I began photographing Detroit on New Year's Day, 2004. A few years laterr, this one neighborhood was getting a makeover and dilapidated homes were ripped down and these thin small houses were planted in replacement. They didn't really last long as not that long after being built, some were abandoned and vandalized. Already many have themselves been demolished.
May we revel in the beauty of nature in 2008, and decide to do something about it. I am dedicated to reducing my carbon footprint, and I am committed to shifting a good portion of my academic research to the issue of sustainability. One idea I am working on is a way to provide people information about the carbon footprint of each product they buy. Globalization of our supply chains has been good for large multi-national businesses economically, but we don't think about what all that transportation does to our environment. Just as we have movements to eat locally, so too will we begin to see a trend to supply locally (again).

I hope so much that the economy will improve , war will end and we all can find common ground.
This is Peace Arch on the Canada – USA border in sort of no-man's land . I used to go shopping to US often but not in few years. I just HATE how everyone is assumed to be a criminal , all the questions …. why , where , how long …. smile here is a big guy with a rubber glove. Last year I was returning on the long flight to Vancouver and … Canada Border Services gives me litany of questions and I politely answered few of them but when he started to ask me why I was traveling by myself only and so one - I just had enough and give him my 5 cents.
“
- Look ! It has be really long day , I have nothing to declare , all my paper work is in order , you can send me to be searched – I really don't care. I have 2 passports Canadian and Polish . Would you like to know what I was told by Polish Customs offices when I arrived in Poland ?
- What ?
- Welcome home ! … and than that fellow smiled . How difficult would it be for you guys to learn something like that !
- Go ! Just go !
and he gave me my passport

The Italianate building was constructed in the 1870s for Simeon Phillips, Jeweller, who was an Alderman with Dubbo Council and a Member of Parliament on the Free Trade ticket. He was defeated by the Labor Party in the 1890s. The words 'S. Phillips and Co' are included in relief on the centre of the top of the facade.
Simeon Phillips (1847 - 1925):
The death occurred on Sunday night of Mr. Simeon Phillips, at the age of 77 years.
Mr. Phillips was formerly a prominent figure in the public life of the State, and as member for Dubbo served in the Legislative Assembly for ten years. He was born at Parramatta, and as a young man settled in Dubbo, where he went into business as a jeweller. Shortly after his arrival there, he was elected an alderman, and he held a seat on the local council during the whole of the 30 years he spent in Dubbo. For three terms he was mayor of the town. After his first election as an alderman, he was never opposed for the position. He closely associated himself with all movements for the progress of the town, and was one of its most active pioneers. He was one of the few remaining members of the late Sir George Reid's Freetrade party. Mr. Phillips was closely connected with the Masonic Order, and was the founder of the lodge in Dubbo, and was later made a life member of it. He came to Sydney 15 years ago, and had been living in retirement here ever since.
He has left a widow, four sons (Messrs. S. D. Phillips, of Moree, M. L. Phillips, of the Malay States, and V. J. and A. Phillips, of Sydney), and two daughters, who are both living in Sydney.
The funeral took place at the Rookwood Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The chief mourners were Messrs. V. J., S. D., and Arthur Phillips. The funeral was also attended by many old friends and relations.

I took this picture because of the beautiful irony of it. You can't read the fish's quotes so well - the little fish says, "There is not justice in the world;" the middle fish says, "There is some justice in the world;" the big fish says, "This world is JUST." I love the picture - it makes a great political statement! I just think it's ironic that I found it on a Starbucks cup. :)
FedEx Express Canada was honoured to participate in a historic announcement today by delivering the first case of wine from another province to a private residence in Nova Scotia. Premier Stephen McNeil’s government announced legislation today that allows Nova Scotians to order wine directly from wineries in other provinces. Further, wineries throughout Nova Scotia are free to ship direct to consumers in those provinces which support the interprovincial shipping of wine. FedEx Express Canada lauds today’s announcement as a tremendous opportunity for Canada’s wine industry. Wine growers, wine drinkers, and our economy will all prosper when we practice free trade at home.

