She explained that she is a music teacher who has 4 hours of work per week. Sometimes she sleeps unsheltered and sometimes she uses a shelter or shares a tent. It is difficult to get a job when she cannot wear clean clothes to an interview. But, she does have a cell phone and uses the Georgetown Ministry Drop-in Center as address. She was thankful for the cold-weather gear we passed out.

Nika wanted to talk about religion and god. She was not sure if there is a god or not. We suggested that she might be an agnostic. But the word she identified most with was Freethinker. She does believe in a concept like Gaia, but does not consider it to be god--more like a gentle aspect of the earth. She thought gaia might be watching over the earth, but she wasn't sure. She explained that some shelters expect her to pray communally, which she is not inclined to do.

She let us take her picture and agreed to let us use it in the blog because she was unidentifiable. Homelessness carries a stigma, and she didn't wan't to be identifiable.Joseph Shaw

This lovely Stick-style, 1884 meeting hall was designed by architect Alfred Clas. The Freethinkers' congregation (or Freie Gemeinde) was formed by German immigrants in 1852, and meets to this day, one of the last such congregations in North America. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

A trip to the tiny Hill Country town of Sisterdale, about an hour northwest of San Antonio. Founded in the mid-1800's by German Freethinkers, Sisterdale is just a couple of houses and businesses along the side of the road with just a few dozen residents. The main attraction to the town is the Sister Creek Winery, located in the old cotton gin. Pictures taken Spring 2008. I plan on adding more detailed descriptions in the future.

Another Instance of Providential Neglect.

BLAINE. WASH, May 23, 1891.

WATSON HESTON. Dear Sir and Friend: I am a reader and admirer of THm TRUTH SEEKER, especially

of the illustrated portion of it. I inclose you a clipping from the Seattle Post Intelligencer of May 18th, containing a short account of two little girls lost in Nebraska. It at once reminded me of the poor woman found frozen in Dakota, whose motto was, " The Lord is my shepherd," etc. Such cases are stinging rebukes to the blind followers of an unreasonable, unmerciful Jehovah. With best wishes for your success, I am, Yours for the truth alone, JOHN W. MERRITT.

OMAHA, May 17. For a week the entire male population of Bedford, Thomas county, has been engaged in a search for two little girls of John Hammond, who were lost in the sand-hillls surrounding the town last Sunday. The children, one eight and the other six, went to visit their sister who live six miles north of Bedford, and about 5 o'clock they started home. They had to go about a mile and the road led through the sand-hills. The children lost their way in gathering flowers. The parents and neighbors searched the hills that night and Monday a general alarm was given. Thursday at noon the youngest child was found where she had fallen, completely exhausted and half-covered with sand, fifteen miles from where the children left the road. The little one was unconscious. She was soon restored, however, and said her sister had gone home. Search went on. It continued till this afternoon, when the dead body of the older child was found ten miles north of Dunning, Blaine county, fully seventy-five miles from where the children lost their way.

We're all born atheists. This young man is lucky enough to have a father who won't inculcate him into a particular sectarian tradition.
