We were down in the French Pyrenees for me to ride in the Etape du Tour, a mountain stage of the tour ridden by around 10,000 riders from around the world. I've ridden the Etape six times, a tough but fantastic event. In 2010 we were staying locally to several stages of the tour and instead of a week riding in the mountains we spent time watching the professionals. This was the Port de Bales a 19 km pass that I had ridden a few days before. We were bussed in as close as possible, from there we walked into Mauleon - Barouse, bought provisions and set off up the pass. We found a lovely spot with a stream and were the tour caravan would have room to throw freebies out. We were with a couple from New Zealand who were with Sportstours aswell. We walked miles up the pass but what a fantastic day.
The photos aren't all that good, I've posted them because a lot of people are asking what the tour will be like in Yorkshire as it passes very close to us. To anyone who doesn't know, for the spectators it's about the "caravan" - 200 vehicles, many of them elaborate floats, that takes two hours to pass. These floats distribute millions of free gifts from sachets of detergent to replica jerseys and hats - which are the most sought after. At the stages we attended we acquired bags full, I was giving caps to kids and people on our trip who were in the wrong place.
The cyclists are almost irrelevant, they flash past, barely recognizable at the time, gone on minutes. The trick is to watch in a village with a big screen and plenty of bars with big screens ( they all have)