There are several ways an individual can become involved in protecting the global environment. Ironically, one such endeavour to "breathe green" resulted in 5000 canisters of CS gas being inhaled by 50,000 environmental and social activists, over 3 days of protests at the Quebec Summit in April, 2001. Treading lightly upon the fragile eco system we share sometimes requires that one stand firm in the face of corporate interests, for whom profits take precedence over environmental concerns, labour laws and human rights.
The impassioned woman in the foreground of this image attempts to communicate with riot squads guarding a breach in a security wall erected to shield the 'Free Trade Area of the Americas' summit leaders. The police respond with relentless volleys of teargas. The air becomes thick with acrid and highly toxic fumes.
In spite of personal risks, the protesters remain steadfast in their aims. If the pact between the FTAA leaders is ratified, so-called "Third World" countries risk losing sovereignty over areas such as the privatization of natural resources and the eradication of traditional farming, to make way for giant "First World" controlled agribusiness.
Tread lightly, but stand your ground.

Capitalizing on a growing sense of public uncertainty and fear, political deagogues and opportunists are now having a field day.
In the United States, they are attacking big government and environmentalists while calling for tax cuts, government down-sizing, the restoration of family values and individual responsibility, the elimination of restrictions on natural resource exploitation, increased defense expenditures, a tougher stand on crime, market deregulation and free trade.
Posing as conservatives committed to protecting ordinary people from the abuses of big government, they play simultaneously to the self-reliant, who are distrustful of government; to the economically burdened, who seek tax relief; to workers in resource-based industries, who fear environmental restrations; and to corporate interests, which are eager for greater freedom to increase profits by externalizing costs.
. . . Few of thgeir proposals will contribute to restoring the values of family, community and self-reliance. To the contrary, they allow the world's largest corporations the free to colonize still more of the world's markets and resources to the benefit of the already rich, shift tax burdens from those best able to pay to those least able to pay, and enlarge the police powers of the state to stem the resulting social unrest.
The opportunists and demagogues of corporate libertarianism have linked corporate money and power with populist interests to advance an agenda that results in placing corporate interests above human interests.
. . . The time is ripe for a realignment of political alliances, which is likely to come into full flower only when the true populists realize that their enemy is not only big central government but also the giant corporations that owe no allegiance to place, people, or human interest.
~ When Corporations Rule the World
www.pcdf.org/corprule/corporat.htm
www.desmogblog.com/when-corporations-rule-world-thanks-su...
With its ruling in Citizens United v. the Federal Election Commission (FEC), the Supreme Court has granted corporations even further unfettered access to destroy the fundamental Constitutional protections against corporate control of government. The Chamber of Commerce and ExxonMobil must be thrilled.
. . . Corporations, Wall Street and other special interests can now spend as much as they want on commercials and literature to call for the victory or defeat of federal political candidates.
Consider the power corporations already have over our democracy. For instance, the Finance, Insurance and Real Estate Industries spent over $132 million on political contributions to presidential candidates in the 2008 election. THat was one industry sector, one race, $132 million. Sure, it was a presidential race, so the stakes were high. But consider that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce spent $123 million lobbying the federal government in 2009, with no presidential race in sight. That was before the Chamber pledged to wage its "most aggressive" election fight ever in 2010, and put out the call to Big Business to pony up $100 million to do it. The Chamber already spends upwards of $300,000 per day on lobbying.
How many individuals could match that kind of spending power? And now that the limits to this largesse have been removed, how will We The People ever compete with corporations to choose our leaders?
. . . On the flip side of the coin, look at the elation of Republican corporate lapdogs like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY):
“For too long, some in this country have been deprived of full participation in the political process. With today’s monumental decision, the Supreme Court took an important step in the direction of restoring the First Amendment rights of these groups by ruling that the Constitution protects their right to express themselves about political candidates and issues up until Election Day. By previously denying this right, the government was picking winners and losers. Our democracy depends upon free speech, not just for some but for all.”
“First Amendment rights?”

