Un tributo alla musica britannica, da sempre una delle più ispirate, e ispiranti. Qui sotto ho linkato una manciata di canzoni -solo quelle con 'clip ufficiale- di quel florido periodo in cui il Brit Rock si ergeva a contrastare l'ondata Grunge proveniente dall'America (ondata bellissima pure quella, figuriamoci).

At the Cafe Oto in North London., last Tuesday evening.
Marshall Allen is a phenomenally talented and creative multi-instrumentalist (saxophone, kora, keyboards, electronics). At 91 years of age his playing sounds as deep and fresh as ever. Although he has played with many of America's top jazz and improvising artists, most of his career he has been a mainstay of Sun Ra's Arkestra and since Sun Ra's passing to a world far beyond this one he has been the Arkestra's leader. He is currently visiting Britain with the Magic Science quartet. Their music ranges seamlessly through jazz improvisation, jungle rhythms and sounds of outer space. There is nothing as yet by the quartet on youtube so I've added a link to a Marshall Allen solo recorded last year:

I won't be able to post anything for much of the week - I'll spend part of thanksgiving in Montreal (where it is not thanksgiving). That's twice I will have spent thanksgiving day in a french-speaking city where it is not TG.

Da molto lontano, il temporalesco, echeggiante e smorzato battito era simile a quello del cuore di una madre che tranquillizza un bambino nel suo ventre di acciaio, calcestruzzo e fili elettrici. Noi siamo stati allevati in questo ventre, e qui, nel calore, nell’umidità e nell’oscurità di esso, siamo giunti ad accettare che siamo tutti uguali. Non solo per l’oscurità e per noi stessi, ma per la vera musica che batte dentro di noi e passa attraverso le nostre anime: siamo tutti uguali. E attorno ai 35Hz possiamo sentire la mano di un dio sul nostro dorso, che ci spinge avanti, ci spinge a spingere noi stessi a rinforzare il nostro pensiero, il nostro corpo e il nostro spirito. Ci spinge a girarsi verso la persona vicino a noi per stringere le mani e sollevarle, condividendo la gioia incontrollabile che proviamo creando questo magico cerchio che può, almeno per una notte, proteggerci dagli orrori, dalle atrocità e dall’inquinamento del mondo che sta di fuori. È in questo preciso momento, con queste premesse, che ognuno di noi è veramente nato. Continuiamo ad ammassare i nostri corpi nei clubs, nei depositi e negli edifici che voi avete abbandonato e lasciato senza alcuna ragione, e gli riportiamo vita per una notte. Una vita forte, deflagrante, che pulsa, nella sua più pura, più intensa, nella più edonistica forma. In questi spazi improvvisati, noi cerchiamo di liberarci dal peso dell’incertezza di un futuro che voi non siete stati capaci di stabilizzare e assicurarci. Noi cerchiamo di abbandonare le nostre inibizioni, e liberarci dalle manette e dalle restrizioni che avete messo in noi per la pace del vostro pensiero. Noi cerchiamo di riscrivere il programma che avete cercato di indottrinarci sin dal primo momento che siamo nati. Il nostro nemico è l’ignoranza. La nostra arma l’informazione. Il nostro crimine è violare e sfidare qualsiasi legge che voi sentite aver bisogno di utilizzare per porre fine all’atto di celebrare la nostra esistenza. Ma ricordate che mentre potete fermare un qualsiasi party, in una qualsiasi notte, in un qualsiasi città, in una qualsiasi nazione o continente di questo magnifico pianeta, non riuscirete mai spegnere il party intero. Non avete accesso a questo interruttore, non importa quello che pensate. La musica non si fermerà mai. Il battito del cuore non si spegnerà mai. Il party non finirà mai. Compilazzia sfornata allo scopo di diffondere un pò di sana musica elettronicheggiante, spesso sottovalutata dalle masse. Il più delle volte si tende infatti a considerare vera musica solo quella Rock, accusando la sua controparte Electro di essere "artificiale e plasticosa".
Nulla di più vero.
Solo che questo non dev'essere necessariamente un difetto, anzi. Oltre ad essere un suono che è più che mai figlio del suo tempo, il sintetico è anche un ottimo modo per amalgamare quante più influenze senza che queste cozzino tra loro. Inoltre la musica qua sotto è enormemente debitrice alla scena più chitarrosa, solo che tale influenza è incesellata in una forma canzone ballabile-orecchiabile, che, quando è ben curata, è veramente in grado di sorprendere. Provare per credere.
