Thousands of Hongkongers march in defiance of anti-mask law, despite metro shutdown, heavy rain, tear gas
Masked demonstrators joined unauthorised protests on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon on Sunday, defying a new emergency law banning facial coverings at protests.
The protests, now in their 18th week, drew tens of thousands to the streets despite heavy rain and the closure of key MTR stations.
But, by late afternoon, tear gas had been deployed near government headquarters in Admiralty and Wan Chai to clear demonstrators, whilst riot police sought to disperse crowds in Kowloon Tong.
The anti-mask law was enacted by Chief Executive Carrie Lam via emergency legislation and came into effect on Saturday.
Protesters nevertheless wore medical masks, Halloween masks, makeup and even facial treatment masks on Sunday.
Those who violate the new law a maximum punishment of a year in prison or a fine of HK$25,000.
Netizens called for a turnout of “three million” on Sunday as a show of strength. The largest demonstration since the movement began in June had a turnout of approximately two million, according to organisers.
All lanes of Hennessey Road and Yee Wo Street were occupied by protesters as they carried a large banner reading “Hong Kong police attempt to murder.” Another read “our gov is killing us.”
A 14-year-old and an 18-year-old were shot by police this week. The force said the incidents were appropriate and justified as self-defence.
Throughout the day, demonstrators built makeshift barricades and targetted at least one branch of Starbucks.
Branches of the coffeeshop have been vandalised in recent weeks after the daughter of the local franchisee’s owner – the Maxim’s caterers founder – spoke against the movement at the United Nations.
Mainland-owned businesses and banks were also vandalised.
In an SMS, Hong Kong police appealed to residents to remain alert and remain at home: “Unauthorised public events expected today will likely cause violence & disruptions. Please stay alert, avoid going out & check for police updates,” it read.
Large-scale peaceful protests against a bill that would have enabled extraditions to China have evolved since June into sometimes violent displays of dissent over Beijing’s encroachment, democracy and alleged police brutality.

Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge located at 400 South Meridian Rd. in Oklahoma City,OK. The restaurant was demolished by the mid early 1990s and replaced with a new building occupied by an independently restaurant operating under the name Louie's Grill and Bar. The motor lodge which opened in the mid to late 1960's has continued to carry the HJ name despite the numerous alterations required over the years. The majority of the changes occurred during the time Cendant owned the HJ name and required many franchisees to make drastic alterations to the properties or drop the HJ brand (which many properties did to avoid unnecessary renovations). The Cendant Corporation made it a point to cover the gate lodge buildings along with the entire exterior of the complexes to be covered with stucco. This motor lodge is a prime example of the franchisee trying to keep the HJ brand going yet clearly enduring a bunch of unnecessary architectural modifications over the years.
A longstanding Ford franchisee, who have recently gone from a full franchise to authorised repairer as Ford makes deep cuts in it's retail network. Note the petrol pumps on the pavement!
◄Waffle House®, Inc. is an American restaurant chain with more than 2,100 locations in 25 states in the United States. Most of the locations are in the South, where the chain is a regional cultural icon. Waffle House is headquartered in an unincorporated part of Gwinnett County, Georgia, near Norcross. The first Waffle House opened on Labor Day weekend in 1955 at 2719 East College Avenue in Avondale Estates, Georgia. That restaurant was conceived and founded by Joe Rogers Sr. (1919–2017) and Tom Forkner (1918–2017). Rogers started in the restaurant business as a short-order cook in 1947 at the Toddle House in New Haven, Connecticut. By 1949, he became a regional manager with the now-defunct Memphis-based Toddle House chain, then he moved to Atlanta. He met Tom Forkner while buying a house from him in Avondale Estates. Rogers's concept was to combine the speed of fast food with table service with around-the-clock availability. He told Forkner, "...You build a restaurant, and I’ll show you how to run it," recalls Tom Forkner.
Forkner suggested naming the restaurant Waffle House, as waffles were the most profitable item on the 16-item menu. The fragile nature of waffles also made the point that it was a dine-in, not a carry-out, restaurant, but it confused patrons as to meal availability other than breakfast.
Rogers continued to work with Toddle House, and to avoid conflict of interest, sold his interest to Forkner in 1956. In 1960, when Rogers asked to buy into Toddle House, and they refused, he moved back to Atlanta and rejoined Waffle House, now a chain of three restaurants, to run restaurant operations. Shortly after Joe returned full-time, Tom followed suit and left Ben S. Forkner Realty.
After opening a fourth restaurant in 1960, the company began franchising its restaurants and slowly grew to 27 stores by the late 1960s, before growth accelerated. The company is privately held and does not disclose annual sales figures, but says they serve 2% of the eggs used in the nation's food-service industry. The founders limit their involvement in management, and as of 2013, Joe Rogers Jr. was CEO and retired late 2013, and Bert Thornton is President.
>>Waffle House® restaurants have offered the unbeatable combination of good food with outstanding service since 1955. This combination has made it a beloved icon of the South for the past 60 years. Waffle House® restaurants provide a unique dining experience where regular customers are greeted by name and enjoy social interaction with their servers and other customers. All food is prepared fresh, cooked to order and served on real china in a kitchen that is out front and in full view.
The Waffle House® menu offers a variety of foods, with a breakfast focus and features signature meals along with America’s best brands. The taste, quality and portions of the meals ensure customers receive a great value for their money. Menu favorites include Bert’s Chili and Lib’s Patty Melt along with hashbrowns served eight different ways.
Each restaurant is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and quality is consistent from location to location. Customers enjoy sit-down table service with the speed of delivery found at fast-food establishments.
Headquartered in Norcross, GA, Waffle House® operates more than 1,500 restaurants company and franchisee owned. Waffle House® holds the title as the world’s leading server of waffles, omelets, T-bone steaks and more. The combination of great food, fast service and friendly experience makes Waffle House® restaurants truly a Unique American Phenomenon.

