A free press can, of course, be good or bad, but most certainly without freedom, the press will never be anything but bad.

Democracy is complicated in Europe with local & national interests competing with Union issues - a serious voter has a lot to weigh up. Estonia has carved out a niche as a startup hub and a friendly environment for foreign businesses. Its biggest innovation, however, lies in e-government. Citizens of this tiny Baltic nation can conduct almost every encounter with the state online. A digital-signature system makes official transactions a doddle. Armed with an ID card and a PIN, Estonians can vote, submit applications or sign contracts in seconds. Officials claim this lifts annual GDP by 2% while saving a mound of paperwork and creating opportunities for business. Estonians abroad lament the red tape involved in even simple tasks like applying for a driving licence. As Estonia assumes the rotating presidency of the EU’s Council of Ministers, it has been granted a pulpit from which to preach the digital gospel to the rest of Europe. Chief among Estonia’s plans is a proposal to expand the EU’s familiar four freedoms—the unhindered movement of goods, services, capital and people across borders—to include a fifth: data. digitisation can actually enhance security. (Other officials note the potential of blockchain technology to overcome gaps in trust.) But countries must want to change. Mr Ansip says that groups of EU governments may need to move ahead with data-sharing initiatives rather than waiting for all the laggards to agree.

Vested interests and distracted politicians have often limited Europe’s ambitions on digital matters.

ive been doing a lot of thinking about the US constitution and the freedom of the press, especially as it relates to the citizenry as the media. should blogging be given the same protections as commercial mainstream journalism? ive read many articles from the journalism camp that point to the unwashed and untutored masses in the blogosphere as unworthy of the mantle of Press and vaunt their own dedication to veracity and impartiality. That argument seems trite to me - the modern media has very little credibility as an independent and accountable arbiter of facts. Big Media has become a power center of its own and is driven by the same expediencies as any business. consider this: thomas paine who penned On Common Sense, was a blogger - in those days they were called pamphleteers - played a greater historical role in shaping the public discourse against British colonial rule than any partisan rag of its time. can a blog be part of the press? the constitution specifies no organizational or commercial requirements for the definition of the press. in fact, it first protects the right of the free speech by the citizenry, and then extends that coverage to the press as a necessary adjunct because speech without communication is specious and worthless. the protection of the press is derived from the right of citizen to speak and share their views and information without improper government restriction.

A great strength of democracy since the Second World War has been the development of monitoring organisations - bodies that put a brake on the abuse of power: corruption inquiries, NGOs, environmental bodies, independent media, among them. But those monitoring organisations have been under increasingly attack in many countries and authoritarian rule has begun to take hold where there had been hope of increased freedoms. Democracy must evolve and move forward and meet the challenges of an increasingly complex society. Technology must be part of the solution. www.public-democracy.com

Everyone has ideals. From the most insignificant aspect in our life, such as the perfect meal, to the most important, perhaps the perfect family, the perfect society, we all have ideals. We must all be idealists if we are to build a fairer sustainable society, and in our own small way follow the example of the heroes of social progress and evolution, idealists such as Abraham Lincoln or Dr. Martin Luther King, who showed society the way. We must hope for political leaders who have the strength to be the idealists of the future.

People craft their "public selves" and accompanying opinions to obtain social reward in the form of a positive image and response from their friends on social media. Social issues and critique become buzzwords or clickbait and lose their rebellious force. Memes and slogan's about desperate social issues are used to accumulate cultural capital and social rewards. In this process the public self and the social issues become commodities to achieve a personal reward and a sense of self-esteem, but rarely is any change achieved nor are the conditons associated with the soicial or political issue improved at all. This is the danger of social media slactivism.

Nothing much more needs saying. In countries and cultures with freedom of the press all thinking people seek equality. Life, all life (including all girls and women), is precious. No exceptions!

Individuals and companies all have to pay taxes for society to work. But some of the world’s wealthiest individuals and multinational companies, able to afford ingenious lawyers and accountants, have figured out ways to avoid paying enormous amounts of taxes. While ordinary people can get into serious trouble for evading payment of taxes, even facing jail in some countries, some companies seem to be able to get away with it as an unexpected windfall of gloabalism. Governments resort to taxing the population further to try and make up for the lost revenues from businesses that have evaded their share of repsonsibility for a sustainable fair society.

Sister Rally.....Indianapolis, IN

On Saturday 5 February 2022, I went to meet and photograph some of the activists staging their weekly protest at Piccadilly Circus against the continued detention and extradition proceedings against whistleblower and dissident journalist Julian Assange.

Nearly two weeks earlier on Monday 24 January, the High Court had made its decision regarding whether Julian Assange could request an appeal hearing on his extradition case at Britain's Supreme Court. As Julian Assange's fiancée, Stella Morris, left the building she smiled briefly, an immediate indication that there was at least some good news. She then gave a brief speech to a crowd of supporters and the press -

'Make no mistake,' she declared, 'We won today in court,' but then added, 'but let's not forget that every time we win, as long as this case is not dropped, as long as Julian is not freed, Julian continues to suffer.'

While Assange's defence team were granted the right to apply for a hearing at the Supreme Court, it will be up to Britain's highest court to decide whether to agree to consider his case. That decision on a possible Supreme Court hearing is expected sometime in the next two to three months.

Unfortunately, the remit of the appeal has been restricted to examining the United States' claimed legal promises on how Assange will be treated, rather than to the wider issues of freedom of speech, the CIA plot to assassinate him, the extent to which the evidence against him has obviously been fabricated or as to whether his treatment in Belmarsh Prison has amounted to torture.

On the last point, it is interesting to note that UN special rapporteur for torture, Nils Melzer, has already declared that the conditions Assange has been forced to endure at Belmarsh prison, including prolonged periods of solitary, constitute both arbitrary detention and torture.

If convicted in the United States on the charges of espionage for exposing US war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as other wrongdoing by the United States and other governments, he faces up to 175 years in prison.

A week after Britain's High Court decision Assange was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his fight for democracy by Martin Sonnenborn, a German MEP.
