures hotter than the Sahara (according to one daily newspaper). This scene looked fantastic to the naked eye, but the transfer of that into a photographic interpretation proved much more of a challenge. I made a number of images and variations of this scene, but this was the only one that I liked.
I haven't had any time to play in the snow this year. So, a quick detour this afternoon was exactly what I needed. I only had a few minutes, so I was pleased to seee these two doing there best to relax in the freezing temperatures. Hopefully, I will be able to get out and about properly this weekend.
It was a bitter cold night in Mount Parnassos, Central Greece. The full moon was gloriously lighting the mountain slopes above us. That partly explains why there aren't so many star trails visible in the sky. The contrast between the deep blue of the night sky and the white - blue of the snow made the waiting in those freezing temperatures worthwhile.
- www.kevin-palmer.com - Wandering around these sand dunes under the Milky Way, it looked like I had stepped into the Sahara Desert. But the freezing temperatures reminded me that I was still in Wyoming. The Killpecker Sand Dunes are actually the largest active dune system in the world outside of the Sahara. But the sand is spread out in many piles across 100 miles. They cross the Continental Divide at elevations over 7,000 feet. This pile was in Seminoe State Park. After shifting sand began covering this road, it had to be rerouted to the west. It was a strange feeling walking deeper into the dunes in the dark, as sand in every direction messed with my depth perception and I couldn't tell if I was going uphill or downhill. Strong winds during the day had cleared the dunes of all tracks left by humans or ATV's. It was a good thing the winds were calm now at 3AM because blowing sand and camera lenses do not go well together.

Thanksgiving morning arrived with a spectacular sunrise for those spending it at Restoule Provincial Park in Ontario.
The leaves are just gorgeous in this area right now, but with the below freezing temperatures at night, their showing will be short lived.
The distinctly different colours in the sky are a result of two seperate cloud banks. The orange/pink layer in the background was catching the sun as it was rising, while the dark blue clouds were much lower in the sky, and were moving across the sky at a good pace.

One of my all-time favorite Batten Kill chases was on December 28, 2010. During the warmer months, the Batten Kill typically leaves an engine at Cargill near Greenwich Junction, or near Eagle Bridge. During the winter, however, the engine is kept in the enginehouse in Greenwich due to freezing temperatures. This affords the opportunity to photograph the seldom-used section of track between Greenwich and Cargill. One of the most photogenic sections of that line is along Skellie Road. In this going-away shot, Batten Kill Alco RS-3 #605 heads for Cargill to begin switching before making a trip to Eagle Bridge.