I THINK THERE IS ONLY ONE former RED BARN IN THE WORLD that still closely resembles the ORIGINAL FORMAT and FACADE. Outside and inside colour scheme.
And it is THIS ONE in Mississauga, Ontario, CANADA.
It has only a few changes (different seating, no Red Barn ads, different wall paint, etc.) The enclosed tunnel to the washrooms was a later (but not too late) addition.
YOU KNOW… AS I WALKED UP to this MR. SUB, just for a second, for me, it becomes a RED BARN!
I have ancient and fond memories of waiting in the wintertime, in our Chrysler Windsor, looking up at the Rexdale Red Barn’s hayloft door, way above me, while my dad went inside to get a barrel of "dignified" chicken.
Red Barn chicken was like KFC, just way better!
The Red Barn used a Henny Penny Pressure Cooker made exclusively for them, and the chicken pieces were bigger than KFC’s (like Mary Brown’s today).
And brace yourselves, folks, you could order THE KEEL of the chicken! Most today have no idea what that even is! And I ain’t gonna’ say …
Well, here goes. I’m going in.
I immediately request a Big Barney, 9 pieces of dignified chicken, and some keels.
The owner, Gus, tells me I need to find a time-machine … because this is a MR. SUB now.
Well, it was worth a try.
Gus is good-natured, and I’m told I'm not the only one who has come into the restaurant, over the years, asking about the Red Barn, so he has a few facts ready for me.
This (former) MISSISSAUGA RED BARN opened in 1965!
The first one in Canada opened in 1963, in Scarborough.
The Mississauga outlet closed in 1975.
It re-opened briefly in the same year as a "Goodies". They had kept all the Red Barn food prep equipment but, sadly, couldn't make it work.
Then it re-opened again, in 1975, as a Mr. Sub.
THANKFULLY, the RED BARN facade is still going strong, for 50 years+ and was blended in with the MR SUB facade which uses almost the same colour scheme!
ATTENTION AMERICANS! If you get a chance, try out a MR. SUB in Canada!
Preferably THIS ONE, for the old-time Red Barn nostalgia!
SUBWAY makes some great subs … but YOU CAN'T BEAT a MR SUB 12" ASSORTED with their trademark "secret sauce”. YOU JUST CAN'T beat that sub!
ALSO, the MR SUB Louisiana Pepper Chicken sub … IS, will always be … out-of-this-world! And no one else has it!
AND ONLY in Canada, YOU'ALL!

