Interpretive marker describing the engagement of September 25, 1861, between the Freestone Point battery and U.S. Navy gunboats USS Seminole and USS Jacob Bell.
Freestone Point Battery was built in September 1861 with four earthen emplacements. In addition to being one of the four principal blockade batteries that fired on ships attempting to run the blockade of Washington, Freestone Point Battery also was probably built early and in such a prominent location to distract the Union Navy from the building of the "strong" batteries, such as the one at Cockpit Point. Abandoned by March 1852 when other more substantial batteries were in operation.
