Vatheia with its grand towers behind which the family defenders fought against invaders like the Turks, pirates and fellow Maniates (their neighbours).
20th century urbanization drove most inhabitants to the big cities but recent restorations have saved some castle houses to reveal a hitherto forgotten corner of the beautiful and "wild" Mani region.
and a great man is the most precious possession of any people. The Irish who have fought steadily through hundreds of years and who are fighting now, have been inspired from the first by the memory and example of the man whom they look upon as their greatest leader and their patron saint :-)

The Battle of Tara was fought between the Gaelic Irish of Meath, led by Máel Sechnaill mac Domnaill, and the Norse Vikings of Dublin, led by Amlaíb Cuarán. It took place near the Hill of Tara in Ireland in the year 980. The battle was a devastating defeat for the Vikings and led to the Irish regaining control of Dublin.
On one side there was a Norse army from the Kingdom of Dublin supported by troops from the Hebrides, which was commanded by a son of Olaf Cuaran named Ragnall. The other side was led by Máel Sechnaill mac Domnaill, who had recently come to power as head of the southern Uí Néill. The latter's force consisted of troops from his home province of Mide (the Kingdom of Meath), probably with strong support from troops from Leinster and Ulster.
The battle ended in a devastating defeat for the Norse of Dublin. Olaf abdicated and died in religious retirement in Iona. Dublin was besieged by the victorious Máel Sechnaill, who forced it to surrender slaves and valuables, as well as give up all its prior claims to Uí Néill-held territory. In the following decade, Dublin was more or less under the control of Máel Sechnaill and the Southern Uí Néill.
The Battle of Tara is regarded as a far more decisive defeat for the Norse of Dublin than the later, and much more famous, Battle of Clontarf. Olaf Cuaran was the last of the great Norse kings in Ireland, and following him the status of the Kingdom of Dublin was never the same again.
The battle took place near the Hill of Tara in Ireland, which is an ancient ceremonial burial site and the location of the Lia Fáil (Stone of Destiny) which was a place of inauguration and the seat of power for the High Kings of Ireland. It is assumed by historians that the defence of this sacred site, which also appears in Irish mythology, against the foreign Norse Vikings would have been a rallying point for many local Irishmen.

The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitoria, also called Monastery of Batalha is arguably one of the most beautiful works of Portuguese and European architecture.
This exceptional architectural ensemble resulted from the fulfillment of a promise made by King João I in gratitude for the victory in Aljubarrota, a battle fought on August 14, 1385, which secured the throne and guaranteed the independence of Portugal.

Several papal families fought over Ninfa, which was at various times destroyed and rebuilt. As the result of papal wars and inter-family disputes, the town was substantially destroyed in 1382 leading to an exodus of the population and an unstoppable decay that lasted until the 20th century.
In the early 1920s, Caetani family set out to restore Ninfa, laying out the foundations for a garden today counted among the most beautiful in the world. (fonte: sito Oasi di Ninfa)
A mob of European Starlings, like the juvenile atop the feeder in the picture, claimed my backyard and the neighbor's yard. Starlings squeaked , fought with each other and chased every living thing from the yard. Eventually, "my hero", a single hungry Blue Jay, one of my favorite birds, cleared the yard of Starlings. They all went to my neighbor's yard hahaha.
The last battle has been fought. The winter had mobilized his last contingent and send us a stormy shower of sleet across the already blooming garden. But it was for nothing. Most of the crocusses are still standing steady and shining, after the fight they won, even brighter. The winner is known, the spring.

Prince died soon after a long fought civil war,
just after I'd wiped away his last tear
I guess he's better off than he was before,
A whole lot better off than the fools he left here
I used 2 cry 4 Prince because he was my only friend
Those kind of cars don't pass u every day
I used 2 cry 4 Prince because I wanted to see him again,
But sometimes sometimes life ain't always the way...
Sometimes it snows in April
Sometimes I feel so bad, so bad
Sometimes I wish life was never ending,
and all good things, they say, never last
Springtime was always my favorite time of year,
A time 4 lovers holding hands in the rain
Now springtime only reminds me of Prince's tears
Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain
He used 2 say so strong unafraid to die
Unafraid of the death that left me hypnotized
No, staring at his picture I realized
No one could cry the way my Prince cried
Sometimes it snows in April
Sometimes I feel so bad
Sometimes, sometimes I wish that life was never ending,
And all good things, they say, never last
I often dream of heaven and I know that Prince's there
I know that he has found another friend
Maybe he's found the answer 2 all the April snow
Maybe one day I'll see my Prince again
Sometimes it snows in April
Sometimes I feel so bad, so bad
Sometimes I wish that life was never ending,
But all good things, they say, never last
All good things they say, never last
And love, it isn't love until it's past