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO THE RED BARN RESTAURANT CHAIN?
AS EVERYONE IN CANADA knows … it isn't always THE BEST that wins out!
THINK, CANADA'S Avro Arrow!
The absolute best! But the programme gets scrapped by Canada's Conservative government!
THINK, CANADA'S homegrown, and Howard Hughes favourite, the C-102 Avro Jetliner!!
Perfect AND 7 years before the Boeing 707!!
Aircraft orders on the table, programme and prototype, scrapped by Canada's Liberal government!!
NOW THINK, the RED BARN fast-food chain!
IT AIN'T OVER, 'till it's over.
Well, it’s been over for AVRO CANADA for 55 years.
And its just as over for THE RED BARN RESTAURANT.
IT'S BEEN LIGHTS OUT for the Red Barn System (Canada) Ltd. for 35 years.
Most corporation stores and franchises closed, even before that.
At the time, in the early 60s, the Red Barn was WAY AHEAD of the fast-food competition (McDonalds, A&W, Arby's, KFC, Burger King, and Wimpy's).
Red Barn advertising showcased muppet-like figures in their ads (created by Sesame Street's Jim Henson) long before McDonalds created (rather copied) the concept when they introduced the Hamburgler years later.
Red Barn buildings had that distinctive barn shape appearance.
There was a barn right in the middle of the city or suburbia!
Every kid alive could spot one a mile or two away!!
And when you ordered chicken and fries it came in a BARN-SHAPED container!
And yes, there was the unforgettable barn design painted red and white.
The building structure details included glazed bright red bricks (on the exterior and the interior), a high front barn peak, complete with a hayloft door, and the roof was topped off with two rooster weathervanes. The dining area was small and there was a large country scene mural above the order counter.
The innovative Red Barn Chain was the FIRST to have a salad bar. Then a sundae bar.
Hey, Ponderosa, were you taking notes?
The Red Barn not only made hamburgers, but they made fried chicken!
McDonalds still doesn't have fried chicken!
Almost a 60 years later—
The RED BARN made their fried chicken specially, in a closed-top Henny Penny Fryer!
The Red Barn's fried chicken was also way better than KFC's and was even cut up differently than the competition, so you could order the chicken's KEEL as a piece! And everybody did — just 'cause they could — and jus' cause it was the best part of the chicken!
Back in the day, what the Red Barn offered the local kid was far superior, and their variety was far ahead of the competition, I mean McDonalds didn't get ice cream until the late 80s! Twenty years after the Red Barn! And remember they still don't have fried chicken!
The Red Barn chain got sold early, and the original vision was rapidly lost.
And on top of that, corporate advertising evaporated.
One thing that made McDonald's king of fast-food world was their relentless advertising on kid's shows!
The Red Barn had better fare… BUT McDonald’s had more frequent advertising.
AND, in the end, in a move that was never fully comprehended by the franchisee owners … the chain was finally abandoned by its last hospitality owners, the Motel 6.
Franchisee licences were allowed to elapse and then the RED BARNS were legally done.
They couldn't even keep the famous Red Barn name, or look.
MOTEL 6 only wanted the Servomation food business, which was a widespread vending machine and office refreshment company.
That's all they cared about.
The Red Barn was a separate entity BUT under the Servomation umbrella, having been acquired by Servomation, much earlier.
Here's how it went down.
RED BARN TIMELINE
Founded: 1961
Founders: Don Six, Martin Levine, and Jim Kirsch
Owners:
1961 - 1963 Don Six, Martin Levine, and Jim Kirsch
1963 - Late 60s Richard O. Kearns (Foodcraft Management)
Late 60s - Late 70s Servomation
Late 70s - 1986 Motel 6 acquires Servomation and Red Barn.
The Motel 6 executive decides not to promote or advertise for the Red Barn chain, and to allow the 300+ Red Barn franchisee licences to lapse!
Imagine being an franchisee/owner in those circumstances.
If ever there was a time to lawyer up, that was it.
Full support to NO support.
Where do you get the benefits of volume purchasing of meat, poultry, fish and vegetables?
You don't.
Who co-ordinates advertising and promotions for 300+ North American outlets?
No one. There is none.
And by 1986, as the last 15 year license lapses, the RED BARN chain is declared defunct.
Many Red Barn franchisees immediately go under.
Any former RED BARNS left, go independent, with a name change.
Soon, these too, are done.
A handful (10) regroup under "The Farm" banner in Ohio.
The fare is classic "Red Barn" but is now rebranded, "The Farm".
The Big Barney hamburger becomes the Farm Boy. The Barnbuster becomes the Farmbuster. You, get the picture.
The fried chicken is STILL "dignified" the Red Barn way … because it is pressure cooked.
And, yes, you could still order keels! I most definitely remember the RED BARN deep-fried keels from my childhood.
Nobody else fries it that way. But, hey thanks for comin' out KFC, you have a strong second place finish alongside the former Red Barn.
WANT TO TRY RED BARN FOOD?
In 2016, there is ONLY ONE RED BARN left.
That one is in Racine, Wisconsin. It’s called THE FARM.

