PEN Campaigns Manager Robert Sharp addresses the crowd in Traflagar Square

1,000+ people protested against the Government's controversial proposed Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill at Devonshire Green in Sheffield.

The proposed Bill includes proposals that would give police and the Home Secretary increased powers to stop protests on grounds of “serious annoyance or inconvenience” which if you’re a government minister could mean all of them.

It’s a serious erosion of civil liberties and democratic rights.

All dictatorships have seen a simple pencil as a powerful weapon, capable of making known their abuses and atrocities. Journalists, writers, poets, political rivals, while citizens and artists, for different parts of the world have suffered disrespect to the lives of others, and different ways of thinking. On the other hand, we respect the variety of ideologies and beliefs, we must remember that freedom of expression should not be transformed into the freedom to offend.

ROJ TV was awarded the Gladsaxe Freedom of Speech Price 1th May 2011. The rationale was that ROJ TV shows special courage to keep on sending Kurdish news and culture, though they are threatened on the lives of both Turkey and the USA. As part of the promotion of the former Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, as NATO Secretary General, the Danish state raised a case in court to get ROJ TV closed. This happens even though the Danish Radio and TV Board three times previously acquitted ROJ TV for all charges of breaking the law.

Ever since then, UNESCO as the UN agency with the mandate to promote freedom of expression (including freedom of the press) has been promoting these fundamental rights in every region of the world. The British High Commission marked the day with a reception for journalists and bloggers.

Zeitgleich finden in zahlreichen Städten in Europa vergleichbare Proteste statt.