7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
I fought for you
The hardest, it made me the strongest
So tell me your secrets
I just can't stand to see you leaving
We laughed at the darkness
So scared that we lost it
We stood on the ceilings
You showed me love was all you needed
No heaven couldn't wait for you
So go on, go home

♫ Bella Ciao ♫
The song Bella Ciao is the song of the Italian resistance and partisans who fought against the fascist dictatorship of Mussolini and the occupation by Hitler's Nazi soldiers. It is the song of April 25th, the day Italy celebrates the liberation from Nazi fascism.
Who were the partisans?
The partisans were the Italian resistance against the fascist dictatorship and the Nazi occupation. Their help was crucial for the liberation of Italy by Anglo-American troops. The partisans were common people who armed themselves as best they could. They belonged to different political tendencies (communists, shareholders, monarchists, socialists, democrats, liberals, republicans, anarchists) gathered in the Committee for National Liberation (it. Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale). They hid mainly in the mountains and weakened the enemy with insurrections and sabotage, for example by damaging communication and transportation routes. Women also played an important role and were often the relay women, carrying information and messages.

Stamattina mi sono alzato,
Oh bella, ciao! Bella, ciao! Bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!
Stamattina mi sono alzato,
E ho trovato l’invasor.
Oh partigiano, portami via,
Oh bella, ciao! Bella, ciao! Bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!
Oh partigiano, portami via,
Ché mi sento di morir.
E se io muoio da partigiano,
Oh bella, ciao! Bella, ciao! Bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!
E se io muoio da partigiano, tu mi devi seppellir.
E seppellire lassù in montagna,
Oh bella, ciao! Bella, ciao! Bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!
E seppellire lassù in montagna,
Sotto l’ombra di un bel fior.
Tutte le genti che passeranno,
Oh bella, ciao! Bella, ciao! Bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!
Tutte le genti che passeranno,
Mi diranno «Che bel fior!»
«E questo è il fiore del partigiano»,
Oh bella, ciao! Bella, ciao! Bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!
«Questo è il fiore del partigiano,
Morto per la libertà!»
This morning I got up,
Oh beautiful, hello! Hello beautiful! Beautiful, bye, bye, bye!
This morning I got up,
And I found the invader.
Oh partisan, take me away,
Oh beautiful, hello! Hello beautiful! Beautiful, bye, bye, bye!
Oh partisan, take me away,
Because I feel like dying.
And if I die as a partisan,
Oh beautiful, hello! Hello beautiful! Beautiful, bye, bye, bye!
And if I die as a partisan, you have to bury me.
And bury up there in the mountains,
Oh beautiful, hello! Hello beautiful! Beautiful, bye, bye, bye!
And bury up there in the mountains,
Under the shade of a beautiful flower.
All the people who will pass,
Oh beautiful, hello! Hello beautiful! Beautiful, bye, bye, bye!
All the people who will pass,
They will say to me «What a beautiful flower!»
«And this is the flower of the partisan»,
Oh beautiful, hello! Hello beautiful! Beautiful, bye, bye, bye!
"This is the flower of the partisan,
Died for freedom!"
The Battle of Didgori was fought between the armies of the Kingdom of Georgia and the Great Seljuq Empire at the narrow place of Didgori, 40 km west of Tbilisi, on August 12, 1121. The large Muslim army, under the command of Ilghazi ibn Artuq was unable to maneuver, and suffered a devastating defeat due to King David IV of Georgia’s effective military tactics.
The battle at Didgori was the culmination of the entire Georgian-Seljuk wars, and led to the Georgians’ reconquest of Tbilisi in 1122. Soon after that David moved the capital from Kutaisi to Tbilisi. The victory at Didgori inaugurated the medieval Georgian Golden Age and is celebrated in the Georgian chronicles as a (Georgian: ძლევაჲ საკვირველი, dzlevay sakvirveli; lit. the "miraculous victory"). Modern Georgians continue to remember the event as an annual September festival known as Didgoroba (the day of Didgori).

A place where the forces of nature have fought their battles for thousands of years
Although it is a beautiful area of natural wonders, it is also a meeting place, or shall we say a battlefield, of natural forces. Over the centuries and even thousands of years, and day after day, the Atlantic Ocean attacks the land, the coastline, and little by little it breaks away and reshapes the beach, the cliffs, and the stacks. Everyone needs to remember that, although the waves may seem innocent, they are mighty, strong, and sometimes very dangerous. Caution is necessary, especially when the tide is high and the winds are strong. We must also remember that waves are not of equal size. Each 14-20th wave in the Atlantic Ocean is considerably bigger than the others and floods higher up the beach. The waves are very deceptive, and everyone should be careful and not take any risks. When you look west towards Dyrhólaey and then east towards the stacks of Reynisdrangar, you can see the cliffs made of solid rock and in the middle the barrier made of volcanic ash. The geological material that the ocean longs to demolish, but the volcanic island continues to add to and combat the power of the sea.