This used to be a Steak N Shake restaurant, however after Steaks of Virginia
(SnS franchisee for Virginia restaurants) was losing money from their
restaurants, Burger Busters (who owns Steaks of Virginia) turned some of them
into Taco Bells.
Here is the same shot before it was Taco Bell.

Pictures from April 15th, 2015. There was very little left and I don't recall seeing the store open anymore after this. This was either the last day or very close to it. The items were 80% off despite what the signs said.
This store closed around April 15th. There are some Sears Appliance & Hardware stores open. The franchisee of the Northeastern Ohio ones shut most of his stores.

The "Entrance" and "Exit" neon over the door is another holdover from Ryan's.
This Golden Corral was closed from February 14th to May 1st, 2018 and has since reopened. These photos were taken during the 2 1/2 month closure of the restaurant. The previous franchise owner closed the restaurant and it was later reopened by a different Golden Corral franchisee.
It was peak dinnertime on a saturday when I took these photos; a bunch of cars kept pulling into the lot and turning around.
Also of note, is that this restaurant was previously a Ryan's steakhouse; basically the signs were just swapped out and it became a Golden Corral! The exterior mostly still the Ryan's look (except for the plug on the front and over the entrance). I didn't get a good look inside, but it appeared the buffet was still located in the middle of the restaurant, just like Ryan's. Ryan's and Golden Corral are similar enough concepts where most people won't notice though.

The inaugural Flybe service from Newquay arriving Runway 24. Excellent to see the return of Flybe, who operated weekly summer services to Jersey for several years after a 30 month hiatus. This arrival should mark the start of a new long association with the airport. In addition to this new thrice weekly Newquay service, Stobart Air operating as a franchisee of Flybe will be dedicating 2 ATR72s to London Southend Airport this summer.
Having launched a Karrier-based Roving Eye TV outside broadcast vehicle in BBC colours in May 1959, Dinky Toys gave the ITV network equal time three years later. In the colours of ITV franchisee ABC (Associated Broadcasting Company), the refreshed casting substituted a revolving dish for the original cameraman. The price was also reduced, the new model costing just 7/9d compared with the original’s 8/3d.
ITV was launched in 1955 as a private-sector alternative to the state BBC TV. It was organised on a regional franchise basis, with Granada for example holding the franchise for much of Northern England. ABC Television held the franchise for weekend broadcasting in the Midlands and the North. A revision of franchises in 1968 marked the end of ABC TV, but the company duly merged with Rediffusion to become Thames Television.

Unfortunately there isn't too much information online, but this is the world's largest Arby's restaurant. The franchisee for the Arby's restaurants in the Richmond metropolitan area seems to have a passion for having amazing looking buildings, and my goodness do they do a top notch job! It is hard to find an Arby's restaurant in Richmond that doesn't look amazing, but this one runs to the top of the list and the decor is incredible.
I had a hard time figuring out what the theme was, but along every window is a quote from Will Rogers, which after doing some research was a Cherokee citizen which explains the totem pole and the western decor.
There is similar, but smaller location in Short Pump that I need to visit. Next time I find myself out there, I will absolutely stop in!
Former Howard Johnson's Restaurant located at 7590 Clayton Rd. in Richmond Heights,MO. The franchisee of this location ceased their affiliation with HJ in 1985 and renamed their establishment Layton's Restaurant. The Giessow family had operated this HJ location since 1959 up until their retirement on June 30th 2004. The Giessow's kept this property remarkably intact and retained numerous holdovers from HoJo's up until the day the closed the restaurant. The orange roof was removed in the late 1980s and the exterior was slightly altered soon thereafter. The interior of the restaurant retained numerous original fixtures dating back to when the restaurant opened for business back in 1955! I had a talk with a landscaper working on the property who said there has been a bitter family dispute over the land where the once successful restaurant is located. He stated that his company comes by every week to keep the property maintained and that the parking lot was repaved in 2017 yet the restaurant is still vacant. It is remarkable and somewhat eerie to see such an intact HJ property sitting empty yet fully intact with the daily specials still written on a whiteboard and even a few original HJ Ice Cream dishes on the dairy bar!
Before visiting this abando i didn't even know we had Denny's Restaurants in Australia. I'm a big child at heart so as soon as i heard Denny's restaurant i thought of the Santa Claus movie and had to head in for a look!
This former Denny's site was opened in the early 1980's although the Denny's chain of restaurants didn't take off to well in Australia and by 1989 the Denny's Australian franchise had been sold off to UK brewing company and was re-branded as The Keg. By the end of 1995, with only 16 of the 70 targeted Keg restaurants where established, this restaurant closed and the brand disappeared.
Denny's (originally know as Danny's Donuts) on the other hand had built itself a well known brand in other parts of the world, especially America where it currently has around 1700 stores open. Denny's is now known for always being open and serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner around the clock. Denny's does not close on holidays or nights, except where required by law. Many of the restaurants are located in proximity to freeway exits, bars, and in service areas. Denny's established in 1953 started franchising in 1963, most Denny's restaurants are now franchisee-owned.
While Denny's has made a name for itself in parts of the world for its well known brand and food, there has also been some controversy around the franchise and has been involved in a series of discrimination lawsuits involving food servers denying or providing inferior service to racial minorities, especially black customers.

