Heston may be referring to the 1886 earthquake in Charleston, South Carolina, on August 31, 1886. Estimated to have been 7.0, it destroyed or damaged almost all the buildings within the city, including many churches (pictures of which can be found online). The wrath of God is nothing compared to the shaking of the earth.
