American Federation of Teachers (AFT), AFT Massachusetts, the Lynn Teachers Union, and a group of high school students from Lynn Vocational Technical Institute SkillsUSA chapter held a free book giveaway in an effort to promote literacy and get more books in the hands of young people in their community.

St Thomas Library's wonderful display for this summer's South West Reading Passport Scheme, which is to record and review books from the seven continents with the aim of entering the review for the chance of winning a £300 book token and free suitcase.To create this display I visited several local charity shops in my lunch hour to search for an old (vintage) suitcase. I found one that had been thrown out so needed cleaning and drying out. Once dry I stuck on vintage travel labels. A quick look around the library to gather some relevant books and some suitable material from home and voilà a great display. We have already run out of our passports and have had to order more, so a great take-up so far.

L'idea è nata per soddisfare quella sete di libri che, a dispetto di quanto si possa dire nella società moderna, c'è e si fa sentire anche da parte dei più giovani, e contemporaneamente per recuperare in qualche modo il concetto di bene comune, qualcosa da condividere in un vero e proprio esperimento di socialità
È molto semplice partecipare: prendete un libro che avete in casa (anche acquistato appositamente se volete), scrivete un biglietto con il nome dell’iniziativa, lasciatelo in un posto pubblico ben visibile, come ad esempio una panchina, il bancone di un bar, un bancomat, alla fermata del pullman, in un giardinetto, davanti ad una scuola, etc etc. Chi trovera’ il libro potra’ prenderlo liberamente, leggere il messaggio che avete scritto e portarlo a casa, per gustarsi una buona lettura.
È semplicemente un’iniziativa simpatica per coinvolgere i cittadini monzesi e per invogliarli alla lettura.