This is the view from the top of the footbridge steps using the equivalent of a 75mm lens. Since the footbridge is on the London side of the road, you don't need any extra height to get pictures, but the level crossing lights and signage are in the picture. This has been cropped by a very small amount, just to remove the top of someone's head!
Like the 455s, the five-car 458s are soon to disappear. Thirty 458s were built by Alstom (at the former Metro-Cammell works at Washwood Heath in Birmingham) between 1998 and 2000 as four-car units (and originally carried the white "long-distance" version of South West Trains livery, as first applied to the class 442 "Wessex Electrics" fleet (and on which Stagecoach's second bus livery was based). Following the Southern Railway / Region classification system, they were sometimes known as 4-JUP.
About fifteen years later, when the eight Gatwick Express eight-car class 460 "Juniper" EMUs were taken out of service (Gatwick Express no longer being a franchise in its own right), a fleet of thirty-six five-car class 458/5s ("5-JUP") was created for SWT (six of the 460s were reduced to five cars, with the removed centre cars and the non-driving cars from the two remaining units being used to strengthen the four-car units; the four remaining driving cars were scrapped). They underwent a major refurbishment, including changing the cab fronts and fitting inter-unit gangways, and appeared in South West Trains blue "outer suburban" livery, as depicted here. The franchise changed hands in August 2017 - only a year after the conversion programme had been completed - and the new franchisee announced it planned to replace the 458s. However, in 2021 it was instead decided to reduce them back to four-car formation (as class 458/4) and scrap the removed cars, a process which began during 2022 and also involved another refurbishment. At the time this photo was taken, no 458/4s had entered passenger service, with testing having only started during autumn 2023.

Here are my first impressions without the benefit of asking the museum curator for answers.
Colonel Sanders is wearing the colonel suit and tie. He has a business card from Corbin, Kentucky with the business name "Kentucky Fried Chicken". Kentucky Fried Chicken's first franchise was Utah's Harman's Cafe in August of 1952. Franchisee Pete Harman helped Sanders pick out a suit that emphasized the stereotypical southern gentility — albeit Harland Sanders was born and raised in Indiana. After thinking about Utah Fried Chicken, Sanders and Harman decided fried chicken was best branded as a southern thing. As I recall, Sanders showed up in Salt Lake City and franchisee Harman put him to use on a float in a parade to advertise his newly branded restaurant. They had to quickly buy the right suit and found a white one that fit the southern hospitality image. Frankly, Sanders' white suit reminds me of an antebellum plantation owner. Anyhow, that white suit stuck and the Colonel was seen wearing it during publicity appearances since. So, I'm assuming this grey suit is before that early Utah parade. Yet, Sanders hair is white. He's sporting his now iconic goatee and mustache. So, maybe the dark business suit is just Sanders trying to look like a businessman on his business card.
But then there is the time frame of that phone number.
From my late 20th Century and early 21st Century perspective, this looks like a phone number that would just be usable around Corbin, Kentucky. But then the Kentucky title of Colonel is used for ambassadors of the state, which makes me think this a card is for the rest of the country. Ah, if I remember my old movies correctly, back then direct dialing from coast to coast wasn't easily done. In the 1920s, a Louisvillian would crank up the phone, and say, "Operator, get me Corbin 1580" for a "station-to-station" call. AT&T invented the area code and ten digit direct dialing system in 1947. So, without an area code for the central office or without a prefix code, this looks to be a pre-1947 number in which an operator would need to be called in order to talk with someone in the station that handled phone numbers around Corbin, which by the way is in the foothills of Appalachia, Eastern Kentucky.
The small chicks under the brand name are interesting. I wonder how long that lasted.
Still, this business card info looks awkwardly minimal. There's no address. There's no area code or prefix. There is no position listed in the company for Sanders — e.g. president, owner, founder, etc. I'm assuming minimal gives the perspective of being very important, which in fairness, he was but less so back in the 40s.
I'll need to research this.

