Had another great day of shooting the swallows at the lake - due to heavy rain and wind. Got several passes of this tree swallow - or I _think_ it was the same one, based on the state of the feathers in the wings and tail. it definitely seemed undeterred by the damage!

The frayed end of the bookmark was initially intended as an imperfect motive. On the screen of the camera, I have not seen the single, almost dropping hair. It was not until the development of the photo on the computer that I noticed it - a nice surprise

Das ausgefranste Ende des Lesezeichens war zunächst als unperfektes Motiv gedacht. Auf der Mattscheibe der Kamera habe ich das einzelne, fast schon herausfallende Haar nicht gesehen. Erst bei der Entwicklung des Fotos am Computer habe ich es bemerkt – eine schöne Überraschung.

Smile on Saturday - small tack sharp
This theme was a particularly tricky one to do with my cellphone. (I am in the 17th month of a 6 month self-challenge to do as much as I can with the iPhone's camera.) Sure do miss using my dear little canon870 which handles these admirably but really needs to go to its camera doctor.
With the iPhone camera, I probably took well over 50 shots of different small close-up things!! I could get a focus in the middle ground but I wanted more and better. Wanted to get foreground focus and background blur which on this one turned out to be, not surprisingly, the blue ribbon that the opaque gauzy one was paired with. I’ll post a couple of my “almost but not quite” possibilities soon. There are 9 other possibilities in my photostream, besides this one. .....Thank you to Renee who makes me think I can handle these challenges with a cellphone camera!!

Jasper turned 12 on Friday, July 21st. So we celebrated in grand style this weekend with toys, and treats and play. Such fun. A couple of new friends have joined the fray. The orange fella on the left is Mr. Gecko. And on the right is Mosely the Marvelous Moose, but his friends call him Moosey . Jasper is doing quite well for a 12-year-old. He maybe takes a few more naps but still has energy and playfulness.

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, “Great Blue Herons have specialized feathers on their chest that continually grow and fray. The herons comb this “powder down” with a fringed claw on their middle toes, using the down like a washcloth to remove fish slime and other oils from their feathers as they preen. Applying the powder to their underparts protects their feathers against the slime and oils of swamps.” Great Blue Herons hunt from shallow water, moving slowly and searching the water under the surface. They will eat whatever they can catch including frogs, snakes, crayfish, fish, small mammals and even other birds. They will snag smaller prey with their strong mandibles or can use their sharp, dagger-like bills to impale larger creatures.

Depending on which shoes I wear, my old jeans can be a bit too long, and they are frayed on the bottoms of the legs in places where they drag on the floor or ground.
