This is the river which my grandmother crossed from what is now the Czech Republic into Austria after the second world war. Her village was a German speaking village and after the war the residents were sent to camps and forced to work in the fields of farms that were now controlled by the Communist Party. After returning home (escorted by a solider) with a girlfriend to retrieve warmer clothes for the winter, she slipped away and crossed this river into Austria and freedom. She made several return trips through the nights to gather more goods, making sure to avoid soliders that would keep watch on the moon-lit fields from the darkness of forested areas.