Chuck E. Cheese's #3142 (15,000 square feet)
5 Town Center Way, Hampton Towne Centre, Hampton, VA
Opened in May 2002
The store overall looks similar to how it did when it opened in 2002, and it did likewise during my 2013 visit. But changes have definitely taken place when you really start to look for them. First off, the circular warm lights across the ceiling were replaced with fluorescent tubes in rectangular boxes. The place as a whole looks much brighter now, which is a negative for me as I liked the dimmer ambiance of the past. The carpeting was also completely replaced, an understandable move as I'm sure the original carpet was getting worn out after years and years of foot traffic, plus you know how messy kids can be! Lastly, all the original booths were replaced with these newer ones featuring partitions with rounded tops. Again, I'm sure those original booths had been well worn out as well.
Now, let's talk about the game floor. I remember it being much fuller and more cramped in the past, but nowadays the amount of games themselves seems to have decreased thus the floor feels a lot more spaced out, for better or worse (definitely more beneficial now in the social distancing era though). Games aside this is also due to the removal of the Skytubes a few years ago, which filled things in significantly. This to me was a huge loss; I understand the sanitary conditions of equipment like that, but man, those tubes were one of the best aspects of CEC. I loved them as a kid, as now I realize how much fun it was to crawl through 'em and release energy. What a shame. And on the topic of games the store switched from the iconic tokens to the game pass system à la Dave & Buster's earlier this year; this was due to a switchover from franchisee to corporate ownership. I still think there's fun to be had at CEC, but I dunno, things feel a little more sterile here now and not as exciting as in the past. But then again I'm not a kid anymore so what do I know?!
Depending on where you live in the country, you either see a Big Boy all the time (which will make what I say sound rediculous), or you never see one. As a Tennesseean, I'm in the latter category.
I thought about using this space to tell the Big Boy Franchisee story, but I decided it's way too convoluted. Instead, if you're really interested see the Wikipedia article.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Boy_(restaurant)
Unlike McDonalds where every McDonalds is a McDonalds. There were different Big Boys depending on where you lived in the country. In Tennessee, there was Shoney's Big Boy up until I was 7. Then, the Big Boy statue was taken away, and the restaurant became just Shoney's. That was about three decades ago.
Each Big Boy locale has a Big Boy statue out front. Also, each Big Boy statue is holding a Big Boy hamburger, which is the flagship menu item. (As a point of reference the McDonald's Big Mac was created as direct competition.)
On the weekend I traveled to Lexington, KY, I made it a point to stop at a Big Boy since I hadn't eaten at one in nearly three decades. From the To Go menu, I wanted to order one of everything to make up for lost time. Since that was impractical, instead I went for the Big Boy burger and the Swiss Miss. (In retrospect, perhaps I should have gotten the Brawny Lad just because.)

Burger King #5563 (2,666 square feet)
1360 Armory Drive, Southampton Shopping Center, Franklin, VA
This location was built and opened in 1987. It closed on October 24th, 2008, due to the franchisee neglecting to pay meal taxes to the city, then was renovated and reopened under new ownership in 2009.
Founder Clarence Saunders started the first self-service grocery store in 1916 in Memphis, Tennessee. Shortly afterwards, he franchised the concept. It took off nationally like wild fire. Its innovative business format was franchised, and those franchises were supervised.
This is taken for granted nowadays but back in those days think of the country store that is seen in Western movies, in which a customer would tell a clerk what item they wanted and the clerk would retrieve it for the customer. One could buy on credit in these neighborhood grocery stores. But not at Piggly Wiggly. Customers grabbed their own products, where only cash was accepted at the cash register at the end of the aisles. How revolutionary!
That innovation was from a man who only had two years of school education.
Saunders then took his franchising company public in 1920. However, a hard-hit franchisee would cast shade on the financial soundness of the franchisor. That would cause Saunders heartache on the stock market. In 1923, what would nationally be known as the "Piggly Crisis" happened. He created a stock corner to stop nay-saying short sellers. In the end, Saunders and his Memphis backers owed a lot of money. He lost ownership in the company that he founded.
To give some perspective on the pioneering nature of Piggly Wiggly, compare it with the earliest restaurant franchising chain, A&W. It started its first eatery in 1919, nearly three years after Piggly Wiggly. A&W began to franchise in 1926, with its branded frosted root beer float mug that came out of a freezer as its focus as opposed to adherence to a strict restaurant business format. That would come decades later.

