Driving around Marfa at dusk, we passed this woman offering up free advice. When I walked up a stranger was asking about her uncle who had gone missing several weeks prior.
He pulled up to talk to the Free Advice lady and started to give her advice. When I left they were talking about free will.
This is one of my favorite photos from NYC. I could have stayed in this park all day with my camera, people watching. When I saw this, I jumped up and down and did a little happy dance. No one cared. I love NY.
This is the first known photograph ever taken of The Free Advice Man. It was shot in the Spring of 1987 by photographer David Blau. The location is just East of Christopher St. Sheridan Square, on Washington Place. Jean-Pierre Ady Fenyo, The Free Advice Man (23), is wearing a dark blue beret. He is sitting on a metal folding chair next to another one. On the visible side of him are his umbrella, a wheely upon which he has his boom-box. A woman appears to be walking towards him in the background. There are also vehicles passing by on the adjacent street. The composition is artistically sophisticated and there is only one known surviving original print of this photo. The Free Advice Man hanged out with Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Quentin Crisp, Andy Kaufman and gave advice to countless celebrities, such as Woody Allen, Sarah Silverman, Michael Jay Fox, Bill Murray, Robin Williams, President Bill Clinton, President Jimmy Carter, and others...
