We usually only see these after first couple of cold nights at the start of Winter I saw this one on a walk around the farm.
Freezing temperatures force moisture out of these weed roots creating these ice flowers.
Have a great weekend!
We've been getting some heavy fogs over the last couple of nights, and me being an incurable insomniac - what better way to kill an hour or so, than a late night walk in just above freezing temperatures to the seafront?
I observed a fisherman out on the lake in sub-freezing temperatures. Because of the season, there was very little color out there. So I opted to focus on the fence and use the fisherman in the background to help create some color during editing.
I hope others enjoy this perspective as much as I do.

What happens to Robins in the winter?
In the winter, they become nomadic, searching widely for their favorite cold-weather fare. Weather also influences robin movements. A heavy snowfall that persists for more than a few days may send them on their way, searching for better conditions. Robins also form flocks in the winter.
Can Robins survive snow?
Even in freezing temperatures, robins can stay warm enough to make staying through the winter worthwhile. ... If you want to observe robins in winter, try putting out water for them. They can survive on their own by eating snow, but birds always welcome a source of unfrozen water for drinking and bathing.
What do Robins eat when there is snow on the ground?
There isn't much one can feed robins in the winter. They're very adept at finding their preferred food and rarely visit feeding stations. During severe weather, robins may eat raisins, berries, or pieces of apples placed on the ground.
Do robins sing all day?
We know that robins are one of the first species to begin singing every morning. ... They sing the most early in the morning and at evening twilight after sunset. They sing the least around noon. We thought we could figure out approximately how many songs they sing each hour through the day, and add these up.
What is the sound of a robin singing?
It's a string of 10 or so clear whistles assembled from a few often-repeated syllables, and often described as cheerily, cheer up, cheer up, cheerily, cheer up. The syllables rise and fall in pitch but are delivered at a steady rhythm, with a pause before the bird begins singing again. At dawn, the song is more rapid.
Why do robins sing in winter?
The sound of a robin chirping in winter is a good sign, say scientists. It means the bird has built up enough fat reserves to survive the cold nights and has enough energy left to defend its territory. The bird traditionally sings in spring to attract a mate but in winter, when food is short, it faces a dilemma.

This warmth-loving Florida girl took a trip out to Colorado, in January!!, to visit a great friend who also is a bird lover. We made a trek out to Guanella Pass for our target bird; the White-tailed Ptarmigan. We searched for several hours, in gusty winds, freezing temperatures and deep snow and finally found a group of about 15. We almost walked right by them they blended in so well in the snow.
It was amazing and worth every fall I took!

The little blue tit in front of my office window has pumped up quite a bit and now looks almost like a ball with feathers.
This is probably because winter has returned and a frosty wind is blowing.
The small and delicate fellows are real survivors. Despite freezing temperatures, they hardly ever freeze. They simply fluff up their feathers and create extremely effective thermal insulation from which only their feet can be seen. And these are simply cooled down to almost freezing point so that no heat is lost there. God, I don't want to have such cold feet.

Winter is still over a month away, though its effects are becoming more evident beginning this week. I've prepared gardens such as my cactus garden for the coming cold. While many of the cacti can handle far below freezing temperatures, some of the rarer cacti are quite sensitive to the cold. I erect a greenhouse over them for the winter with an oil-filled heater to keep them cozy. Other plants, like the chrysanthemum and camellias, have no fear of such times, "Winter? Bring it on!" This camellia looks like gold-frilled crinoline with a splash of pink. Pleasure in small graces... take 'em when you can.
The Haleakalā silversword, has numerous sword-like succulent leaves covered with silver hairs. Silversword plants in general grow on volcanic cinder, a dry, rocky substrate that is subject to freezing temperatures and high winds. The skin and hairs are strong enough to resist the wind and freezing temperature of this altitude and protect the plant from dehydration and the sun.
The plant's base of leaves, arranged in a spherical formation at ground level of the plant, dominates for the majority of the plant's life—which may be greater than 50 years. The leaves are arranged so that they and the hairs of the leaves can raise the temperature of the shoot-tip leaves up to 20 °C (36 °F), thereby having adapted to the extreme high-altitude temperatures by focusing the sunlight to converge at this point and warm the plant. took this photo a few minutes after the sun had dropped below the horizon. I had pulled the truck over to photograph Mount Shasta as it was being lit by the setting suns rays. the clouds looked like they were about to burst into flames, and juxtaposed by the near freezing temperature.
The week-and-a-half of below freezing temperatures can be viewed day by day in the stacking of the air bubbles in the ice. The frozen "popped" bubbles at the surface were amazing to me. It took a large cup of hot chocolate by the natural gas fireplace at the Inn of Montgomery Bell State Park to get the feeling back in our fingers and toes following a morning of taking shots that are rare in Tennessee.
We have been in a deep freeze for the past few days in Collin County, TX. Light snow (and everyone goes crazy) that is already gone. But still we are at freezing temps. The water fountains turn into "ice art" however! This is a part of a columnar water fountain and I noticed the angled shadows of the sun.

The winter in Inner Mongolia is very unforgiving. At a freezing temperature of minus twenty and lower, with a constant breeze of snow from all direction, it was pretty hard to convince myself to get out of the car and take photos. When I saw Inner Mongolia horsemen showing off their skills and commanding the steed from a distance. I quickly grabbed my telephoto lens and captured the moment when one of the horseman charged out from morning mist.

We are waiting for an exceptionally cold front from the east side of Europe. In the next days, the temperatures are expected to drop. And I expect to shiver a lot, as nothing in the world will refrain me from shooting a frozen world around me, at any cost... :)
PS: Photo taken with my point and shoot camera, which, by the way, is officially tested for freezing temperatures... :) At least, it would resist better than me!