I had intended to follow the path along the upper slopes of Biggin Dale and then down into Wolfscote Dale, as the low cloud/fog appeared to have set in. As I climbed the slope into Biggin Dale the fog started to lift so I decided to retrace my steps back along the top to Beresford Dale. I'm glad I did as I was treated to some good light as the Sun fought to break through.

Males are black with red shoulder patch that is sometimes concealed. Males have rusty feather edges in the winter. Females are streaked brown and often confused with sparrows. Look for long, sharply pointed bill. Often in flocks, especially in winter. Visits feeders. Breeds in marshes and scrubby, wet fields. Distinctive song, especially as migrants arrive in early spring. Special are you in this world, you fought a battle to be born.
Seasons so many in a single day, but always a summer smile did I see,
Smiling away those silly blues , precious moments did pass by,
Saved to stand so many a season, just in a single day.
So gentle is your touch, so flowery your words,
Sense and my sensibilities pass through flames of sensuousness
Single frame of your lovely action, re-lives again and again from
Sweet fragrance of love you leave behind.
Special are you in this world, you are loved like never before,
Reasons not too many, you are the special one, born from a battle,
Withering away of mindless beauty, rarely makes my heart
Not to miss a beat for you.

Build between 1864 and 1866, the Italian Ironclad RN Palestro fought in the Battle of Lissa out of the Island today known as the Croatian Vis. The battle between Italy and Austro-Hungary was probably the last Battle at Sea which relied on the tactics of ramming. The Palestro sunk due to an explosion in the mid-to-aft area, probably an ammunition magazine.
The astonishing well preserved wreck found its resting place in a depth of 120m / 393ft in the Adriatic Sea, where she is a relict of a bygone time.

This beautiful scenic area above Jena was dedicated to the war since 1806. First Napoleon fought here against the Prussians, then it was a maneuver area for imperial troops, then the cavalry of the Wehrmacht and later the tanks of the Soviet army practiced here. After the fall of the wall it is now a nature reserve. It was wished that this would be a model for the wars of this world.

view of the western part (from the garden) of the Walewscy Palace in Walewice
Classicist building designed by Hilary Szpilowski or Stanislaw Zawadzki, built in 1773-1783 by Anastazy Walewski (chamberlain to King Stanislaw August Poniatowski); located on the Mroga River.
The palace is counted among the most interesting examples of classicist country seats in Poland, built at the end of the 18th century. The front faces east. It consists of a one-story rectangular main body and one-story side pavilions, also built on a rectangular plan, connected with the main body by communication galleries broken at right angles. The premise is based on the Palladian style, very popular in Poland in the second half of the 18th and first 19th centuries. From the front, the palace has a massive, four-column Ionic battered portico topped with a triangular pediment (tympanum) with the coat of arms of Pomian, the later owner Stanislaw Grabiński. From the garden there are two prominent extreme (side) risalits. Inside the palace, large representative halls with decorative brick fireplaces and elaborate furnishings were created, as well as spacious palace rooms. In one of the pavilions original painted wallpaper from the 19th century with mythological motifs has been preserved.
On May 4, 1810, the son of Napoleon Bonaparte and Maria Walewska, Alexander Colonna-Walewski, later French ambassador to Great Britain and foreign minister to Napoleon III, was born there. He also became heir to the estate, which he sold to Maria Walewska's brother, Teodor Łączyński, in 1831.
Much of the palace's charm is added by the perfect composition of the building with an extensive landscape park designed by Walerian Kronenberg. Original late Baroque and classicist sandstone sculptures depicting Mars, Venus, and Diana have been preserved there, as well as two hermits and an armed man in ancient costume.
In the mid-19th century, the palace and its estate passed into the hands of the Grabiński family of the Pomian coat of arms. The Grabinskis modernized and rebuilt the palace at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, established a stud farm for half-breed horses (Anglo-Arabians), developed the breeding of cockerel sheep (the only one in the country), a huge fish farm (on more than 100 hectares of ponds), a factory of potato flour and starch. The last owners of Walewice were papal chamberlain Stanislaw Bohdan Grabiński and his wife Jadwiga, née hr. Potocki, and after his death in 1930 their minor children Stanislaw Wojciech, Maria, Wladyslaw, Róża and Jan Grabiński. The palace still contains some of the furnishings and furniture from the last owners.
During World War II, on the night of September 9-10, 1939, the 17th Regiment of Wielkopolska Uhlans from Gniezno of the Wielkopolska Cavalry Brigade fought battles for the Palace and the village of Walewice during the Battle of the Bzura River.
Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, the ancient serpent, Lucifer, the shining bringer of the dawn, the morning star that leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