Opened December 22nd, 1997, rebuilt in 2007
One of the other eyebrow McD's in Hampton I visited last week had just been remodeled, so it's only a matter of time before this one gets the same treatment. Luckily for now it still has the same décor that it had when it was built back in 2007, and it's hard to believe that now this look is considered "dated". Even though I understand why the eyebrows are disliked but at least these earlier ones still had interesting interiors (that other Hampton location had a similar look, which makes sense since both are operated by franchisee Giaimo Management). Asides from the two Hampton locations I mentioned there's a 2008 built eyebrow location in Newport News that just got remodeled, and about three others elsewhere that were remodeled in 2013 and most likely just had self-order kiosks installed. I'll be getting to those very soon!
A new state-of-the-art fast food restaurant opened in October 2014 on a prime location along the 2 x 5 lane highway A2 between Utrecht and Amsterdam at exit 5 Breukelen next to train station Breukelen and not far from the famous hotel-restaurant Valk with the chinese roof.
The franchisee is Leen van 't Hoog who has 2 other McDonald's restaurants; Maarssen and Huis-ter-Heide. It was this franchisee who opened the first McDonald's with Drive-Thru in the Netherlands back in 1987 (McDonald's Huis ter Heide).
This restaurants features a double lane Drive-Thru, loading points for electric cars (free to use for guests), a Magic Table, a balcony terrace and the Made For You system is implemented in combination with EasyOrder terminals.

Yes, this is a tree trimmed in the shape of a bull, and those are real cactuses.
McGill’s reveals plans for new £25m Glasgow depot
McGill’s Group has announced plans for a new £25 million depot in central Glasgow as part of future expansion ambitions.
The operator has this week bought a 6.55-acre brownfield site in the Tradeston area and says the investment could deliver as many as 850 jobs.
McGill’s adds that operations at its existing sites will not be affected when the new site is operational – expected by the end of 2026.
The expansion will partly support a planned tripling of its coach fleet to around 300 vehicles as the business looks to boost its private hire interests, cement its relationship with FlixBus, and build up its new Loch Lomond Travel venture.
In addition, the site on Kilbirnie Street, 1.5 miles from the city centre, which will include electric charging infrastructure, is well located if plans for bus franchising in Strathclyde come to fruition, says McGill’s.
For a company that was dead against franchising in Greater Glasgow, it seems that McGill’s have accepted that is a increasing likelihood that it’ll go ahead. Hence the purchase of this land.
Couple of issues with this. Firstly the coaches. Whilst I know McGill’s are a major part of FLiXBUS’s operations it would take a massive expansion of this as well as the Loch Lomond Travel business to be upwards of 300. I’m not disputing this, it just seems a massive increase in a short space of time. Also I’m not sure about the claim that this wouldn’t impact their existing depots. The depots location means it could easily be used for services that run into Glasgow such as the 3 service to Neilston, seen here run by J5025 (SG71OTL) from McGill’s Johnstone depot.
However I suspect that the depot’s real purpose to be a prime base for any Glasgow franchisee. This would give McGill’s a base for any win of a franchise which is odd, given all the noise the company made about franchising when it was proposed. Maybe they’ve changed their minds. Or perhaps they’ve seen the way the wind is blowing. Either way, it’s a statement of intent.
This section of the Sydney Light Rail network, on the approach to the Wentworth Park stop, puts me in mind of the approach through deep cutting to Liverpool Lime Street station. The tram is one of four CAF Urbos 2 units operated by the franchisee, Transdev, and saw previous use on the Velez-Malaga line in Spain, between 2006 and 2012.