Hopefully this was the last of the freezing temperatures. Apparently, I was told, these really cold winters happen about once every 30 years. I doubt I'll be here for the next one in 30 years time.
To warm our souls today with the freezing temperatures in New York City, we are thinking of the departed M&G Soul Food Diner on 125th Street in Harlem. This #soulfood restaurant closed in 2008 after it “went on vacation” and never reopened. We always loved its amazing #friedchicken and the gorgeous neon signage surrounded by light bulbs which announced “Southern Fried Chicken” in the most jaunty font and the “Old Fashion’ BUT Good” with the letter “I” dotted with a star ⭐️! The restauranteur and chef Marcus Samuelson @marcuscooks rescued part of the #neon signage but we are not sure of the whereabouts of the other parts of the #signage.
Our 35mm film photo of M&G appears in our book”Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York”.

a first taste of proper wintery conditions in netherlands. real winters with lot of snow are rare in coastal netherlands and the 2007/2008 one wasn't an exception. for a couple of days before xmas 2007 we did get some freezing temperatures and ceased wind, which produced a couple of foggy days and frozen landscapes. one afternoon i made my way to the famous kinderdijk and was rewarded with this splendid view
Not a great picture, but the best I could do with a fast-moving Robin! I was so impressed with how fluffed-up he was--the "fattest" Robin I'd ever seen! He did have reason. After some temperate days, today, he needed to deal with freezing temperatures & snow. Happy Spring, Mr. Robin! Troy, New York, USA on April 4, 2016. By the way, those are dead rose bushes in the foreground, killed off by excessive use of sidewalk salt, presumably to keep my apartment complex management from being sued. That crazy storm last week that brought in premature freezing temperatures also brought us an early fall! Enjoy it fellow Austonians, the colors are getting gorgeous!*
Happy Monday Everyone,
2 and a half weeks till I leave for South Africa again and the clock is ticking!!!
This past weekend I had a chance to revisit with some Flickr friends in Corona Del Mar Beach in Southern CA- there were 5 of us that had a little get together photoshoot & the sunset was spectacular, those photos later this week!! :D So good to make friends with like minds (crazy for landscape photography!!)
THESE shots (series of 2 new) were taken in below freezing temperatures in the high 9,000ft altitude of the Eastern Sierra's in California at North Lake. I went there with my Flickr friend Jojo(images of dreams) I've never seen so many photographers stacked, literally lined up to shoot this sunrise over the reflection in North Lake... we arrived a little late to the party so my angle (i.e. composition) was "chosen for me" in the first shot as I wedged between 2 other tripods.... i couldn't do it so I jumped the stream escaping a fall narrowly... and got to the other side where I could get a wider angle.
This place is amazing to Explore!!Photography opportunities abound all around the town of Bishop,CA near Mammouth Lakes. I hope you like them :D Thanks for your visits and comments!! Have a great week!
We had ice rain which became sleet on Sunday. Freezing temperatures for more than 40 hours, which is unusual for North Texas.
The main breeding ground of the James flamingo. This species was discovered in the late 19th Century, on an expedtion funded by Harry Berkley James, which is where they got their name. But they weren't seen again for nearly seven decades, so it was thought to be extinct.
But the reality was they managed to thrive in an inhospitable area, high up in the Bolivian altiplano, where humans rarely ventured, hence they were never seen. These flamingos can cope with freezing temperatures, burning sun, howling winds, and they eat and breed in corosive salt lakes.
A 1957 expedition rediscovered the James Flamingo at Laguna Colorada, and it's been a nature reserve for about 50 years.

I'm not the biggest fan of winter.. it's the season where I feel the least inspiration. Winter in England does not mean snow just lots of ice and below freezing temperatures. I have a deadline to meet in 3 days time.. let's just say I'm feeling a little run down already :)
I miss the vitality and life of summer.
California fall color has been a challenge so far in 2019. What had started out to be a great start to the season was interrupted by a cold front sweeping through the Eastern Sierras. This 3 day storm brought freezing temperature and snow which played havoc on all of the trees leaving spotty conditions all up and down the mountains. This was taken Monday just after the storm passed. It was beautiful and the tress were popping! I was excited to bring my friend back on Wednesday to get some more great pictures. When we arrived most of the leaves had turned brown do to the two nights of bellow freezing temps and everything else was on hold. Hopefully this week things will get back to a more normal fall pattern (if there is such a thing anymore) and the lower elevations will be amazing. Good luck to all who are going this week and thanks for stopping by.

Gordon and I hiked up into the Cairngorm hills to around 900m.
A day with blustery strong winds and showers of hail and snow! We had looked and looked for the Ptarmigan and had given up seeing these beautiful birds.
When on our way down we came across 3 just off the path. Luck was on our side, and we both got our very first photographs of this very special bird that lives in extreme weather conditions and freezing temperatures.
The ptarmigan is a game bird, slightly larger than a grey partridge. In summer, it is a mixture of grey, brown and black above with white bellies and wings. In winter, it becomes totally white except for its tail and eye-patch, which remain black.
It breeds in the highest mountains of the Highlands of Scotland on the Arctic like landscape there. Birds are residents, seldom moving far from breeding sites. In severe cold weather, birds may move from the highest ground to the edge of forests.

We have four Anna’s hummingbirds toughing out the cold. This one guards the feeder while the other three work together to get time on it. With the freezing temperatures I have setup the feeder with heat trace, a wool sock and a micro fiber towel to keep it from freezing. So far it works well keeping the nectar at 4 degrees while it’s -12 outside.