Memorial Hall was erected in honor of Harvard graduates who fought for the Union in the American Civil War. From 1865 to 1868, a fund-raising committee gathered $370,000, then equal to one-twelfth of Harvard's total endowment, which was augmented by an additional $40,000 bequest from Charles Sanders, class of 1802 and college steward 1827-1831, for "a hall or theatre to be used on Commencement days, Class days, Exhibition days, days of the meetings of the society of Alumni, or any other public occasion connected with the College, whether literary or festive."
An architectural competition began in December 1865, with the winning designs submitted by William Robert Ware, class of 1852, and Henry Van Brunt, class of 1854. (These initial designs were altered as plans proceeded.) In 1870 the building was named Memorial Hall and its cornerstone laid; Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., composed a hymn for the occasion. The hall was dedicated for use in 1874, with Sanders Theatre substantially complete in 1875, and the tower completed in 1877. The tower was subsequently destroyed in a 1956 fire but rebuilt in 1999.
Donnington Castle was built in the late 14th century by Sir Richard Abberbury, a soldier, courtier and diplomat who served the Black Prince and his son Richard II. More luxurious residence than fortress, it was one of several castles built around this time by nobles and gentry who had profited from England’s wars with France. Taken into royal control in 1503, Donnington remained a prestigious residence in the 16th century, notably being fought over by Elizabeth Russell, its keeper under Elizabeth I, and the Earl of Nottingham. It played a major role during the English Civil War, when it endured a 20-month siege. After the castle’s surrender, most of it was demolished, and only the magnificent gatehouse was left standing.
The cockshafer Loved and hated: this big beetle is the star in many fairy tales and stories but is nevertheless fought hard from time to time. Underground life When the fully developed may beetle crawls out of the earth in the spring and flies away, it has been on it for most of its life.
This beetle spent three to four years underground in the larva stage.
The adult insect lives only four to six weeks. May beetle year This life cycle follows one with many beetles, the so-called beetle year, on three 'beetle-poor' years. Unfortunately, the little beetle is no longer as well represented here as in grandmother's times, when huge swarms occupied our fields, forests and meadows. The small difference In our regions there are 3 species of may beetles: the common may beetle, the sand chick beetle and the rare Melolontha pectoralis. You can tell the insects apart by their differently shaped and colored abdomens. Males and females can also be distinguished in this way.
Antenna Another way to distinguish may beetle males and females are the antennae. Those of the males are considerably larger and have 7 'leaves' per antenna, those of the females have 7. The antennae are equipped with smell sensors and thus form the nose of the beetle, as it were.
The male cockchafer seeks out the females. For this he uses the lamellae (leaves) on his antennae as an organ of smell. The smallest concentrations of odor can be detected with these slats. The females secrete pheromones (odorous substances), which are smelled by the males. When a male has found a female, they mate. During mating, the ends of the abdomen are connected. The male drops onto his back and is then dragged along by the female for a while. Beetles do not sit on top of each other unlike other insects. After mating, the female flies to the open field. There she burrows a few centimeters deep into the ground. She deposits about 20 eggs in the soil with the tip of her abdomen. The eggs are small (diam. 2-3 mm), oval-shaped and off-white in colour.
The cockchafer is a medium-sized beetle 2-3 cm, with reddish brown elytra and legs. He has a black body with a striking triangle pattern on both sides. The cockchafer has red-brown feelers. The thickening on the end of the feelers can fan out into lamellae (blades). The May beetle therefore belongs to the family of the leaf blade beetles. Engerling is a name for the larva of the May beetle. These are known because they feed on plant roots, especially grasses.

"Sol Duc Falls is by most accounts one of the most photogenic waterfalls in Washington State and by proxy is one of the most sought out waterfalls by photographers - and chances are it ranks favorably nationwide in similar comparisons. Set within the thick temperate rain forest of the Olympic Mountains, the Sol Duc River creates one of the more uniquely shaped waterfalls in the northwest where it splits into as many as four channels - depending on the volume of the river - hurtling 37 feet off the side of a cliff into a narrow canyon, followed by an 11 foot flume-style drop as the river exits the canyon into a broader gorge below. The National Park Service has done an excellent job at constructing rustic viewpoints that provide many varied angles of perspective.
Prior to 1991 the accepted spelling of all features bearing this name was Soleduck (sometimes spelled Solduck as well). The Washington State Board of Geographic Names approved the change to Sol Duc because of its more accurate translation from the Quillayute word, meaning "magic waters", from which it derives. A legend tells of two dragons, Sol Duc and Elwha, who fought to a draw and were sealed in deep caverns. They wept hot tears at their confinement which furnishes the water for Olympic and Sol Duc Hot Springs."