Reflection in the Free Trade window yesterday afternoon. Beer lovers from around the UK gathered in Newcastle for an event known as Twissup, to drink, chat and visit the excellent Tyne Bank Brewery (tynebankbrewery.co.uk/) run by Mark and Julia, pictured. Thanks also to Mick (behind the bar) for putting on a stellar collection of ales.
The Tariff Reform League (TRL) was a British trade protectionist movement founded in July 1903 to advocate protection for British jobs and promote tighter trade cooperation within the British Empire. In doing so, the TRL sought to impose preferential tariffs against the import of foreign goods, especially from newly industrial countries such as Germany and the USA. At the same time the TRL promoted preferential trading with countries of the British Empire who would be excluded from the import tariffs and developed as an Empire-wide trading bloc.
Against the backdrop of trade recession, high unemployment and the rising economic powers of Germany and the USA, the TRL movement was organised by a breakaway faction within the Conservative Party under the leadership of Joseph Chamberlain. There was much popular support for the TRL and it remained at the centre of Edwardian politics in Britain. However, the TRL was strongly opposed by the Liberals and the opposing faction within the Conservative party who were in favour of open free trade with all countries. The main argument against TRL’s policies was based on the premise that import tariffs would lead to higher food prices, especially with regards to imported grain and emotionally labelling them as a ‘bread tax’. The issue had also split the Conservatives who set up the Unionist Free Food League as a counterweight to the TRL.
The TRL was staunchly supportive of protectionism and free trade within the British Empire but to succeed, it needed more national appeal. Arguments were put forward at rallies to convince the working classes of it’s merits and how it would contribute to their greater prosperity. At the same time the trade unions would need to be convinced and taken on board. Henry Page-Croft was instrumental in driving this and in giving the TRL a much broader class appeal that contributed to it’s success as a political movement.
The Liberals won a landslide electoral victory over the Conservatives in 1906 but despite this, Chamberlain and Croft continued to advocate for tariff reform. After 1910, the TRL suffered continual decline as funding decreased and the political will to drive the movement no longer had popular support. A general trade recovery made the issue seem less relevant to the public and interest waned as employment improved. Other political events had overtaken tariff reform as the burning issue, such as Home Rule for Ireland that proved politically divisive at the time. By the outbreak of WW1 in 1914, the significance of the TRL movement had ceased to be an important political issue and other reforms were affected too (eg; Home Rule shelved). The work of hundreds of TRL local branches throughout the UK was diverted away from tariff reform to helping the war effort by patriotic fund raising and moral-raising amongst the troops. Tariff reform became a dead letter and the TRL quickly dissolved as a political force once the war was over.
In the context of the time, the TRL was one of many tariff reform leagues and in addition, there were other political groups established to oppose them. The progress of WW1 lead to such profound social and political change that the circumstances within which the TRL developed were lost in the past. Despite this, the Conservative continued to cherish the policy of tariff reforms into the 1920’s, but events had overtaken them.
This very rare badge depicts a finely engraved image of the Rt. Hon. Jospeh Chamberlain (1836-1914) and it’s text states TO PROMOTE THE FUTURE SUCCESS OF THE EMPIRE – PROTECTION – RETALIATION being the aims and methods of the TRL. This badge may date to the early years of the TRL, before 1910.

Yes, it’s a bit heavy-handed, and it’s not the greatest exposure, but I included it here for the kid’s sweatshirt. It may be a little hard to read, but it’s a “God Bless America,” “Pray For Our Troops,” “Operation Desert Storm” sweat shirt from 1991. How the hell did this 14-year old piece of propaganda end up on an orphaned street boy in Nakuru, Kenya?
American second-hand clothing is all over Kenya. Strange stuff, too. I saw a Billy Joel concert t-shirt from 1993. An Alpha Phi sorority t-shirt commemorating an especially significant barbeque. A Philadelphia Renaissance Faire t-shirt. The funniest (and I still kick myself for not having the balls to take a picture) was a Kenyan man with a large pot belly wearing a “Caution: Baby Under Construction” t-shirt.
The clothing donated to second-hand stores in the U.S. and Canada is being sold--for a profit--in developing countries. Which would be fine--better than the landfill, I guess--but for the fact that this secondhand trade has devastated Kenya’s textile industry. Kenya once had a thriving textile sector. It also once had protective tariffs on imported clothing to aid that native industry. But the Kenyan government dropped those tariffs, probably as a result of pressure by the International Monetary Fund--a condition on aid in the servicing of Kenya‘s World Bank debt, no doubt--and in flowed the tattered Toronto Maple Leaf jerseys and the “Virginia is For Lovers” pullovers, and out flowed desperately needed Kenyan jobs. A fine example of how “free trade” often works out for developing countries.
I’ve heard that a documentary film is in the works exploring American secondhand clothing and the developing world. 247_4704
